Lara's P.O.V
Was my mother here? Was she planning some big surprise for me at home? My spirits lifted knowing he was here, having my mother here after being away from her felt good. I missed her. I have the best relationship with my mother. She never judged, even when she thought I was doing the wrong thing.
And what I loved the most about her when I needed her. She was always there. She'd never tell me I knew you were making a mistake, or I knew it would never work out for you, she would cook me my favorite dinner, wait for me to open up about what happened and just be the supportive person she has always been.
I said goodbye to Suann and left feeling renewed. She would have my back, give me the advice I needed and just make everything better... as I made my way home I pictured my apartment filled with balloons, cake and snacks... as she yelled surprise as soon as I opened the door to my apartment.
I unlocked my apartment door and there was complete silence... still sporting the biggest smile on my face, I took off my heels and dropped my handbag on the couch, yet no one yelled surprise. Could she be bathing Riley, and she didn't hear me enter? I made my way to my room, poked my head in the open door... empty.
Then I walked to Riley's room... empty... I pushed open the bathroom door to also find it empty... with no more rooms to look into, I went back to the lounge and got my cell from my handbag. Maybe they were going to grab something to eat? So I dialed my mother's number.
Lara: Hey mom, do you think you could grab me some cookies and cream ice cream please?
Mom: Hey honey, are you home?
Lara: Yeah, I just got home. I've had such a shitty day. I cannot wait to tell you all about it when you get here.
Mom: Oh no, I thought I would surprise you. I've been planning to come and see you and that grand baby of mine. How told you I was coming?
Lara: Suann kind of let it slip.
Mom: I'll be home soon baby.
I ended the call, went back to my bedroom and got a change of clothes, then went to soak myself in a hot bath. I couldn't wait to see mom... 15 minutes later my cell phone rang.
Mom: I thought you said you were home.
Lara: I am, I'm in the bath.
I could hear her heels clicking on the tiles over the phone as she walked.
Mom: Lara, where are you?
Lara: In the bath
Mom: I am standing at the door to the bathroom, and it's empty.
I turned my head to the door. I usually leave it open just in case Riley needs something, but she isn't there.
Lara: Suann said you came to get Riley at her place...
My insides dropped, she wasn't here...
Mom: Baby, I will only be arriving in two days' time, is everything okay?
Lara: I'll call you back, okay.
I said and hung up, I jumped out of the bath, threw on my clothes even though my baby was still soaking wet, rushed to get my bag and left my apartment... I called Suann asking her who it was that had come to get Riley, and again she told me his Grandmother... this couldn't be happening...
If Tanner was back, then that meant that so was his mother. Panic set in. I had no number of Tanner anymore. I didn't know where he lived. I knew nothing about him, so I headed to the police department. They could help, right? Just as I was about to get out of my car at the police department, my phone rang.
Unknown woman: get back in your car and meet me at Omez diner, and don't even think of letting the police know. If you do as I say, your son will be safe. If not, you'll never find him.
Then she hung up.
Yes, I taught Riley about the stranger thing, but I guess if it was Tanner's mother that was behind this, she probably told Riley she knew who his father was or that she was going to take Riley to his father. That is the only reason I could think of for him to leave with her.
My mind raced a mile a minute. I didn't doubt that it was Tanner's mother, but I couldn't be sure if it was her. I knew she was more than capable of hurting my boy. She didn't want him to live to being with, so what was to say she just became a loving grandmother overnight? I got back into my car and floored the car all the way to the diner.
I rushed inside, happy that it was a local diner and not some fancy restaurant, or they wouldn't let me in wearing sweatpants and a sweat shirt. I looked around the diner and spotted a mop of curly blond hair, then made my way to the table.
"What the f**k do you think you're doing with my son?"
I asked. As soon as I reached the table, I couldn't contain my anger.
"Sit down, Lara. We have a lot to talk about."
Tanner's mother said.
"Do not tell me to sit down! You have no right to my boy."
I whisper yelled.
"I'm not here for the child. I needed him to get you here."
She said in a calming, unnerving tone.
"What do you want from me?"
Riley, on the other hand, seemed to be enjoying his Sunday ice cream too much to even pay attention to the fact that I was even there.
"Sit down, let's talk."
"No, I stayed away. I didn't come looking for Tanner. I didn't even use the f*****g money you gave me. Everything my son has come from my hard work and sweat. I sat up with him at night while your son had no f*****g idea Riley even existed, so I don't owe you a damn thing."
"Come on baby, we are going home. I said to Riley. He looked up at me and if this way any other situation I would have laughed. His face was covered in ice cream. He looked disappointed that he had to leave his half-eaten ice cream but got up anyway.
"You're right, you don't. I didn't think you would do this without worming your way back into my son's life or taking him to court for money, but you see... if my son finds out what I did he won't be happy, and I cannot have that."
"He will find out whether I tell him or not."
I said, pulling Riley closer to me.
"Not if I have anything to do with it. I called your friend Suann and asked her to come and pick your boy up. You and I are going to have a chat.
"I am not going anywhere with you."
"Oh, but you are, if you love your boy, or I could report you to social services and your boy will end up in the system. You do know I have enough power not to make do on a promise, right?"
She is powerful all right. I knew she could do what she was saying, was it worth it for me to call her bluff? No, she was f*****g loaded... I earned a good salary but not nearly as much as she had if this turned out shitty... I bent down so that I was eye to eye with Riley and took his face in my hands.
"How would you like to spend the night at Aunty Suann's place? Mommy has to head in to do a late shift."
