Chapter Eighteen - Unannounced Visit

2619 Words
☆Blake☆ Hearing back from Earl had been such a relief and as I flew towards the cabin, I felt alive once again. Bailey was not going to be any more trouble, not after the Seniors sorted things out. In the meantime, I was going to give my best friend and the love of my life, a surprise. I closed my eyes and felt the early morning wind hit against my face in such a way that if I could’ve smiled, I would have. I spread my wings and glided through the clouds with ease and grace. This was my all-time favorite thing about being a dragon shifter. The wonder of being able to soar above the world, to experience the calm and relaxing feeling that came along with it. It gave me peace and it made me feel happy. The closer I got to the forest, the more excited I became. I brought my wings close to my body and angled downwards. I could see the forest ahead and I picked up speed to get there faster. Soaring above the tall trees made me feel like my future was just in my reach. Spotting the cabin, I slowed down, getting ready to descend. I spotted a vehicle driving away from the cabin and I recognized it as Earl’s car. What had he been doing here? I paused as I thought about what this could mean. I had asked Kayne not to tell Dawn about the alleged pregnancy but what if Earl had said something. Suddenly that feeling of hope and the possibility of my future with Dawn was in jeopardy. I moved quickly then and landed carefully next to the garage. I knew Kayne kept a change of clothes inside. I hurriedly shifted back into my human form and moved as quietly as I could into the garage. I looked around for some clothes and spotted a neat pile of pants and tops. I grabbed a pair of navy-blue sweatpants and a plain blacktop. Without wanting to waste another second, I moved towards the front of the cabin. As I stood in front of the closed door, I listened closely. “Morning Dawn,” I heard Kayne greet her and I smiled despite my racing heart. “Good morning did Earl leave already?” she asked him. “Yes, he just left. Would you like some breakfast?” he asked, and I rolled my eyes. What a gentleman. “Why don’t you let me make you breakfast instead? I mean, after last night….” Her voice trailed off and I felt a stab of jealousy course through my veins. What had happened last night? “Sure thing, although I am pretty sure we could just eat from the leftovers,” Kayne suggested. I pressed my palm up against the door, wanting to go inside but stopping myself as my own curious jealousy kept me outside. Spying on the two most important people in my life didn’t feel good and I knew I shouldn’t doubt them. “Sounds like a great idea,” Dawn gushed out. I could hear them moving around in the kitchen and I glanced over at the window. Should I take a peek inside? “Earl was very vague about this investigation,” Dawn suddenly commented, and I let out a loud sigh of relief. If by vague it meant he hadn’t mentioned the lie of Bailey being pregnant then I was in the clear. For now. “Unfortunately, he cannot discuss Senior matters with just anyone,” Kayne responded with a laugh. “Still, doesn’t it seem odd that they would look into something as silly as this?” she asked him. She didn’t know. That confirmed it. I pushed against the door and it opened slowly. “Blake!” Kayne cried out and I wasn’t sure if he was happy to see me or not. I glanced between the two of them as they sat across from each other at the large island in the middle of the kitchen. Dawn smiled and hopped off the barstool, racing towards me. That could only mean she had forgiven me. I opened my arms ready to embrace her and instead of that, when she reached me, she slapped me right across my face. “That’s for not calling me!” she declared and raised her hand again. I allowed her the second hit. “That’s for kissing Bailey even if you didn’t know it was her!” when she raised her hand again, I quickly wrapped my hand around her wrist. “I’m sorry,” I said as I gazed into her eyes. “Please forgive me?” “Of course!” she gushed out before finally latching herself onto me. I quickly embraced her as I wrapped my arms around her waist. It felt good to have her in my arms once again and as I hugged her close and kissed her forehead, I looked over at Kayne and frowned. “What is it, brother?” I asked him curiously. I watched as he shook his head and smiled. “Just surprised to see you,” he answered as he got up from his stool. “Care to join us for some breakfast?” he asked. “Yes! Kayne made a delicious beef stew yesterday,” Dawn informed me as she pulled away and dragged me towards the kitchen. I chuckled as I sat down next to