☆Dawn☆
I yawned as I opened my eyes and stretched. The morning sunlight shone directly into the room and I couldn’t help but smile. I pushed back the covers and sat up. Looking around the room just made me remember where I was and why I was here. Although now, the feeling of betrayal was now from my side and not Blake’s. Kayne was right. I knew that I had to tell Blake the truth. I was head over heels in love with him and he deserved to know the real me. I got up and left the room. As I approached the stairs, I spotted Kayne sprawled out on the sofa below. I frowned as I descended down the stairs. Why hadn’t he slept in the other room? I went into the kitchen area and pulled open the fridge. I could see a carton of milk, a tray of eggs and that was it. Opening up the freezer section, I saw a packet of pork sausages. I checked the expiry date and then smiled. I could make us some breakfast. I took out the sausages, eggs, and milk and placed everything on the counter. I moved and worked in the kitchen as quietly as I could so not to wake Kayne. I carefully placed the frozen sausages in the oven on a baking tray and then got started on scrambling some eggs. I got the coffee machine ready and then went back to the eggs.
“You are up early,” the sudden sound of Kayne’s voice had me screaming and dropping the spatula on the floor. “Sorry, I thought you heard me,” I heard him chuckle as I bent down to pick up the spatula.
“No, it’s ok, good morning,” I hurried to greet him as I quickly wash off the utensil.
“Morning,” he said as he went over to the coffee machine. “What are you making?” he then asked as he waited for the machine to finish brewing the fresh pot of coffee.
“I found some pork sausages in the freezer, I’ve put them in the oven,” I said as I glanced over at the oven. They wouldn’t take too long. “And scrambled eggs,”
“Nice, I’ll go to town after breakfast and get some supplies, would you like to come with me?” he asked, and I switched off the gas plate and turned to face him.
“I’d like that, thank you,” I said before taking out two white porcelain plates and cutlery. I checked the sausages and decided they were taking a little bit too long. I took out another frying pan and transferred the sausages from the oven tray to the pan. Making sure they were cooked inside; I quickly browned the outside. I put the eggs back on just to warm them up before dishing up the food for us. I set the plates down on the island as Kayne set down our coffee.
“thank you,” he said as he sat down and started to eat. I quickly joined him and hummed in delight at the delicious taste of the sausages.
“I haven’t had this in a while,” I explained when I saw Kayne eyeing me. He chuckled loudly but nodded in agreement. We finished our breakfast in silence and when he was done, he politely excused himself to get finished. I tied up the kitchen and put the dishes in the dishwasher before heading upstairs. I could hear him in the bedroom, so I waited by the closed door for him to finish.
“I took out some clothes and put them on the bed for you,” Kayne announced when he opened the door. I smiled before moving past him and I saw the items on his bed. I blushed as I hadn’t yet made up the other bed yet, but it was pointless to be embarrassed as he had already gone into the bathroom. I quickly shut the door and hurriedly got dressed. The demin fitted perfectly and snug around my legs, behind and hips. The flora loose-fitting top wasn’t my style, but I put it on. I glanced down at my bare feet and sighed. The pair of sneakers I had worn wasn’t going to fit in with the outfit and so I ventured to the closet to see if there was something inside, I could wear. After looking for a moment, I spotted a pair of black ankle boots and I silently prayed that they were my size. Luckily, Kayne’s sister and I shared the same shoe size and I slipped them on easily enough. When I left the room, I could hear Kayne talking to someone downstairs. As curious as I was, I forced myself to ignore it and went into the bathroom to freshen up. I didn’t take too long, although I did wonder how we would be going into town as I left the bathroom and headed down the stairs.
“All done?” Kayne asked me when I joined him on the porch.
“Yes,” I said as I stared at the motorcycle that stood close to the steps.
“It was my father’s,” Kayne explained sadly, and I nodded as I continued to stare at it.
“Where did it come from?” I asked curiously.
“From the garage of course,” came his smart reply. I lightly punched his arm and he laughed as he went over to the monster of a motorcycle. “Come on,” he said, and I hesitantly went towards it. How where we supposed to go shopping with a motorcycle? I didn’t want to ask this question out loud as I climbed up behind him. Wait! Where were the helmets? “The town isn’t too far from here, as soon as we leave the woods, you will see it,” he said, and I closed my mouth. Maybe he thought since it wasn’t that far that protection wasn’t needed. The loud roar of the monstrous engine startled me and everything else in the forest. I wrapped my arms around his waist and held on tightly as he pulled away. He didn’t drive the vehicle at a fast pace and that gave me the luxury of looking around me as we moved through the woods on the path. When we cleared the forest, I could see the small town in the distance. It wasn’t a big town, not from how I saw it, but I could feel that longing fill me. I loved small towns, close communities, and the feeling of home. Kayne pulled onto the road and picked up speed. I held on tightly as I pressed my face against his back. It didn’t take us long to get into town and when he stopped, he waited for me to climb off first. I couldn’t help but just smile as I looked around at the busy street with all the little shops. The bakery, the butchery, the coffee shop, the laundromat, the clothing stores, and the list goes on. A small town with quite a busy day.
“This place is amazing,” I said as Kayne led me to the small local convenience store.
