Chapter 1: Monsters
Freya’s pov
I looked at the town, and it seemed so quiet and peaceful. Kids were playing around in the streets, having the time of their lives. Humans are oblivious; strangers see a peaceful town.
But at night, monsters roam around this place.
Creatures of the night that would give you nightmares for all your life.
Things we have only believed are nothing but myths and stories.
From this hill, I could see the entire town.
This was supposed to be a so-called paradise.
A town where supernaturals and humans can co-exist.
And those monsters use them to try and look like they are good people.
That is exactly what supernatural beings are, but out of all of them, werewolves are the worst.
Werewolves are nothing but predators; they go after the weak just for fun.
In this town, 8 years ago, my mother was killed by a werewolf.
I saw everything through the bedroom window, and I couldn’t do anything. I was only 10 years old. What could I have done to help her?
It was my first time seeing a man turn into a monster.
It felt like I was having some kind of terrible nightmare I couldn’t wake up from.
Back then, I had no idea about the world we live in. I just thought that everyone was human just like me. But for the past 8 years, I have seen the darkness that fills this world.
I walked down the small hill and walked towards our new home.
My father and I came here to finish what my mother started.
You see, my mother comes from a long line of hunters.
We don’t hunt deer or rabbits or anything like that. We hunt real monsters, monsters that walk around acting like they are one of us.
Unless it hasn’t been clear enough, I hate supernatural beings with every bone in my body.
To them, we are nothing but insects that don’t matter. Our lives compared to theirs are meaningless and insignificant to them.
I found my father on the phone, and he looked at me with a frown.
“What is wrong?” I asked him, and he then sighed.
“Apparently, one of the Alpha Princes has been exiled by their father.” Dad said, and I frowned.
“How does that concern us? Isn’t it their family matter?” I asked him and he nodded.
Anyway, the royal family lives far away from here. What is going on with their family can’t affect us in any way.
“Yes, it is their family, and he also happens to be related to the Alpha of this pack. And he is on his way here.” Dad explained, and I frowned at this.
An Alpha Prince coming here, will that ruin my plans?
No, I don’t think that he will play any role in this.
I heard that the Alpha Princes are both stupid and self-absorbed. I don’t think that someone like me will draw his attention. His coming here changes nothing for me, but he is just some dumb 18-year-old. I bet he got exiled because of something stupid like girls and parties.
I don’t think that he is going to be a problem for me in any way.
Not only that, but I know for a fact that the royal family hates humans.
And my grudge isn’t with him, when my Mom was killed, he was also 10 years old. To him, I will probably be just another human girl he can’t stand.
Plus, no one is going to suspect me at all.
You see, if a hunter is to stay in an Alpha’s territory, then the Alpha should be told.
For the longest time, supernatural beings and hunters worked together. This has always been the norm, and it is exactly what my mother did back then. She informed the Alpha, and he and his family were the only people who knew that a hunter was here.
She was here looking for something, and to her it wasn’t a big deal. That was why she even bought me along with her.
But she found something, I don’t know what, but I know what, but I will use this time to find out.
But if she was killed for it, then I know that it is something big. This is why I am sure that I can’t trust them.
One of them is her killer, and I need to find out who and why.
So I will just have to work in secret to find my mother’s murderer.
“We should go and see Mr Nolan James.” Dad said, and I nodded.
We got into the car and drove to the huge mansion.
I wonder what kind of person this Alpha Nolan guy is. Is he the good guy everyone says he is?
Some people see him as a hero because he is one of the few Alphas who don’t mind having humans in their pack.
Some werewolves prefer to stay as far away from humans as possible.
I also prefer that as well, because it means they will kill each other and not innocent people. As a human who is aware that werewolves exist, I don’t see how we can co-exist. So naturally, I am suspicious of werewolves who believe we can do so.
This Alpha is using all these humans to hide something?
“Are you sure you are ready?” Dad asked me, and I nodded. He looked at me, his facial expression serious as his brown eyes were filled with worry. “We made a promise, I want you to remember that.”
“I will join the hunters organization only to find my mother’s killer. After that, I will quit and live a normal life.” I said, and he nodded.
“Good, your mother wanted out of this. This world, it isn’t good for anyone. It’s better to remain oblivious than to meddle with it” He said and then sighed.
“You are not changing your mind, are you, Dad? I am 18 years old now. I can go my own way and do this by myself.” I pointed out.
“No, there is no way I am letting you do this on your own. I will help you.” He said and started driving.
My father never approved of me being a hunter like my mother. He wanted me to live a normal life, but how could I?
After what happened, I didn’t know what normal was anymore.
Actually, even now, I don’t know what normal is anymore.
We stopped at the so-called Alpha’s house, and I felt this anger start to fill me up.
Inside there, in that huge mansion there is a person who killed my mother.
“Calm yourself down. You are supposed to be like a serpent, hide all that anger and hatred deep down. Otherwise, this mission of yours will end before it begins.” Dad said.
I looked at him, and I could tell that he was also angry, but man, he is good at hiding it.
He is right, I should be a serpent.
You see, snakes are very good at hiding their true intentions, and that is what I must do.
I put on my best smile as we walked into the large mansion, escorted by ‘security’.
“Welcome, Mr Jones, I am Nolan, and this is my wife, Paris.” The old man with green eyes and blond hair said. He had the most gentle smile that, if I didn’t know his true nature, I would have been fooled.
“Thank you so much for inviting us to dinner.” Dad mirrors the other man’s smile.
“My name is Paris, and I am his wife. My husband is the mayor of this town, so we like to be connected with everyone.” His wife said.
A beautiful woman with flawless skin and beautiful red hair.
It's scary how they don’t look like the monsters that they are.
“This must be your beautiful daughter. You will meet my kids very soon. I am sure they will like you.” She said looking at me with a beautiful smile. I smiled back at her and nodded at this.
“Thank you so much, I hope your kids and I can be the best of friends.” I answered, and she chuckled.
“You are so beautiful,” she complimented me. I was about to say something when someone came in running.
“He is here!” A man said, looking all nervous.
For some reason, the room went silent, and I watched as Nolan James and his wife exchanged worried glances.
A boy walked in with brown hair and green eyes.
“This is my nephew,” Mr. Nolan James said, gesturing toward the boy.
He didn’t spare his uncle even the slightest glance, his brown hair falling into his green eyes as if he didn’t want to be here.
Well, I guess he didn’t want to be here because he was exiled after all.
His hands were shoved deep into his pockets, his posture lazy, almost as if he was bored. But that didn’t make him look less intimidating because the moment he stepped into the room, everything shifted.
The air grew heavy. You could tell that someone with extreme power had walked into the room.
Everyone was silent, careful not to make a move.
Hell, I am human, and even I find his aura intimidating.
So imagine the wolves, no wonder a lot of them are practically shaking like leaves.
His gaze landed on me, sharp and unrelenting, like he was trying to look into my soul, searching for something I didn’t want him to see.
For a second, I couldn’t breathe.
Then he frowned, scoffing softly, as if he didn’t like what he saw.
My blood boiled, though I forced myself to stay still, to keep smiling like a serpent.
“Please sit down and join us for dinner.” Mrs James said.
He looked at my father and then back at him.
“No,” he said.
I found myself almost jumping with joy, I don’t know why but I think he is too dangerous.
Something tells me to run in the opposite direction.
What is it?
What is wrong with me? Since when do I run?
