The ceremony was attended by Luke’s parents as witnesses, along with the mysterious friend of Granny Esther’s. The woman, who’d introduced herself as Opal earlier in the morning when she’d arrived, was inscrutable throughout the entire affair. Jocelyn wondered if the woman was just bored of the entire thing. The vows, signing the marriage license, everything was done quickly and efficiently. Jocelyn had to take a deep breath before she signed her name on the license. She felt dizzy as she saw her signature next to Luke’s. “It’s done,” said Luke in a heavy voice. Jocelyn didn’t know if he was talking to her or to himself. Luke barely looked at Jocelyn. His kiss, when they’d been pronounced husband and wife, had been a mere peck on the lips. Jocelyn had been tempted to force him back down
