Of course, Adria didn’t win. After a lot of back and forth, Adria found herself sitting beside Lily, who was squealing happily.
Adria nearly rolled her eyes.
The AC was on, but she still felt the atmosphere was hot.
Directly in front of her was Chloe, who was the passenger princess and who had glared at her several times through the mirror.
She couldn’t decide if Nathan saw everything or if he was really completely oblivious to it.
He looked at her through the mirror too occasionally, and their eyes had locked for a long second.
Adria wondered why she was there, why she had to tag along, while the cause of her discomfort was giggling happily.
Adria sighed again for what felt like the 100th time.
“Are you sure you’re holding up okay back there?” Nathan’s deep voice came in.
Adria’s eyes widened—he definitely was speaking to her, wasn’t he?
She looked at Lily, but the girl seemed like she didn’t hear anyone speaking.
“You nut,” he confirmed.
Her face turned into a full scowl.
“How’s that your business?” she said as she gave him a disdainful look before turning her gaze away.
She didn’t see it, but she could swear she heard him chuckle.
Isn’t his behavior what is referred to as seducing?
She shook her head mentally and decided to focus on the beautiful sight outside.
“We’re here,” Chloe said happily, bringing Adria back to life.
Lily tugged at Adria’s dress. “Let’s go,” she said happily.
Adria gave her a smile before opening her door. From the side of her eye, she caught a glimpse of Nathan unbuckling Chloe’s seatbelt.
She didn’t look; she just picked her phone from her side bag as she waited for Lily to come out before closing the door.
They all walked into the mall, and Lily nearly jumped out of excitement.
“Woah, calm down, little tiger,” Adria said, laughing.
That earned her a look from Chloe.
Adria again wondered why this lady wanted to eat her alive.
Could she really be jealous?
But they are literally siblings—she and Nathan—what could they possibly do?
“Where’s the roll for color paint? Let’s get it before looking for mine,” Chloe said out of nowhere.
Adria was pleasantly surprised—at least Chloe wasn’t a complete b***h.
But Lily shook her head. “You two go on, Adria and I will look for it.”
She didn’t even wait for their response; she began to pull Adria towards the other side.
But Adria didn’t miss the annoyed glare on Chloe’s face and the unsatisfied look on Nathan’s face.
She almost laughed.
Lily, without knowing, kept on cooking everyone.
“You know, I don’t really like her,” Lily said after a while. “I thought I did, but after a while I realized I didn’t.”
Adria wasn’t expecting that, so she was a bit confused.
“Who are we talking about? You don’t mean Chloe, do you?” she asked.
“Her. Chloe.”
Adria frowned. “Why is that? Did she do anything to you?”
She was now worried.
“No, not really. But she isn’t nice to anyone that comes into their space—her and Nathan. That annoys me,” she said as she wiggled her ponytail.
Adria couldn’t help but chuckle.
“Feels like someone is protective of her older brother.”
“That goat? No. I care less whatever happens to him. But I didn’t like the way she kept glaring at you throughout today. You’re my sister, I have to take a side, so I took yours,” she said in a tone that said she was satisfied by her decision.
Adria frowned a little. “So it’s today you decided you didn’t like her? For me?”
Lily nodded.
Adria felt touched by that.
Her heart warmed up.
She gave her a hug before pulling away.
“I wouldn’t be a good older sister if I said I approve. You know, I kind of understand her—it only shows how much she loves your brother. So how about you give her a second chance before writing her off?” Adria said with a smile.
Lily thought about it. “But I gave her one.”
Adria nearly laughed out loud. “Then a third one. A fourth one would be nice too,” she said.
Lily nodded hesitantly. “Okay.”
Adria clapped her hands and stood up straight. “Now, how about we go watercolor hunting?”
Lily nodded.
After what felt like an hour, the two groups met outside the mall.
“Thank you so much, babe,” Chloe said as she locked her arms around Nathan, who was already holding multiple bags of only God knows what.
He didn’t say anything.
He went over to the car and placed everything in the trunk of the car.
“Brother,” Lily said with a wide grin.
He answered with a warning stare.
It was obvious that whatever she wanted to say, he knew what it was.
