Chapter 25: Humans will still judge you anyway

1973 Words
Kai Two weeks after that visit at Angel’s children's home, I was seated in my office thumbing away on my keyboard while constantly checking my watch. The thirty-two inch syinix frameless TV in my office was on and it was capturing my attention a little. There was a debate going on about my visit to little Angels. I had not found time to watch one of those always criticizing infidels who found the time and audacity to tarnish my name and I blamed the human’s illusion of freedom. Apparently my name was being used for commercial purposes. Told you, I was carrying the damn city on my back. "People like Kai Watson who have achieved everything in life don't care. He has proven that many times, chasing the media away like a rabid dog, no interviews or updates on inquiries into his businesses, he doesn't explain anything to anyone. The man is the real embodiment of arrogance. That one visit doesn't erase a lot of mistakes in the past. He is still the broken narcissistic son of a b***h he is!" That guest on air seemed to hate me more than I hated myself for the fact that I couldn't save my mother that fateful night on that road. He had a shiny bald head, big the size of Heathrow airport with grey hair covering the back of his head from the middle. In a red tie, old school black suit with his cheeks hanging like a baboons balls. f**k him. He wasn’t aging well really, too much for old is gold. "But Kai hasn't said anything about it, he didn't carry a camera like the rest of those in his class do and he never said he did it to make people love him. I think Kai has come to terms with the fact that anyone is free to think of him how they want" the sassy news anchor came to my defense, she was once a potential but we never met. "He doesn't have to say it. We both know Kai, we've known him since he took over from his dad..." "But the Watson Empire has thrived under his stewardship" "Because the employees are scared s**t of him" "But it works not to mention their salaries are paid on time, that's what you're saying" "For him yeah, but it doesn't make it right just because it works. The means don't justify the end" "It seems you have a personal problem with Kai, His employees would have left the organization already. Am not saying he is perfect, he has his faults. All am saying is do you think this approach to try and rebuild his relationship with people and rebrand his tarnished image will finally change the way people see him?" "It can work for those who are ready to be brain washed" "Should I remind you that he is the only billionaire who has done something to reduce pollution and global warming...?” A knock on my door interrupted my watching I switched off the TV and shouted a quick come in. No one came in, my best guess was dad. Anyway to fill you in on what the reporter was trying to say, I chose to buy a bus that ferried my employees to work and back to their homes everyday like school children. They loved the idea, that way I saved pollution from roughly fifty four cars daily. Others chose to use bicycles instead but not cars. That's why the Watson tower parking lot was empty on a Working day. We also had tree planting activities annually. Dad finally walked in doing I don't know what on his phone. He was in a white polo T-shirt, baseball cap on his head and shorts with sports shoes on his feet. "Dad what a surprise?" I said leaving my seat to welcome him. "Cut the bullshit you knew I was coming meters away, can you help me text your mother" he said angrily handing me the phone as he collapsed in the coach, "tell her am driving" I hesitated. He wanted me to lie. Unless he was driving her crazy we all know he wasn't. Was there trouble in paradise? Well, he called their arrangement a marriage even though they were not each other's mates. "Go ahead and lie damn it! It's not like you don't lie" "I sense lies not tell them" "Am an alpha like you. Speaking of lies have you told your little romantic bird who you really are?" That was a KO in a war of words. I hang my head in shame and went ahead to type the text as he instructed. "Done, what can I get you?" "Beer, your mother is stressing me. I don't know why women become so boring after marriage" he said relaxing his back on the couch, his legs on the glass table in the middle, so rude but again it technically was his office. The design and everything was his idea I just inherited it and changed nothing to honor him in my own way. And no, he didn’t even notice. "You can talk through it am sure" "Am going to let her calm down. Am crushing at your place" he said when I handed him the beer. "Let me guess, you'll need me to go talk to her" "Stay the f**k out of my mind kid" he said and drank his beer returning the can on the desk with a bang, "Everyone is talking about you" "Yeah I figured" "What were you doing there anyway?" "Just went to see those kids. I didn't intend for everyone to start judging and am not looking for sympathy or fame, am famous enough" "You're an Alpha male, you don't need it. You did well son, I knew you'll find