CHAPTER 8

CHAPTER EIGHT As I walked in through the door after work, I fully expected an outlash and so I was not surprised when Mum began raining her rage on me.   “Look who is coming into the house right now after staying out all night and keeping her phone off,” she began, arms crossed and judging from the look on her face, my evening was about to get pretty sour.   “How have you been mum?” I said calmness resting on my face, even though I was shaking a bit on the inside. I had never spent a night outside our house, let alone skip town with my boyfriend. Roman briefly looked up from his phone where he was huddled up in the corner of the house, throwing me a sympathetic look.   “Peggy told me you got caught up in a group discussion with Blessing and at first, I believed her too. Then guess what happens when I walk into work first thing in the morning? That Beatrice woman just wouldn’t wait to gossip to everyone about how she saw you on Lucian’s bike in the morning, arriving in town like people who didn’t spend the night here,” she paused,” So, I’m going to be a good mother and give you a chance to deny all that on my face,”   Yeah, she was definitely mad and at this point, denying the truth would make it worse for me.   “Fine. Its true. I was out with my boyfriend and I just-“   “How many times have I told you I don’t like that boy? Now he is off dragging you to God knows where. You are breaking up with him right this minute,” she snapped. I knew she would be extremely crossed but this was the last thing I expected to hear her say. But then again, she had never been fond of Lucian from the very beginning.   “You don’t mean that, right?”   “Does this look like the expression of someone joking? You are losing track of who you are and that boy is right in the middle of it. So get that phone, call him and tell him its over between you two right now,” she pressed on, arms now uncrossed but her face more serious than I’ve ever seen.   “Lucian is my mate, Mum. I get that you don’t understand what we have because you are not like us but the least you can do is accept that Lucian is and will always be a permanent part of my life. He is my mate, someone I would kill for,” I was getting agitated by the minute. Just what was so hard about seeing beyond her perception of Lucian and actually letting herself see what I see in him?   “I don’t care if he is your mate or whatever and you are actually right. I do not understand any part of this supernatural world but I’m human enough to know that boy is bad luck in your life. He’ll hurt you so bad and there won’t be coming back from it,”   “Lucian would never hurt me, mum. You don’t know him like I do!” I snapped, getting angrier.   For a full second she looked at me with a blank look before slowly muttering her sentence,” You are grounded until I say you are not. So hand over all your electronics including your phone right now. From school, you’ll go training and to the library then back home. I do happen to have Chen’s number and so I’ll make sure you won’t be meeting that boy,”   “What? You can’t be serious,” I muttered in disbelief.   She stretched her open palm,” Your phone, now,”   Still stuck in disbelief, I reached into my back pocket, retrieving my phone only for a call to come through from the most unexpected person.   “Its Ian. Can I pick it first?” I showed the screen after a second of hesitation, she just walked away. Why the hell was Ian calling me?   “This is a surprise,” I started.   “I didn’t think I would be calling you either. I was just…um checking up on you. How are you doing?” He called to check up on me? Why were people determined to surprise me today?   “Yeah, I’m fine. How about you?”   “Just getting by. So um…do you happen to be free this weekend? Sunday is my birthday and um…I was just wondering if you would keep me company even if its for a few minutes,”   “Shoot! I can’t. we are having a friends camping trip. I’m so sorry,” I said.   “Oh! Um…its cool,” he immediately hung up. I felt sorry for him because at this point I wouldn’t want all my friends to abandon me and have me spend my birthday alone.