“Come on, please,” she gave him doe eyes.
“I have things to do, Lily. Besides, you’re too old for this.”
“For wanting ice cream?” she said with hurt.
Adria’s face lit up. “Ice cream?!” she almost screamed.
Nathan was surprised at her reaction and swallowed, then turned to Lily and replied, “Too old to be acting like a baby.”
Lily folded her arms. “How’s saying I want ice cream being regarded as a baby act? Moreover, Adria wants it too.”
Nathan sighed. “I should have known it wasn’t color paint you wanted. This isn’t a ritual. We won’t be going to the ice cream shop every time we visit the mall,” he warned.
“Why? It’s just a walk away.”
Adria didn’t want to say anything to Nathan, but she really wanted to beg him to agree.
She wanted ice cream too.
She loved ice cream.
She didn’t realize her eyes were now looking at him, begging.
“You want ice cream?” he asked, his eyes fixed on hers.
“Uhmm,” she coughed.
She could hear Lily begging her to say yes.
“It’s alright if you don’t. We’d only go if more than one person wants it,” he said with a shrug, acting as if he wanted to retire to his car.
She didn’t miss the bored look on Chloe’s face.
But she was annoyed that he wanted her to beg.
“Yes.”
Yes! Yes!! Yes!!! She would love to have ice cream. She wanted to say.
But she settled for just "yes."
His hooded gaze looked almost taunting, and she could swear if they were alone, he would have said more.
“Ice cream then,” he finally said.
Lily jumped, then grabbed Adria’s hand and pulled her towards the shop.
There were several huts with a table each for maybe a family or groups that came for ice cream.
Lily pulled her towards one. “This is my favorite spot. It’s away from the others.”
Nathan and Chloe reached them, and immediately Chloe sat down, seeming exhausted.
She didn’t want to be there, and she made it freaking obvious.
Adria wondered if she was angry because they were eating away their s*x time.
Immediately she had that thought, she mentally slapped herself. That was wrong.
“I want banana and marshmallow flavor,” Lily said immediately to Nathan. He rolled his eyes.
“Just vanilla,” Chloe said in a bored tone with her chin on her palm as she looked at nowhere specifically.
Nathan’s eyes were fixed on Adria, waiting for her to make an order.
He wanted to know what she wanted, what she liked.
In fact, the moment she had screamed ice cream, she didn’t have to say more—he had immediately made the decision to take them.
“Let’s go. You won’t be able to carry all of them,” she said as she stood up from the bench.
Chloe immediately seemed alert, but there was nothing she could do.
Nathan nodded slowly.
They reached the owner's counter, and Nathan began to place their orders.
“And one Biscoff cone,” she added when he finished, and he chuckled.
“What?” she asked.
“You’ve got good taste,” he said teasingly.
She searched his face for any sarcasm.
“I would agree. What about you? You didn’t order for one—why?” she asked.
“Worried for me?” he replied, and she rolled her eyes.
“I would be for anyone who acts like they don’t like ice cream. But I guess that’s why you and Chloe fit so well,” she said as she looked away.
A little smile crept up on his face. “Careful, someone would think you’re jealous.”
She gave him an irritated look. “Of what, stepbrother?”
He raised his hands in defeat. “Nothing. Nothing at all.”
“Good,” she leaned in against the counter as she looked around.
“What would you suggest I try?” he said suddenly, completely catching her unawares.
“You mean ice cream?” she asked in wonder.
He nodded.
She eyed him suspiciously. “Are you sure?”
He laughed. “Yes.”
It was the most genuine, non-smirky laugh he had ever laughed towards her.
“Uhmm. Then I think… maybe you should… Uhmm...”
He was laughing completely hard now. “Hey hey. Take your time,” he said to her, and for a moment, she wondered where the rude, overbearing Nathan had gone to.
She liked this one just okay.
She let out a sigh and finally said, “Maybe try what I’m getting. I love it—or malted caramel,” she said.
He watched her eyes as they flickered brightly.
“I’ll try what you’re getting then. What’s that again?” he asked her.
“Biscoff.”
Their eyes locked in for a second, but she looked away.