her. Kayne dished me up some of the stew and placed a steamy bowl in front of me. As we ate, I listened to Dawn tell me about her time in the town and how exciting it had been. She told me about falling asleep in front of the fire, to wake up to Kayne cooking. She gushed on about the chocolate pudding and then she mentioned Earl. “I wasn’t aware that he would be stopping by,” Kayne announced almost immediately after she had mentioned him. “Me neither,” I said carefully as I watched him. Kayne seemed to pick up on my silent question and shook his head. That confirmed that Dawn wasn’t aware of what was going on. When we had finished eating, Kayne and I went outside while Dawn cleaned up the kitchen. “I didn’t know you would be showing up today,” Kayne said softly, and I glanced over at him curiously. “Since when do I need to announce anything?” I teased playfully. “Earl said that it would be in my best interest to avoid being anywhere near Bailey until this whole mess has been sorted out. What could be better than coming out here and spending a few days with my best friend and my girlfriend?” I wasn’t sure why, but I could pick up the fact that Kayne was uncomfortable. “What’s wrong?” I asked him seriously. “You need to tell her,” he blurted out and I stared at him. “I mean, she doesn’t deserve to be in the dark about this,” he quickly added. “I will tell her,” I promised. Dawn chose that moment to join us on the porch and I grabbed her hand. “Would you care to go for a walk?” I asked her. “Yes!” she exclaimed with a bright smile. I nodded over at an unhappy-looking Kayne before leading Dawn away from the cabin towards a path I knew by heart. “Dawn, there is something I must tell you,” I started, and she nodded as we walked alongside one another. “Bailey is claiming she is pregnant with my child,” I rushed out to say the truth. Dawn immediately stopped and stared at me. I blushed at how embarrassed I felt and when she started to giggle, I couldn’t help but frown. “She is crazy!” Dawn squealed out in a fit of giggles. I chuckled as I continued walking along the path, forcing her to walk with me. “How could she say something like that?” “I think it may have something to do with the fact that she wants me to marry her,” I said. I kept my hand pressed firmly against her back, making sure that she didn’t stop again. “Are you being serious?” she questioned. “Deadly. That is why Earl probably came by, to get a statement from you and Kayne to help my case against refusing to marry a lying woman,” “That’s terrible,” Dawn said as she leaned against my side. “I hope you fired her,” she added. “I’d love too but I have to wait for the Seniors,” I admitted. “And they will put a stop to all of this?” “Most definitely. Earl called me last night. He already had some facts together and approached the Seniors. He probably just wanted to strengthen his case by getting your statement,” I said as we finally reached the clearing by the river. The weather wasn’t great, and I knew it would be a cold rainy day. I didn’t want to keep Dawn outside for too long. “I am sorry for everything that has happened,” I announced as we stood in the clearing together. “It’s ok, I realize now that she is the crazy one,” she said with a smile. I leaned in and pressed my lips against hers. Kissing Dawn is like breathing. I tasted the salty curry on her lips, and I dived in for more. Holding her small frame against my body made me shiver with delight. She leaned up and wrapped her arms around my neck, pushing herself right up against my chest. I felt alive and hungrily devoured her lips in a kiss that had both of gasping for air just a few moments later. “I love you,’ I announced softly, and I waited to hear what she would say. When she pulled away, I knew immediately that something was wrong. “Blake, I…there is something I have to tell you,” she said hesitantly, and I frowned. “I mean, I love you too,” she said as she looked over at me, but the moment had been ruined. “What is it that you need to tell me?” I asked curiously. Obviously, this new she wanted to share with me was serious enough to interrupt our declaration of love. “I am not who you think I am,” she said, and I wanted to laugh. I genuinely wanted too but I knew she was being serious, and I swallowed down any bubbles of laughter. “What do you mean?” I managed to ask. “I’m not a cleaner,” she informed me, and although I found that an odd confession, I didn’t understand the relevance. ☆Dawn☆ He was looking at me oddly and I knew he didn’t understand what that meant. “I’m not a cleaner, Blake. I can clean and I can cook but it isn’t my job,” I said, trying to explain. “Ok, so