“When I was younger, we used to go to the cabin at least once a month. My sister and I would come down to the town with my mother and have sweets and tea. Those times are some of my favorite memories,” Kayne explained as we entered the store. “When Blake started coming along, my sister stopped,” he added sadly, and I frowned as I glanced over at him. “Right, shall we begin?” I nodded to his question and we started going through the aisles. Kayne pushed the trolly and insisted that I put in whatever I wanted. Aside from the coffee, tea, milk, sugar, bread, eggs, and so on, I placed some fish, chicken, beef, and sausages into the trolly. Kayne took multiple packets of crisps and other sweet treats. I shook my head at his childish behavior and added some fresh fruits and ice cream. When we were done shopping and standing in the queue to be assisted, I decided it would be the right time to ask a particularly important question.
“Kayne?”
“Yes?”
“How are we going to get all of this back to the cabin?” I asked him seriously. He stared at me with a blank look on his face for about ten seconds and then he burst out laughing. I didn’t need to look around to know that people were starting, wondering what was so funny. I felt myself blush and I decided that the white tiled floor was suddenly remarkably interesting to study.
“Oh, Dawn! You crack me up!” I heard Kayne exclaimed but I continued to count the freckled spots on the tiled floor. I hadn’t noticed the spots before, and I found them interesting. “They have a small truck that will deliver it for us,” he said softly, and I nodded. “I didn’t mean to embarrass you,” he added, and I knew that instead of my cheeks returning to their natural color, I had turned an even brighter shade of pink. When it was our turn, I helped unpack the trolly. Kayne paid and arranged for the truck to deliver the groceries to the cabin. We headed back outside, and I lifted my face up to the sun. I closed my eyes and just breathed in the scent of freshly cut grass and the distinctive smell of rain. I opened my eyes and frowned.
“Rain is coming,” I announced, and Kayne nodded.
“I had wanted to go for coffee, but I don’t want to wait and get stuck in the mud,” he said before going back inside the store. I waited for him as I stood there by the motorcycle watching the sky turn from a bright shade of blue with soft puffs of white clouds, to a dark gloomy grey. It changed the atmosphere and I could see people rushing around, probably to get back home before the skies open up and rain down upon this small town. “Come on, they will be right behind us,” Kayne said as he quickly hopped onto the motorcycle. I joined him and held on as the engine roared to life. I noticed a young man get into a truck with the store's logo and smiled. It didn’t take Kayne long to get us back to the forest entrance, but we waited for the truck to catch up.
“Go ahead!” the young man yelled out and Kayne entered the woods. This time he wasn’t as slow as earlier and I understood the urgency to get back to the cabin. Kayne drove straight to the garage, which turned out to be at the back of the cabin. I climbed off and hurried to the front to see the truck coming up. The sky was dark, but no rain had fallen yet. I watched as the man got out of the truck and went around to the back. Kayne rushed past me to assist him and I stood there watching. I felt numb for some reason and so I turned around and went inside the cabin. It wasn’t warm but it wasn’t chilly, however, my eyes landed on the fireplace and with determination, I set my target on getting it on the go. I hummed out a soft tune as I worked and when I was done, I sat back on the sofa and admired my handy work.
“It would help if it was lit,” I heard Kayne comment and I glanced up at him as I blushed once again. He chuckled as he went over and lit the perfect pile of logs I had arranged inside the fireplace. The sudden warmth was welcoming, and I got comfortable on the sofa. I stared at the red flames flickering as I thought about my situation. I knew that sooner or later; I would have to make a choice but for right now I just wanted to enjoy this. After a long time later, I felt the opposite side of the sofa dip slightly as Kayne sat down.
“Sorry, I didn’t help,” I whispered, referring to the fact that he had packed away the groceries himself.
“No problem, Dawn,” he said with a smile. I felt comfortable and tired. I scooted closer to him and rest my head on his shoulder.
“This place is so beautiful, I could stay here forever,” I admitted honestly as I closed my eyes. The warmth from the fire and the radiating heat from Kayne made me feel like I was being wrapped up in a cozy blanket. I felt safe and I felt like I was home. I smiled to myself at the thought before I let myself fall asleep.
☆Kayne☆
I could hear her heavy breathing and I knew she had fallen asleep. It wasn’t an awkward position, but I didn’t feel comfortable with my best friend's girl sleeping on me the way that she was. Dawn’s arm had snaked around my stomach and she was holding me quite tightly. I didn’t mind the affection, but it wasn’t appropriate. I waited until I could hear her soft snores and then gently pushed her back until she was laying on the other side. I stood up and arranged her legs and took the folded-up blanket I had used the night before to cover her. She moaned as I lifted her head and placed a pillow underneath. I looked down at her and sighed. Blake had definitely been blessed. Dawn is not only beautiful, but she has such a caring, calming nature about her. The fact that she was a witch meant nothing to me, but I knew that if Blake heard the truth, he would turn away from her. His history with witches would never allow him to see past that. It was a shame and I found myself wishing she had been mine. My short time with Bailey had been fast-paced and tiring. Although I had found myself attracted to her, I had to be honest, it was just physical attraction. Not once did I ever feel that I was developing feelings for her. I shook my head and went to the kitchen to start preparing lunch. Dawn may be hungry when she wakes up and with the heavy downpour of rain that I could clearly hear, I knew that a hearty bowl of beef stew would be delicious and warming. I got started by cleaning and cutting onions and garlic. I was slightly worried that the smell would wake her up but every time I looked over at her, she was still sleeping. It was while I was preparing the beef that it hit me like a ton of bricks. I, Kayne Parkmore, was falling awfully hard for Dawn Morgan. I sighed as once again I looked over at the female that had my heart. This was turning into a mess and I needed to step away from her before I did something I shouldn’t. I turned my back to her and continued preparing the beef for the stew. I had been silly to think my feelings weren’t real or important and now, I had to face the cold hard truth. The question was, what the hell am I going to do now?