your way back. You're not broken you're just...I don't even know what to say anyway, your insomnia and nightmares" My dad cared about me. A lot since I was his only heir but he had this weird belief if he showed it to me I was going to be weak and wither away. So he just picked me up after mum's death and threw me right in the ocean, swim or sink. I swam, gained my alpha status and now he couldn't show any care or pretend to. "Am doing therapy, they are subsiding. Lynn has been really helpful" "And have you found out what makes her special? I mean if you still believe she is the cure to your guilt and psychological torture" "Not yet dad you won't understand" "I will of you can explain or any of your learned friends" Dad was just trying to get in my head as usual make me feel like I wasn't doing the right thing. Personally, I had decided to stop worrying about what was making her special and just enjoy the specialty she was bringing in my life. With her I slept like a baby, without her I managed a few hours of good sleep followed by nightmares. To me that was progress. "There is no explanation, besides something's are better off left unexplained" "Okay, I should meet her. After we talk to your mum" He really needed my help after all. That could only mean the rift was too huge for the two of them to fix by themselves. Even before hearing from both sides I could tell the fault was dads. There was a lot of stupid things he could have done. At their age I had always thought they were past fighting. "I will talk to her" "Do you think this is long term, what you have?" "I can't tell but she is different, unlike any of the girls I've had in the past" "Go for it" he said and emptied his can, "Are you heading home we tag along or Arthur will take me home?" "Let's grab a few drinks at the club, we haven't been seen together in public for some time, this critics should know the Watson's are stronger together than they think" "Spoken like my own son. Don't worry about them, doleful humans will still judge you anyway even if you die for their sins" From the office dad and I walked one cabin to another. He wanted to see how things were going with the employees who were surprised to see him there. We then used the stairs back to the parking lot where Arthur was waiting. Dad's driver had to go home in an empty car. ***** Club seventy was packed as usual. It didn't matter what day of the week it was and what the media was talking about me. As a matter of fact the moment we walked in with dad, the revelers cheered so loud that the DJ had to switch off the music and the artist on stage had to pause his performance. Either they loved dad so much or they were acting under the influence of alcohol because there was no way that energy was for me. Dad waved them down as Arthur and three other guards created a path and a barrier between us and the rowdy crowd. We finally got to the stage and dad picked up the mic. He had always been a good orator than I was, with a tongue sweet as honey that, given a chance could have convinced pharaoh in the bible instead of the ten plagues. "Thank you guys! Thank you and welcome to club seventy!" An ear blasting cheer came from the crowd. Ringing so loud that my wolf wanted to run out of my body. "Am glad to see you too" he crossed his heart with his right hand, I alone knew he didn't care about them as long as they paid for the fun they were having, "And am grateful for the support you're giving my son...Kai ladies and gentlemen!" He brought the mic towards me and that got me by surprise, to make it even more confusing the crowd was cheering. For me? Well maybe humans only judge when sober. Either way it didn't matter to me, as long as I had Lynn by my side. She was slowly becoming my everything. "Thank you for the love, wow! You guys are gonna make me cry" I said flashing a smile, "I know you're not used to me doing this, but I want to let you know I met someone" they interrupted with a cheer. Though she was going to choke the hell out of me I chose to put our relationship public. That's what an average girl would have wanted, contract or not. "And she has been teaching me a lot. I wish you guys get someone too, have fun!" We waved at them on our way to the VIP room, they continued having fun. As anticipated my phone buzzed and it was Lynn. "Before you yell at me, I had nothing to say to the crowd. They have never cheered me before" "Yeah, in this city you're like the guy who beats up everyone's favorite hero. They hate you...anyway, I didn't call you to yell" "Then why did you call?" "To remind you that you have to call me sometimes" she said and hang up. I realized dad was staring at me with his mouth wide open and for once I thought maybe I was growing a tail on my forehead. "Is that the Lynn?" He asked. "Yeah, let me call her back" I said making for the door. "She is good for you. Matching your energy, I hope you enjoyed the thrill of the chase" "You have no idea what it took" I left the room. Well, I should have learned to read between the lines. My old man was being sarcastic and cryptic the whole time.