what is your job then?” he asked, and I froze. How could I tell him that I am a witch right now? He is going through his own drama and I shouldn’t be adding onto it. “I don’t know,” I lied. “I’ve been jumping from job to job,” another lie. “Is that it?” “Yes,” I lied again. I found it so easy to lie and yet I hated it. I wanted to tell him the truth but fear itself stopped me. Blake turned away and we started walking back towards the cabin. “I want you to know that you don’t need to hide anything from me,” Blake suddenly announced, and I blushed. The guilt was tearing me up inside and I tried to push it away. “I will never judge you,” he added. “Thank you, Blake,” I whispered. The silence in the air was interrupted by the loud roar of Kayne’s motorcycle. Blake chuckled and I looked up at him. “Kayne is probably going into town,” he said. “For what? We got supplies just yesterday,” I said thoughtfully. “He probably wants to give us some space and alone time to talk,” he said, and I nodded. Did that mean Kayne expected me to tell Blake about me being a witch? A cold shudder went through my body as we reached the cabin. Kayne was long gone by then and we went back inside the cabin. “See?” Blake said as he rushed to the kitchen counter. He read the note and then handed it over to me. Hey guys, I’m going out. You know, give you two some privacy. Don’t wait up. Kayne I re-read the note, trying to figure out what it meant. Don’t wait up. Did that mean he wasn’t going to come home? Did I care? Why did I care? I put the note down on the counter and went over to were Blake had gotten comfortable on the sofa. I still felt uneasy about lying to him as I sat down on his lap. We watched the flames of the fire as we cuddled each other. I wasn’t sure if the uneasy feeling I felt was because I knew I had to tell Blake the truth or was it because I was worried that if I didn’t that Kayne would tell him? I had found myself in quite a sticky situation. ☆Kayne ☆ I watched as they walked away down the path and I turned around and went back inside the cabin. Blake wasn’t a fool and I needed to get my head sorted out before they got back. It wouldn’t take my best friend awfully long to realize my true feelings. Why had he shown up today? Why not tomorrow? Admittedly I was quite upset about the fact that my time spent alone with Dawn had come to an end. Blake wouldn’t leave here without her and from the looks of it, she was attached to him. I knew that Blake would take Dawn to that clearing and tell her about Bailey’s so-called pregnancy and her stupid request for marriage. I also knew that Dawn would be understanding and forgiving. The big question is, would she tell Blake the truth about her being a witch. It wouldn’t matter how Blake felt about her, he would never accept her being a witch. Their relationship would end indefinitely. I knew that. I was one hundred percent sure. Fine, ninety percent. I paced the sitting room area as I thought about what they were talking about. Would they kiss? I immediately shoved that thought aside and groaned out loud. Last night I had laid on the couch staring up at the closed door to the room in which Dawn had slept. I had imagined kissing her, feeling her against my body, and had ultimately gotten an erection. I wasn’t proud of it and I wasn’t proud of rushing up to the bathroom to relieve that pressure. Imagining being with Dawn was bad but yet I had enjoyed it. As I thought about my antics of the night, I felt myself grow hard once again. This was getting silly now. I was supposed to be convincing myself to get over her. Not indulge in some fantasy where we make love over and over and over again. Once again, I found myself rushing up the stairs and locking myself in the bathroom. Pushing down my shorts, my erection sprung free and I sighed as I clasped my hand firmly around my shaft. I shouldn’t be doing this. I should stop. I must stop. Yet, I moved my hand up and down as I thought about Dawn laying naked on my bed, with her hair spread out across the bedding. The way her eyes closed, and her mouth fell open in a perfect ‘o’ as I brought her to ecstasy. I erupted and the guilt set in fairly quickly. “I am doomed!” I said as I cleaned myself up. I had to be incredibly careful that Blake didn’t pick up on my erotic feelings towards Dawn. I had to stop this. Once and for all. I made sure I was decent before I rushed downstairs. They weren’t back yet, and I rummaged around the kitchen until I found what I was looking for. I scribbled down a note before I went out to the garage. I needed to getaway. I needed to get Dawn out of my system. I needed a distraction.
