Lynn
That evening, seated in the back seat of the Royce, in Arthur's absence he was the driver and someone would have thought I was the young rich spoilt billionaire and he was my handsome driver. It was quiet in the car, he was concentrated on the road and I was going through the paper, flipping through the pages and reading the fashion section.
Even without looking I could feel his eyes on me via the rear view mirror. Cutting our holiday short was the best thing to do for both of us. I needed time to prepare for work the next day and so did he. He also had to see his parents even though he was always at loggerheads with his father, he was their only son.
"Say something please, this silence is killing me" he said.
"What do you want me to say Kai?"
"Anything, just let me know if you are angry happy please let me be part of what you're thinking"
"Okay" I said and kept away my magazine, he was not ready for that banter, "Do you think it's time I should get a car?"
From his reaction, Kai was still stuck in that conversation we had in the pool which means he was still feeling guilty and it was making me curious, what was that phone call about? And who was it from. He kept checking his phone all the way.
"Yeah, I mean that's what I've been talking about"
"Yes or no"
"Big yes, and I can take you car shopping, pay for it if allowed but before that, do you even know how to drive?"
"Nope, never got curious about it. Any suggestions to a good driving school?"
"I know one, hey look" there he went again, "about back there am really sorry if it makes you feel better it's not your fault it's just on me and I'll make it up to you tomorrow, movie night?"
"Fine, for the record am past that so move on and please be kind enough to put on some country music"
He obediently put on some country music and I went back to reading my paper. Silence graced the car again but at least this time we had resolved the little hiccup we had there and he was back to his normal self, smiling and shaking his head to the beat. Perhaps he didn't know this but spending time with him no matter how little was enough to take me through the day.
The Streets of ski city were decorated in yellow and blue to mark the veterans day, most of the people were dressed in the same colours walking in groups, others resting in the park, a band was playing a remix of national anthem and songs of national cohesion in the streets followed by a huge crowd of children and adults, it was fun to watch.
"Does this happen every year?" I asked my gaze fixed outside, Kai realized my interest and slowed down despite the speed limit allowing him to go faster.
"Yeah, it's beautiful to watch. Mostly I do watch it on TV. There's no such celebrations back in Hillwood?"
"No, there is I just didn't have a chance to see this"
"Tough upbringing?"
"The opposite actually, my parents treated me nice really they are just over protective. But that has changed, when I visited they released me"
"What do you mean by that?"
"They allowed me to be away from them you know the decision to stay here did not sit well with them, we kind of got in a fight with mum over it"
"You did that for me?" He asked turning around to face me, we were stuck in traffic at the ring road, my billboard was still there but sharing the spotlight with the Veterans Day billboard.
"You needed my help they didn't, besides they raised me to be compassionate it's not a big deal"
"It's a big deal, you literally paused your life for me"
"So far it's been worth it"
"Then why do I feel like I still have to do much?"
"Because you're an idiot...a handsome i***t who still believes nothing good comes from him"
"I'll take that as a compliment" He said picking up the pace, "In a perfect world do you think we'd be something"
Okay, did he just ask that? It came from nowhere and honestly got me so unprepared that my jaw just dropped and saliva almost leaked out of my wide open mouth. My brain ceased to function and for some time I couldn't comprehend where we were. Had he read my mind earlier?
"What?"
"It was a stupid question of course we're not good for each other right?"
"Yeah...yeah am like this stubborn annoying person and you..."
"Grumpy guy with no friends and am so terrible with people"
"We're a wild apart" I said amid shy weird chuckles, that was outside but in my head I was screaming "what the f**k are you saying this had been the opportunity you've been waiting for" yeah you can imagine.
"Exactly, that's why I said in a perfect world"
"We're better off as friends"
"I think so too. We're here" he announced branching in my apartment gate.
The guard opened the gates wide Kai drove in the parking lot and got the door for me. Carried my bags and handbag, following behind me.
Kai
"You shouldn't have sent Arthur on leave" she mocked.
All was well until we got at the reception. Ava was seated there with a magazine and when she saw us she came running, hugged Lynn and the two giggled like old friends. I felt so empty, a cold wind brushed across my growling belly. What on God's green earth was she doing there? Was it her putting pressure on me to break up with Lynn because if that was the case then it was working, I would have rather lost Lynn the hero's way, tell her it's over in the best possible way.
