☆Dawn☆
Somehow, I wasn’t surprised that Kayne took us to a cabin in the woods. It was so cliché and yet so very appropriate. Of course, the first thought I had was ‘I hope I don’t die out here’ followed by ‘Does Blake know about this place’. Kayne set us down close to the steps leading up the cabin and I took his bag and headed to the entrance.
“Um, Dawn?” I heard Kayne’s voice from behind me, but I was too caught up in the cabin to face him. Lost in the old pine log cabin, I didn’t hear his footsteps coming up from behind me. When he suddenly took the bag from my hand, I gasped loudly in surprise. “I need it,” he whispered as he placed his palm in the middle of my back, stopping me from turning around. Although he couldn’t see my face, I blushed. I had completely forgotten that he would be naked from shifting back into his human form. I shrugged off the awkwardness and continued looking around. The large wooden door was quite intriguing.
“Come forth light and shine as brightly as you can,” I said softly without thinking. The ball of light appeared, and I slowly flung it towards the two lanterns that hung on either side of the door. It took flame and cast a subtly glow of light, just enough for me to make out the intricate design on the door. A stunning dragon had been carved into the wood and I followed the patterns as it flowed elegantly downwards. I smiled as I thought how once again this was so cliché. Of course, Kayne would have a symbol carved on the front door of his secret cabin.
“You are a witch,” Kayne announced from behind me, and this time I did turn around to face him.
“Oh!” I had no idea what to say or how to explain it to him. I had acted foolishly and had been caught. After weeks and months of hiding my true identity, I had thrown it all away because I had wanted to see better. What a fool!
“No need to say anything, I had my suspicions,” he said. “Beautiful isn’t it?” he asked, gesturing towards the door. I nodded as I took a step away from him. I wasn’t afraid of him, I couldn’t understand it, but I knew that I could trust him. “My grandfather built this place with my father,” he informed me. “My father had the talent of carving designs into wood,”
“It’s lovely,” I complimented.
“Yeah, wait until you see the inside,” he said with a soft chuckle. I watched as Kayne pressed against the door, it was then that I noticed within the design was a wooden press button. The door creaked open and he stepped inside. I took a deep breath and followed him in. “Care to use your magic to light up the rest of this place?” I couldn’t see him, even though there was a tender glow from the moonlight. I sighed before I took another deep breath.
“Light and fire, shine all around, come again to soothe my mind,” I whispered. Another ball of light appeared, and I quickly spread my arms out wide. The ball split and moved around until lanterns where lit throughout the cabin. I stared at the utter beauty that I saw before me. I had been expecting luxury or a resemblance of the castle but instead, I was in awe of the layout. The sitting area was to my right and it was large and looked comfortable. The fireplace stood against the far wall and to my left was the kitchen and dining area. In the middle of the room against the far wall was a staircase that led to the upstairs area, which I could see from here. A balcony inside of the cabin and I could see three doors. I wasn’t sure but if I had to guess it was two bedchambers and a bathroom. The walls and floors were all pine and the open ceiling allowed me to see all the beams that held everything in place. I started walking further into the cabin and I couldn’t help but smile. All of the furniture was wooden, and I could see the intricate designs on each object. The wooden frame of the sofa was dark and rich against the sandy-colored cushions. The dark red wooly carpet looked comforting and warm against the lightness of the pine floors. I glanced over to the other side and giggled. Where everything looked vintage and wooden, the kitchen was modern and had everything you would need. A stainless-steel double door fridge, a six-plate gas stove, a microwave, a dishwasher, and quite a fancy setup to make coffee.
“What do you think?” Kayne asked me and I faced him.
“It’s beautiful,” I responded honestly. Kayne smiled and placed his bag down on the large sofa.
