CHAPTER NINE Tawan had tried his best to distract me from the anxiety knotting around my chest at the suspense of not knowing what my parents were up. My hands itched to just grab my phone, unblock them and hear what they had to say. Were they mad at me? Were they perhaps considering cutting my allowances off? What if they were kicking me off the will? The last thought made the blood in my body freeze. No, I couldn’t just be cut off from the will. They had basically groomed me for this my entire life. You know, get good grades, stay out of trouble, marry the right girl, get an MBA and make the right connections. In senior year, I had to take Debby Weston to Prom and make sure she had a great time because her father ran the most subscribed to Business magazine along with a sports & News channel. Not to mention, I had done a lot of ass kissing, sitting through boring dinners while pretending to be so enthusiastic about them. Without the company, my life will literally be meaningless. I wouldn’t even know where to start. The highlight of my day had been the unexpected video call from Darleen. Her eyes looked puffy, an indication that she had been crying. For almost a full minute, she just stared at me, not saying a word. f**k! What had I done? She had given me this one chance to have the wildest bachelor party ever and instead I’d blown it. I’d never f****d up in my life; at least not this bad. “Listen, I know you probably hate me now and its very understandable why you’d feel that way but if you gave me a chance to explain, you will realize that this is all a big misunderstanding. I love you Darleen and whatever happened here in Bangkok was because-“ “Because of what? You really expect me to believe whatever lie you have to spin? I had to stand before the press and lie, saying we had called it off between us already and were going to inform our parents before the wedding. They drilled me with questions, not you. Nothing you say can erase what I had to go through. This pain in my chest right now, is completely irreversible and did that fool you too?” Suddenly she broke into a smile. “This is why I’ve been trying to-wait, what?” I questioned, now completely confused. “Oh come on, let’s be honest. None of us really wanted to get married. I mean, playing the gay card is worth an applause. I wouldn’t have come up with that even with my Harvard brain,” She shrugged, grabbing a bow full of flamin hot Cheetos and chewing on one. They had been her favorite snack ever since she was about nine years old and I doubt it was a habit she would be dropping any time soon. “What the f**k are you talking about?” I was sinking deeper into the ocean of confusion. “Well, it was pretty obvious from the beginning that we were only doing this because our parents wanted us to. From the dating, public appearances, engagement and even this wedding. It was all for them. We were better off as friends from the very beginning but our parents thought it would look good on them if we got married,” she then laughed, “You know what is even crazier? I was hoping you’d slip up during this bachelor party, probably cheat on me or something so I could have a reason to call it off but it turns out, you and me were on the same page all along on the marriage. I have to hand it you though for the great performance. So who was that guy? He was pretty hot,” she went to devour her Cheetos like she hadn’t just dropped a bomb on me. “Wait, you are not mad…or heartbroken?” I questioned, trying to understand whatever was going on. “Duh! I just had to fake it for the Camera and both our parents,” she paused, “If I were you, I would however stay in Bangkok a bit longer until all this has calmed down. My parents are breathing a firestorm and yours well, the media hasn’t caught a glimpse of them but I can just imagine. So lay low, have all the fun in Bangkok. Who knows? Maybe you’d actually get to fall in love with someone and this time it won’t be to please your parents. It would be for you,” She shrugged. “I…I have to go,” I slammed the laptop shut as I stared into nothingness. Just then, Dean walked in holding a bottle of water and was probably going to stay something corny but then stopped. “What is wrong, buddy?” “I think I just had my first …heartbreak,” I whispered, the word itself sounding strange on my lips.