"What a surprise!" Lynn said giving me that "why the hell didn't you tell me she's around" Look. Guilty as charged though I should have reminded her that my fake cousin was around and she wanted me to get rid of her so we can get married and join our two families to fight against world dominion by a narcissistic vampire named Luca.
"Hi Kai, missed you. Sorry I didn't call something told me being a holiday I can find you here and I was almost leaving when you guys walked in am s..."
"It's okay, can we get in before we head home" I suggested. I was really regretting the day we visited Lynn, she played me big time but perhaps my stubborn nature and slow progress in telling off Lynn did not leave her much of a choice.
"Not that fast, this time am cooking us something"
Shit, Lynn again with her courtesy. What was she doing? The faraway Ava was from us the better too bad the only way to get her out of there was me going with her.
"I don't think that's a great idea" I tried to ruin her plans.
"Come on Kai, am sure mum and dad can wait for half an hour. Don't be too hard to bent" Ava said doing something with her eyes, I took it as Morse code to a warning. For the first time in my life I was caught in a web of blackmail and lies all because of a love triangle that I didn't see coming. Most of the things that happened to me in my life were mostly predictable but not that weird moment on a flight of stairs, everyone looking on surprised.
"Don't mind him. He is having a bad day, a call came in an hour ago that just knocked him off his mood" Lynn said leading the way.
Ava looked at me and smiled. She was really enjoying the torment and the great deal of discomfort she was causing me. When we got to her house we sat in the living room, sharing a couch with Ava against my will really. It felt so bad, Lynn went straight to the kitchen. I would have wanted to join her there were it not for Ava who was holding my hand, massaging it gently and dernly such that Lynn wouldn’t notice.
"So Ava, how have you been?"
"Fine girl, how about you? How did that visit go?"
"Well, my parents were really happy to see me"
"That's great, very great. Didn't they want to see Kai or you didn't tell them huh?" She asked squeezing my arm gently, as if that was not weird enough Lynn turned around to face us and we quickly broke off I pretended to be yawning and covered my mouth with both hands.
"They were...relax Kai, the bread sandwich is almost ready I can see you yawn" she said smiling sheepishly before turning back to cooking.
"Looks to me like fatigue and not hunger, what have you guys been up to?"
That was a perfect time, in a future dystopian world where machines rule humans, to switch Lynn off with a remote or put her to sleep mode.
"You know how romantic he is..."
"Is it hot in here or it's just me" I quickly did some damage control, Lynn was going to spill all the beans. We were supposed to be broken up not having untamed sweaty s*x in the middle of the ocean at night.
"Am sure the AC is on, are you sick Kai?"
"No"
"You were telling me..."
"Nothing much just a date out in the wild, you need a hand Lynn?" I asked interrupting again. It was my hope that she was going to give up that topic and just put her energy on something else.
"Yeah sure"
"Can I use the bathroom?" Ava asked.
I looked at her with suspicion and can you believe she send me a flying kiss and grinned. What was she up to?
"You asking? Come on go ahead it's not like this is your first time here, you're family"
"Thank you"
Two minutes after she was gone, every second of which my gut was telling me Ava was not up to any good, all of a sudden my iris glowed, my carnassial teeth sprouted, and I felt my claws come out too. Thank God she had asked me to prepare the dining table. Ava was using magic. She emerged almost immediately looking composed. Too bad I couldn't confront her right there, it was a risk to both of us.
"Welcome guys, enjoy this snack" Lynn said standing behind my seat.
"What about you?" Asked Ava concerned, she was enjoying the bread as if Lynn had the memo it was an all vegetarian meal.
"I'll take a quick shower and join you, this won’t take long you won't even notice am gone" She said and walked away.
"Be quick!" I shouted at her disappearing figure.
She poked her head out of her bedroom door and flashed a smile at me. For a minute Ava and I did not say anything to each other. I was dying to ask her about the magic.
"Go ahead, I know you felt it" she whispered.
"What..."
Before I could ask we heard Lynn scream in the bathroom. I glared at her and rushed to check on Lynn. The entire bathroom was filled with blood.
