Chapter 11: Imperial Court
Two very blurry faces were staring down at her as Jade tried opening her eyes. One was easy to guess from the white halo surrounding it, but the other was a Restaal face. Without clearer definition, it was impossible to identify. It was daytime; that much she could tell from the ambient light. She’d been unconscious for at least several hours; she hoped it wasn’t for several days.
She tried sitting up, and a fire lanced through the left side of her buttocks. Gasping, she fell back onto her bed, on her right side. She squinted her eyes shut against the pain and lay still, moaning softly.
“We’ll make a fine-looking pair when we appear at the court,” Megan said. “The Restaals will think all Terran women are accident prone.”
