Mia’s POV
I ran to the door, my heart pounding so loud it felt like it might burst out of my chest. Please let it be Cole. I got home yesterday, but he called to say he had something to do. I’d been waiting for him all day, hoping he’d show up the minute I stepped inside.
I don’t know why I got so mad. Maybe it was because I had built up this hope, this need for something more from him.
My hands hit the door and I pushed it open with a big smile, ready to see him.
“You’re—” The words caught in my throat. My smile vanished as soon as I saw who it really was.
“Alex…” My voice sounded tiny.
“Why?” He looked me over, noticing the light gone from my face. “Why do you look so dull? Expecting someone else? You looked happier before.” He walked inside, dragging his luggage behind