“There are two bedchambers upstairs with a bathroom. You’ll find some of my sister's clothes in the closet, please feel free to freshen up,” he said, and I quickly nodded, eager to see the upstairs. I hurried to the staircase and stopped. Kayne’s father had even carved a beautiful design along the banister. I took the stairs two at a time and opened the first door on my right. It was a bedchamber. Two three-quarter beds stood on either side of the room with a bedside table between them. The frames of the beds were wooden, no surprise, and the bedside table and footstools at the end of the beds where wooden too. A soft-looking armchair stood in the corner of the room with a small bookcase next to it. It wasn’t necessarily a childish room, but I had to assume this is where Kayne and his sister would sleep. I went over to the closet and found it full. Shoes, clothes, toiletries, books, and even some toys. I smiled as I rummaged through the clothing until I found a pair of soft pink sweatpants and a black t-shirt. Both items looked as if it would fit me, so I hurried to close the closet door and hurry to the next room. It was a bathroom and it was modern just like the kitchen. A large corner jacuzzi bath, a large looking shower, a basin sat upon a counter and the toilet. The sleek sandy colored tiles lined not only the floor but the walls as well. The ceiling was still pine, but the room felt warm and cozy. I went over to the cupboard and found more toiletries, toilet paper, towels, and cleaning supplies. I took out one of the dark chocolate brown towels and set it aside from the clothes on the counter. I hurried to undress and turn on the water in the shower. Although we were in the middle of nowhere, the water didn’t take long to heat up. It wasn’t scolding but it was warm enough for me to take a refreshing shower. I used the lavender-scented shower gel and shampoo to cleanse myself and when I was done, I slipped out and dried myself before getting dressed. The sweatpants fitted perfectly but the t-shirt was a bit big. It was then that I realized it must be Kayne’s. I blushed but quickly found a new toothbrush in the draw and brushed my teeth. With my minty-fresh breath and my clean, relaxed body, I headed back downstairs. I spotted Kayne in the kitchen making coffee.
“Thank you,” I said as I sat down at the island. Kayne glanced over at me, frowned, and then chuckled. “Yes, I think it’s yours,” I said lightheartedly.
“It is, but its not a problem. Would you care for a cup of chocolate?” he then asked, and I craned my neck to see what he meant. I had thought it was a coffee machine but apparently, it made chocolate too.
“That would be great,” I admitted. I wasn’t much for coffee in the evenings let alone in the middle of the night, so I was grateful that the hot drink Kayne placed in front of me wasn’t full of caffeine.
“Blake phoned while you were showering,” he said as he sat down across from me. I nodded as I slowly picked up the cup and took a sip.
“Oh?” I wasn’t sure what else to say.
“Yeah, he tried to explain things, but I told him to give us a few days. He wasn’t happy about it, but he eventually agreed,” he informed me, and I nodded once again as I sipped at the delicious chocolate drink. “What exactly did you see?” Kayne asked me after a good few minutes of silence. I took a deep breath as I placed the cup down and looked over at him.
“I had wanted to fix things with him after a bit of a disastrous date. I stopped by his door, unsure of whether to knock or just enter and it was then that I heard a noise come from inside. So, I opened the door to see Bailey on top of him, and they were kissing. I may have said something which was when Blake threw her off from him,” I told him. It was hard to re-live that moment, but I understood that Kayne needed some clarity on the situation.
“What was their reaction?” he asked. I thought back and sighed.
“Honestly, Blake looked more shocked to see Bailey than to see me. I don’t even remember looking at her before I ran out,” I admitted. Now that I think about it, Blake did look confused when he saw that it was Bailey on the floor. Was it possible he had thought she was me? But then again, the light hadn’t been off so that didn’t make any sense.
“According to Blake, he thought it was you that had entered his room. He said he had been laying on the bed, relaxing when Bailey came in. He hadn’t wanted the person to know he was awake, so he pretended to be asleep. He explained that when she climbed on the bed and kissed him, he had known it wasn’t you and that he had just been about to throw off the intruder when you came in. Now, I’ve known Blake my whole life and I’ve seen him use women,” Kayne suddenly stopped and looked at me wide-eyed. “I’m sorry, I…shouldn’t-”
“I know about it,” I said dismissively.
