Third Person POV
Liam was dragged over towards the stump. He pretended to stumble and trip, falling face-first on the grass. He heard his father's voice from behind him.
"I must have put more wolfsbane in the syringe than I thought" he muttered "Oh well" he sounded nonchalant.
The warriors picked Liam up with great difficulty and marched him to the stump. They knelt him there, with his face pressed against it, his eyes turned towards his father. His father looked towards the crowd. Liam made his body shake pretending it was fear. The crowd was silent, observing him, some of them looking as though they wished they could interfere, but knowing the consequences if they tried. All of them were grim-faced.
"We are gathered here today to witness the public execution of Liam Cross, my son" declared Alpha Johnathon, his voice carrying across the grounds and clearly heard by the crowd.
Some of the people in the crowd stiffened. Cordelia was standing there looking gleeful, a young man by her side, who looked to be about five years old who looked frightened. She held onto his hand tightly, preventing him from moving away. Liam wished she would let him go. This was nothing a child should ever have to see, let alone be brought to. She was a terrible mother, he thought to himself.
"My son is dangerous. He shifted at the age of twelve and turned into a hideous wolf, well past the size of what an Alpha wolf should be" shouted Alpha Johnathon "he will only bring harm and destruction to our pack. We must protect it from him and from anyone seeking to use him. It is my decree that he be executed today and be buried next to his dear departed mother who would be saddened at what a monster her son turned out to be. We cannot let him live. He will kill all of us if we do" he reiterated, the crowd looking skeptical. Some of them were even brave enough to shake their heads in disbelief, stopping when Alpha Johnathon glared at them.
Liam made himself look pathetic. He held up his hands, his skin bubbling and burning from the silver restraints. He made his eyes look beseeching. "Please" he gasped "Can't I die without these on?"
His father looked about to refuse. The crowd began to roar. "Take them off."
"You've already drugged him what's the harm?" they shouted.
"Give him some dignity."
"He deserves some respect."
"Set him free before he dies."
Alpha Johnathon rolled his eyes looking exasperated. He looked towards one of the pack warriors currently holding Liam down and strode towards them, handing them a key. They bent down and began to clumsily undo Liam's restraints. Liam almost couldn't believe how easy that had been, with the help of the pack of course. He gave them a glance of thankfulness. They had no idea of what they had just done, he thought with a sigh, but they had probably just saved his life and he owed them his thanks. He wouldn't forget this.
Be prepared to shift and I warn you, it's going to hurt growled Apollo sounding slightly apologetic.
Great, just what I need, more pain said Liam bitterly
We don't have a choice. You want to live, don't you?
I want to take my revenge hissed Liam
Then stop complaining already.
Alpha Johnathon smiled at his wife, his eyes twinkling. He gestured to the man with the axe, who strode forward reluctantly. "I would like you to proceed," he said loudly.
The crowd averted their eyes, the majority of them unable to bear facing what was about to happen right in front of them. The axe went high into the air. Liam could see it in the corner of his eye as it stayed mid-air, gleaming in the sunlight. He moved, just as the axe came swinging back down. Thud. The axe hit the middle of the stump. There were screams from the crowd, people believing it had hit Liam. Liam began to shift, his body cracking and adjusting, pain shooting through his body as he changed into his over large wolf form. Apollo was in his element, finally able to run and fight. He flexed his muscles.
"How" spluttered Alpha Johnathon unable to believe his eyes. He had given Liam enough wolfsbane to tranquilize an elephant. Cordelia gave a shriek and ran, Damon, clutched securely in her arms. She was terrified of the large black wolf that had materialized in front of her. As well she should be, thought Liam viciously.
"Get that wolf" screamed Alpha Johnathon, pointing at Liam's wolf as it began to race towards the forest, his own body changing as it shifted into its alpha wolf, which was much smaller than his sons. He began to run, trying desperately to catch up to Liam. He couldn't let his son live, he thought in desperation, what if Liam came back and took revenge for what he'd done to him? He felt dread in the pit of his stomach. After everything he'd done to his son, he knew Liam would want revenge.
Liam ran, letting Apollo take over his mind. Their paws thudded along the hard forest floor, easily leaping over fallen trees and over fallen debris. They ran up a cliffside and jumped to the other side, landing with a large thud, their body clearing it easily as the other wolves hesitated on the other side. He could see his father's wolf standing there, snarling, not daring to leap the huge gap as Liam had done. Even his wolf was not prepared to take the risk, mused Liam. Apollo turned and began to plod into the forest, breathing slightly heavily now. Liam felt concerned. This was not like Apollo at all.
Apollo, what's wrong?
It's the wolfsbane. There was enough to slightly affect me and because we haven't gone for runs, my stamina was not the best
We can take a break
I'd feel better if we put a big distance between us and your father's pack.
But we have to go back in order for me to get my revenge.
We will, but we have to be healthy in order to do that.
So where are we going?
I'm not sure, I'm going to wherever I'm drawn to commented Apollo as they continued to trot along.
They continued along the path and then Apollo's eyes narrowed. He seemed puzzled by something. Liam wasn't sure what he was looking at. They heard growling coming from behind them and shot a look over their shoulder. His father and the warriors must have found another way over. They weren't right behind them but they were coming their way. Apollo began to run again, darting every which way, zigzagging and splashing over streams. Suddenly Apollo gave a giant sniff, mesmerized by something entrancing.
I smell something incredible.
He began to follow it. They disappeared into a cave so cleverly hidden that it was almost invisible. Apollo put his nose to the ground and began to follow the smell. Liam was a little nervous. They were in a confined space and it wasn't exactly the best place to be fighting. But Apollo seemed unphased by it all. They disappeared around a corner and it looked like they reached a dead end. Liam was disappointed as was Apollo.
But the scent continued to draw them. Apollo pushed forward confused. Where was the smell drifting from? It felt like he was hitting a wall of some kind. He pressed his paw against it experimentally. A growl sounded behind him. He turned in time for a wolf to launch itself at him, tearing off a huge chunk of his shoulder and ripping open his midsection before he could move. His own father had attacked him. His father backed away, intending to attack him again and Apollo backed away, hitting the wall. Or where the wall should have been. To his surprise he continued to back away, blood dripping from him, a transparent wall appearing between him and his father's wolf. His father growled and ran forward, only to hit the wall and bounce forward. Liam blinked, feeling unsteady on his feet. Why couldn't his father get through? Apollo could smell the delicious scent again and was purring in his mind, despite all the pain he was feeling. Liam could feel the burning pain in their shoulder, their midsection feeling like it was on fire. He gave a low whimper of pain, staggering slightly on the forest floor, which seemed different somehow, more softer and lusher on his paws. He frowned, the trees were so vibrant and colorful. This seemed almost like a completely different forest from the one he'd been in minutes earlier. Maybe that delicious scent was flowers? Then he heard a voice that had him almost jumping out of his skin, soft and gentle and filled with awe, rather than fear "I can help you, you don't have to be afraid."
