Adria dressed up, though she was confused as hell. She was more in a hurry to see the ‘girlfriend’ than to address her current confusion.
She dried her hair and pulled on a black sundress she had received as a gift from her best friend two years ago.
She loved it so much that she over-wore it; now, she could only wear it at home.
She heard a voice giggling downstairs the moment she opened her door.
Slowly, she walked toward the stairs, hoping to catch a glimpse of this unfortunate girl.
As she got closer, the girl's voice became louder, her tiny voice ringing throughout the house.
Adria didn’t want to be seen, so she stood in a corner and peeped. She caught a glimpse of the girl's hair; she was facing away from her.
The girl was blonde. She had short blonde hair and a sharp voice.
But she couldn’t see more unless she went downstairs, and she couldn’t risk Nathan picking on her, especially in the presence of a stranger who was his girlfriend.
Just as she made the decision to return to her room and maybe read, she heard someone walking right behind her.
She couldn’t hide; she wasn’t fast enough.
“Hi, Adria. Good morning,” Claire said with a bright and warm tone, as always.
Adria turned slowly, faking the best smile she could muster. She had been caught.
“Hi, Claire,” she said back, her smile wide.
“Why are you standing there? Come along with me; let me introduce you to Chloe. I think you’ll get along.”
Oh, Chloe. That’s her name, then.
“I think I’ll pass. I just remembered I have something to do,” Adria said as she tried to walk past Claire.
“Come on, 10 minutes won’t hurt,” Claire pleaded.
Adria understood that Claire just wanted everyone to get along.
She meant well, but Adria really preferred it this way.
She didn’t want to be forced to bond with people she didn’t want to bond with.
Adria shook her head. “I don’t think that’s a good idea.”
How could she tell this woman that she just wanted to eavesdrop, and that was that?
“Five minutes,” Claire’s pleading eyes didn’t move Adria, but she also didn’t look like she was about to budge, so Adria figured she might as well agree.
“Five minutes.”
Claire linked her arm with Adria’s as they marched downstairs.
“See who I have here!” Claire announced as they reached the last stair.
Chloe, who had been talking, suddenly turned to look at Adria.
Their eyes locked.
Chloe was very beautiful; her eyes were a bright blue, and her face was thin but round. Her brows were full and perfectly shaped.
Her lips were plump and perfect, making her look like a doll.
Adria swallowed hard as all eyes turned to look at her. Even Lily, who was sitting between Nathan and Chloe, stopped playing with her iPad to look at her.
Adria found herself biting her lip in contempt; she wished she had just stayed inside.
She shifted her gaze to Nathan, who already had his eyes on her. He wore a smirk.
He looked so comfortable, his legs wide apart, his arm resting on the back of the couch.
His smile grew wider the longer he looked at her expression.
“Nice to meet you. You’re Nathan’s stepsister, right?” Chloe suddenly said with a pleasant smile.
Adria dragged her scowling gaze away from Nathan and looked at the girl, literally dressed like a doll, in front of her.
“Nice to meet you, too,” Adria replied flatly. She didn’t pretend to like her new family, so she wasn’t about to pretend to like this one.
What was more annoying? She knew she’d be seeing more of her now.
“You’re pretty,” the girl said before looking back at Nathan. She said nothing but seemed to communicate silently with him.
Chloe definitely didn’t like Adria, and it was damn obvious.
Adria knew a fake when she saw one.
Adria took the hint and wanted to run back to her room.
From the corner of her eye, she felt Nathan’s gaze still fixed on her, while his girlfriend whispered unfathomable things to him.
“I’ll just go back in,” she said, turning immediately to run.
“Hey, stepsister, wait! I have something to show you,” Lily said excitedly, immediately standing and running toward Adria, grabbing her finger with her tiny one.
Adria closed her eyes and sighed before taking a deep breath.
“What’s that?” she asked, looking down at Lily, who seemed like she’d soon be taller than her.
“I want to teach you how to play this game so you’ll play with me,” Lily said, pulling Adria to the other couch opposite Nathan and his girlfriend.
It seemed Lily had figured out that Adria actually liked her, and she was using it to her advantage.
“Uh, Lily, I can’t. Maybe later,” Adria tried to say, but Lily had already pushed her onto the couch.
“Come on! I’m sure you’ll say that tomorrow when I meet you again,” Lily said.
Wow, the girl was all wised up.
She didn’t mind playing with Lily, but not when her brother was watching her like a hawk.
Was he even paying attention to what his girlfriend was saying to him?
“Come on, stepsister, the girl just wants to play with you,” Nathan’s deep sarcastic voice rang out from where he was.
Adria’s green eyes turned towards him, and the anger and disgust in them were unsettling.
“Shut up and leave me alone,” she snapped.
That only made him giggle more. It was like anything she said to him only fueled him to do more damage.
“Sorry, but why so feisty?”
Adria wanted to reply with something rude, but she noticed Chloe was looking at her like she wanted to beat the hell out of her.
So, she rolled her eyes at him and kept quiet.
Lily taught her how to play the game, and the goal was to win. If not, Lily wouldn’t be convinced that she had learned.
Of course, she didn’t win even once.
Maybe she could have—only if her stepbrother wasn’t staring at her like prey.
She couldn’t concentrate!
Adria was surprised when, after she failed again, Nathan suddenly stood up from where he was, untangled his arms from Chloe—who had been all over him—and walked up to Adria.
“I don’t want to do this, but watching you fail over and over again is excruciating,” he said as he threw himself between Adria and Lily.
“What are you doing? No one asked you to watch us.”
“Here, let me show you,” he said, totally ignoring her comment.
“Look, you keep holding this, then keep shooting. Bend using this…”
He went over it again a few times and handed Adria the game.
“That should do. You should be able to win her now,” he said to her with a smirk.
Adria didn’t want to say thank you, so she just took the phone from him and looked away.
Something about his closeness made her feel very uncomfortable and uneasy.
His scent was… actually nice, and she hated to like anything about him or what he did.
Nathan, out of nowhere, bent down to her ear and whispered, “That’s if you manage to tear your eyes off me.” His tone was full of narcissism and arrogance.
She huffed in annoyance and gave him a disdainful look. Here she was, thinking they were finally getting along.
“You’re so full of yourself,” she glared at him irritably.
“I agree, but that doesn’t mean I’m wrong,” he went on. He clearly had an agenda.
And she wasn’t here for it.
“Come on, you guys, not again,” Lily intervened.
“Yes, Lily. Not again,” he said with a mischievous grin.
Adria could scream right now out of frustration.
A sudden cough made them both look up.
Chloe seemed mad. Like, crazy mad. But she hid it with a dangerous smile.
Adria gulped.
“Let’s go, babe. Remember, you were supposed to take me to the mall?” Chloe’s smile was scary and fake.
She wasn’t blinking at all.
Nathan’s blue eyes were hooded with confusion for a minute, then he seemed to understand what was going on.
“Yes, I was supposed to,” he gave Adria, who looked like she was about to run, a quick crooked smile before standing up.
“But you promised to buy me color paint too,” Lily said from the side, and Adria was happy.
If they went together, she’d finally be free.
“Come on, let’s go, Lily,” Chloe said with an almost genuine smile. She stood up and held out her hand toward Lily.
But Lily totally ignored it. “Can we go together, Adria?”
