He led them out of the building and through the courtyard to the novices’ quarters, which, by coincidence, were adjacent in what had been the original southwest corner of the monastery. Jade and Megan hadn’t been in this building before, and found it a most confusing place. It was a warren, a rambling maze of hallways and small rooms laid out in no discernible pattern, fit only for those who were on the bottom rungs of the order’s social ladder. The two women were quickly lost with all the twists and turns, but fortunately their guide knew exactly which way to go.