“Alright, well, Blake has never looked at, flirted with, or made a move on any of the women I have been with, past and present,” he said, and I nodded as I listened to him. “I believe Blake when he tells me he isn’t doing anything with Bailey. I believe his side of the story. What I don’t believe is Bailey,” he sighed loudly as he roughly ran his fingers through his hair. “She spoke as if they were already lovers, she made it out as if this has been going on for a while,”
“Yes,” I agreed.
“But, honestly Dawn, as much as I liked Bailey, I barely know her,” he said. “Between the two of them, I know Blake is the one telling me the truth,”
“I don’t know Bailey all that well either but then again, I am still getting to know Blake,” I admitted as I finished off the chocolate drink. “Either way, I am glad you brought me here. A few days away from the situation will hopefully help,” I avoided looking at Kayne then as I realized he probably had questions about me being a witch.
“I didn’t tell him,” Kayne suddenly said, and I shrugged. I wasn’t stupid, I knew what he was referring too. “Are you a spy then?” he asked, and I sighed. It would be pointless in lying.
“Yes,” I answered simply. I refused to go into any details.
“Look, Dawn, I don’t know what the deal is, and I don’t care to know, but I will tell you this when Blake finds out and believe me, he will. He is going to be upset, I strongly suggest you come clean to him about who you are and all that,” Kayne stood up and took both our cups to the sink. I watched as he rinsed out the cups and then he turned to face me. “Blake is like my brother and I have no right to ask you anything until you’ve spoken to him, but I will give you a fair warning, if you are not serious about your relationship with him then don’t go back. Go back to wherever you came from,” he finished his speech and walked away. I could hear the soft creeks on the floorboards and then the stairs as I figured he was probably going to bed. I stayed seated as I thought about what he had just said. He immediately put two and two together. Witch equals spy. He knew I wasn’t here just for the job and he was telling me to be honest with Blake. But how could I? How could I tell him after lying to him for so long? Would he give me a chance to explain? I wasn’t sure and I had no idea what to do. I got off the stool and headed back upstairs. I could hear the shower in the bathroom, so I quickly went back into the bedchamber I had been in earlier. I could only assume that he would sleep in the masters. Looking between the two beds, I knew who’s belonged to who. Kayne’s bed, on the right-hand side, had a dark navy-blue comforter and his sister's bed had a dark red comforter. Well, I assumed what I wanted and quickly pulled back the red covers and got into bed. I squeezed my eyes closed as I tried my hardest not to cry. I had to believe that everything would be alright.

I glanced over at the door that Dawn had left open and sighed. She is a witch. A traitorous witch. A spy sent by her coven to gather who knows what on me, Blake, and the other dragons. This was worse than what had happened earlier with Bailey. Blake was going to be heartbroken when he found out. I prayed that when we returned to the castle, that Dawn would tell him the truth. However, if she chose to go back home then I would know how she truly felt. I didn’t believe that though, it was easy to watch the love blossom between them and I hated everything that was happening. Bailey was someone I would deal with when I returned. She didn’t deserve to explain anything, even if she wanted too. In my world, dragons don’t tolerate lies, cheating, and manipulation. Bailey would get what she deserved. I went into the master bedchamber and sighed again. I was tired but I knew I wouldn’t be able to sleep. I had forgotten to tell Dawn to sleep here. This had been my parent's room. I turned around and left the room and went back downstairs. The sofa was relatively comfortable to sleep on. I certainly wasn’t going to sleep in my own bed with Dawn just on the other side. I went to the cabinet and pulled out a folded blanket and got comfortable on the sofa. Tomorrow I would spend some time with Dawn and then I would be able to understand her better. I needed to know a few things even though I had told her I didn’t care to know anything. I closed my eyes and forced my mind to switch off. I needed to rest.
