Chapter 42: Stumbling block

1944 Words
Ava A holiday for my kind was not such a big deal it was something for the pathetic humans so in our coven it was business as usual besides it was hard to enjoy a holiday when the end of worlds in the name of Luca was looming in the shadows. The young witches were being taught new spells and collecting spell ingredients, the older ones were practicing some spells in the spell room of the castle under the guidance of the experienced ones like me. We had to be ready if we were to win the war that was coming we needed all hands on deck. The door flew open, followed by a wind and then in my mum came. Red hot lips in a black cloak on her velvet blue dress and black heels. She looked younger for a woman her age and she was the bossy lady around. "You have to concentrate, train your mind to one particular thing that sparks your anger that makes you live, wakes you up every morning. Use that to light up that candle. You're not leaving until the candle lights...Ava" "Mum" "A word please" she said dragging to the balcony. Our coven was resting in the middle of the woods, fenced and protected by a private security firm for our safety and that of the young witches and wizards we had rescued and kept rescuing. For close to a minute mum and I just stood there watching the sprawling emerald green forest, the birds and the butterflies, the witch warriors training in close combat at a distance. "Mum, everything okay?" "Yeah, am okay. How is you and Kai going? Does he like you? Do you see you two getting married?" "Relax mum it has been a minute" "We don't have time Ava, you need him by our side if we're to defeat Luca. He is the Alpha of all alphas and you're the missing piece, the catalyst to unlock the power that’s hidden in him" "You don't understand mum, there is a problem in the name of Lynn. I think he loves her and he can't get rid of her" "So help him. Sometimes you have to make the tough choices if you want to get where you want to be..." "Mum, we don't kill innocent people just because they are not our kind" "You can't possibly tell me you're willing to save a single life, human life-the reason why we live hidden in the woods and hanging at the balance is the hundreds of lives of your kind to me you sound like a traitor. Get Kai to be yours quickly or get rid of that model that is standing between you two, simple as that!" She said and walked out. If you asked me, Lynn did not deserve to die. She was sweet and calm, too pretty to die and too pretty to even care about other people yet she was still humble and social using a cab, eating ice cream on the road, chatting with random strangers and helping the needy...yeah I was stalking her. It all started when mum told me she had found me a person to marry. Marriage of necessity it did not matter if I loved him or not and when he said Kai was that man I started gathering as much information about her as possible. They looked so happy together that I felt guilty of breaking what they had. Yet mum was right. The future of my kind was hanging in the balance. With no Lynn in the picture Kai would be frustrated and he'd need someone to fill that void. All of a sudden I didn't feel even guilty to see her die as long as Kai was mine and my kind was saved...with a little twist though but anyway, that aside. I took out my phone and dialed Kai. We had agreed he was going to break up with Lynn the moment she flew back in. "Hello Kai, missed me?" "Yeah, so much, not the right time can I call you later" he said in almost a whisper and I could imagine the look of confusion and fear on his face, he was with her, probably lying in his arms as we talked. "Don't worry this won't take long, you managed to do as we discussed or...." "Not yet, I'll call you later just be patient" "Okay fine!" I said and hung up. No surprise there. I wasn't dissapointed with Kai. His love for her was evident the very first time we met. He was just too dumb to realize it but he cared much about her and that now was my problem. He forced my hand, whatever was going to happen next was not on me. It was on him. "Are you going somewhere?" Mum asked when I briskly walked downstairs. "Yes I won't be long, don't worry' "Wait" She said leaving her seat, the room was full of fragrance of burning witch ingredients, candles and of course Luca's sign on a piece of paper was in the magic triangle created by the mountain ash. Mum held my hands, "I can feel a lot of anger, am sorry about my earlier idea don't do anything to harm her. I remember when you triggered your magic after killing your friend...." "Mum!" My mother sucked at giving advice, she would crush you to build you up again. Digging the snakes we couldn't kill at that moment. No day had gone by without me thinking of her and now that she had bought it up I was already feeling guilty of wishing Lynn death just because she was on the way of my happiness or what I considered to be mine. Her only mistake was being beautiful and unforgettable. "I