Chapter 5

1589 Words
My heart pounded as I watched Aya struggle against the snarling wolf, fear twisting in my gut at how defenseless she looked. I couldn’t just stand by. I may not like her, but she was still my sister. In an instant, I shifted into my wolf form, muscles tensing as I charged forward with a fierce growl. I collided with the beast, snapping and clawing as we tumbled across the ground in a whirl of teeth and fury. The fight was brutal, each of us searching for any opening. Just when I thought I had the upper hand, the wolf snarled, pulled back, and vanished into the shadows. I sucked in a sharp breath. Clenching my fists, I then turned to Aya, who lay nearly lifeless on the ground. "Marsai… help me, please. Don’t let me die," she whispered, her voice so faint it sent a chill through me. My heart twisted as I took in the damage—the bruises scattered across her arms, the raw, jagged bite marks that had torn deep into her flesh. Despite all the hatred she held for me—and the resentment I felt toward her—there was still a pull inside me to help. I was gifted with the powers of the moon goddess, a responsibility that demanded compassion, even for those who least deserved it. Soon enough, others gathered around us. “What happened, Marsai??!! What did you do to her?” Zoe let out a horrified scream when she saw Aya’s condition, and I couldn’t help but roll my eyes. Zoe grabbed me by the arms, and shook me so hard, but she was pulled away by the triplets. The triplets wore expressions of shock and sadness—especially Ethan. I noticed a blonde-haired girl join the crowd, and I assumed she was their sister. There was something strangely familiar about her face, but with all the chaos and panicked whispers from Zoe and the maids, I brushed it aside. Tapping into my wolf’s strength, I crouched down and carefully bundled Aya into my arms. Without a word, I headed for the pack hospital, feeling the others close behind as we moved through the tense silence. Ethan quickly summoned the pack doctor, Martins, who arrived within minutes and tended to Aya’s wounds until she finally seemed stable. Once he’d finished, we all hurried into the room to check on her. Martins straightened his coat, his gaze serious as he looked at us. “Aya was badly bitten by the undead wolf, but because she has a wolf, she should heal quickly. She’ll be fine in about two hours,” he said, though his words left me feeling uneasy. Something about it didn’t sit right with me, and my heartbeat quickened in worry. I turned my head sharply to the side, catching sight of Zoe, along with Ethan and Navian, all nodding in agreement. But Miles had a flicker of fear in his eyes. Could he have the same thought as mine? If Aya had been bitten by an undead wolf, there was a real risk she could turn into one herself! Just as Martins started to leave, I stopped him. “Martins, if Aya’s been bitten by an undead wolf, there’s a chance she could turn into one. We can’t take any risks. She needs to be quarantined, at least for now.” I said firmly, before glancing at the others, searching their faces. “What do you think, guys?” Zoe’s face tightened, her lips pressing into a thin line, and before I knew it, she stormed forward and slapped me hard across my left cheek. “What I think is that you should shut the hell up!” she spat, her voice shaking with fury as her fists clenched at her sides. Pain flared across my cheek. I instinctively pressed a hand to it, stunned by her sudden attack. She didn’t even look the least bit remorseful! “Just because you’ve got the moon wolf powers doesn’t give you the right to act so superior!” she sneered, folding her arms across her chest. “Martins said she’d be fine in two hours—what part of that is too hard for you to understand, huh?” Anger surged through me, my wolf rising up, desperate to strike back. But I took a deep breath, forcing myself to hold back and resist the urge. I bowed my head, tamping down the fury within me. The next sound I heard was Zoe’s sharp wince of pain. My head jerked up, and I saw Miles gripping her wrist so tightly that the pain was etched into her eyes. “Let me go, Miles! You’re hurting me!” she gasped, her face twisting with discomfort. “I’d hurt you a hundred times more, considering you’ve got the nerve to talk back at our mate and slap her.” he growled, his voice thick with fury. “ Don’t push me, Zoe. I could snap your neck in a heartbeat.” His voice seethed with fury, and I felt a lump form in my throat, the anger in his words chilling me to the core. Just then, Navian stormed toward them, yanking Miles’ hand off Zoe’s wrist with a force that left her gasping. Still seething, he locked eyes with Zoe “Listen, Zoe,” he said in a low, commanding tone that sent a chill through me. “Living here doesn’t give you the right to treat the future Luna with such disrespect. Is that clear?” His voice carried an authority that made me flinch, and I could see Zoe’s defiance shrink under his stare. His hazel eyes glowed with a fierce red hue before returning to their normal color, and I couldn’t help but watch in awe. Zoe, clearly not intimidated but frustrated, let out an exaggerated sigh and muttered, “Yes, clearly understood.” As soon as Navian walked away, she shot me a venomous glare that could've killed. I noticed Martins and the blonde-haired girl—whose name I still hadn’t learned—standing with their mouths slightly agape, clearly stunned by the interaction. I, too, was taken aback. Never in a million years had I expected someone to stand up for me like that. My wolf stirred inside me, purring with excitement at the unexpected support. It felt... good. "Marsai’s right, everyone. Aya still needs to be quarantined,” Ethan’s voice cut through the room’s tension, breaking his silence. He slipped his hands into his pockets and leaned against the wall, his gaze steady. “The undead wolf’s bite might be hidden, but its effects will show within a day. To protect everyone—and this pack—we have to keep her closely monitored before she’s released.” A tense silence settled over us, and just as I drew a breath to speak, Zoe jumped in. “Whatever you say! Not like it’s my business anymore since apparently, I’ve lost every right to speak here.” She shrugged carelessly, then turned to the blonde girl standing beside her, visibly fuming. “Dessie, let’s go." Dessie nodded eagerly, trailing after Zoe like a loyal puppy. Martins slipped out of the room in a flash, leaving me standing alone with the triplets. My heart pounded wildly, a deafening beat in my chest, as I realized I was now the only one left with them. I wanted to run, but my feet wouldn’t move. My gaze shifted nervously between the three of them, each one looking back with an expression of pity. They stepped toward me, moving in unison, and their scent wrapped around me, warm and heady, making it hard to think straight. Navian stepped closer, his hazel eyes meeting mine with a warmth that made my heart skip. “You okay, Mars?” he asked softly, reaching up to tuck a stray strand of hair behind my ear. I felt a rush of comfort. Just knowing they had stood up for me was more than enough to make me feel okay. “I’m the only one who gets to call her that, Navian!” Miles protested with a playful pout, stomping his foot like a kid. I couldn’t help but laugh, the sound breaking out louder than I intended—until I remembered where we were. I glanced toward the bed and saw Aya still asleep, her breathing steady. Not wanting to disturb her, I turned back to the triplets, a wide smile spreading across my face. “Let’s not wake Aya while she’s resting,” I whispered. “Why don’t we head to the garden? I... well, I have something I want to tell you all.” Without hesitation, we slipped quietly from the room and made our way to the garden. Once we settled on a bench, I felt their eyes on me, each of them watching with curiosity, waiting to hear what I had to say. “Uhm, it’s about the undead wolf from earlier,” I began, my tone serious as I raised an eyebrow. Their interest deepened, so I continued, “We all know there are undead wolves in our pack now. A lot of them. It’s a threat, and if we don’t act, we could lose lives. We have to do whatever it takes to keep the pack safe.” Ethan’s face fell, a shadow passing over his features. He let out a deep sigh before looking at me. “What do you think we should do, Marsai?”
