I couldn't speak if my life depended on it. Am I even breathing? Am I dead? I clasp my hands over my heart and it's definitely still beating, extremely fast and hard, but beating nonetheless.
"Cal?" I hear Jake say.
Cal's eyes flicker over to Jake, but almost immediately come back to me. He's panting, his eyes are wild. It's almost as if he's as shocked to see me as I am him.
"You... you're..." My voice is shaky, my whole body is. "I thought you were -"
"Dead. I know." He runs a hand over his face before kneeling down next to me. "I'm so sorry. I just...I had to put an end to this."
I don't know what to say. He's alive. Part of me is relieved to know that, but part of me wants to know why he's here. Why he let me and everyone else believe he was killed.