have to say this, you barely made it alive due to the guilt and it almost cost you your gift I don't want that for you. Just find another way to hasten the process it's not like you're going to spend your entire life with him..." "Hold up when did the deal change?" I asked in astonishment. I was surprised, why the f**k would she suggest me getting rid of Lynn for a short term marriage? Clearly we had different interests. "Yes, that's the definition of a marriage of convenience, don't tell me you love him" she said making it sound like being in love with him would be the worst mistake of my life. "No I just..." She started sniffing me all over like a rabid dog, very uncomfortable and I didn't even know the necessity of what she was doing despite knowing her all my life. "I can smell him all over you. Did you..?" "Mum am an adult okay? He couldn't get sleep so my hands were tied besides he is irresistible" "Okay, okay, even better I was worried about you not liking him since no one does like him really and he doesn't like anyone" "You should see him with Lynn" "I'd crush her skull without blinking and touching her head. You do what you have to do to get him as part of this family as soon as you can. Bring him over, dinner tomorrow" mum said and broke free which meant it was not up for debate. "One thing mum" I said running after her trying to match her pace, she was walking briskly upstairs. "What?" "He is not vegetarian like us can we have..." "I know what you mean don't worry. Just get to whatever you were going to do" "Okay mum" When she got to the end of the flight of stairs she turned around to look at me, one long stare and I could read her eyes. Calm and relaxed communicating. "Be safe, send my regards to his parents and him" "I will" That's all I needed. Her blessing before heading out of the compound past the magical barrier that couldn't allow anyone not in our coven to come in. Earlier on before she stopped me I was at a very dark place in my mind thinking of nothing but death and harm on Lynn. But then, hoping Kai was going to agree to the dinner request, some mischief would do. Just to make her a little uncomfortable. Kai Since that secretive phone call with Ava I was feeling less active. Thank God Lynn had not realized it yet, we were just enjoying a swim in the pool on board under the hot sun sipping our martini, she was floating on top of an inflated blue raft with her sun glasses, a hat made of reed her legs crossed facing the sun directly, stealing glances at me the other end, afraid of getting closer to her because she would have sniffed it out of me. The truth. "It's so sad that tomorrow we're going back to work, I mean they should have put this holiday on Friday so that we have an extended weekend" "A three days weekend? Which employer would agree to that?" "You wouldn't?" "No, there is a lot to be done" "I see, what do I know am also employed and I haven't been around for the past week so it's actually unfair that am enjoying this holiday with the rest of them" "Exactly, you should be somewhere seated behind a desk with a bunch of papers waiting for your attention" "Then you'd be alone unless" she sipped her martini and dropped her sunglass to look at me, "You have my replacement" My heart started to thud in a rather surprising way. There it was, the same feeling of guilt and emptiness I felt after having s*x with Ava. Arthur was right, it was time to face my fears and tell her the truth. "There is no one I'd rather be with in the middle of the ocean on a hot afternoon" "I see. Come here there is something in your hair" she said with a lot of seriousness. Quickly my hand swept across my head. That was me trying to avoid getting closer to her. She shook her head to show it was still there and I had to go to her for help. Smart, probably there was nothing there she wanted me to be close. I swam towards her and she cupped my face then kissed me, deeply while ruffling up my hair. "Now, are you going to tell me what's eating you up or what?" My heart stopped for a second there, when it restarted she was looking through me calmly, her lips wet from that kiss glowing in the sun. There was no hiding from her. "Am okay" "I know you so well Kai, who called? What did they say, I overheard you talking on phone and since then you're giving me so weird vibes" Before meeting Lynn It had never occured to me that it would come a point in my life where someone, with no supernatural powers of course would care for me that much, know whether I was happy or sad okay or not and I'd feel so answerable to them. I mean come on, as an alpha werewolf I was only answerable to me. "If it's something urgent you can go ahead and take care of it. Take me home, this is no longer fun not when your attention is divided" "Hey" "It's okay, you also need some alone come on let's get ready" she said leaving the pool, "Tell the captain to take us back to the shore will you?" "Okay mum" I said trailing behind. My phone beeped, it was a text from Ava.
