"Good judgment comes from experience, and experience comes from bad judgment." ~ Rita Mae Brown Chapter Nine Elio sat at his desk in his office downtown his head held in his hands as he tried to not stress over the amount of paper work that was piled up on his desk. It's been nearly a month since he had last seen Davina and almost a month and half since he found out about her pregnancy and he would be lying if he said he didn't feel guilt. He cares for Davina still and wanted to keep her in his life still but if Petra found out that he had an affair their whole marriage and ended up getting his mistress pregnant she would make sure that his life was a living hell, plus now that Petra was pregnant with their first child he couldn't ruin their image in the media, he would definitely lose business deals and his family's company would plummet to the ground all because he couldn't keep it in his pants. Elio didn't want to be married to Petra and even now he still had his moments when he wished he wasn't married to her but there wasn't anything he could do about the marriage he's tried almost everything thing he could think of before and after he was married to Petra but there was no way out of the business deal that his father and Petra's father created when they merged their companies not even in a divorce. He admits continuing his relationship with Davina was incredibly wrong of him but he was in love with the girl and didn't want to end things just because his father decided that he wanted to merge companies with some Russian family. He loves Davina and would never in a million years hurt her yet he suddenly has. Not only with the marriage and with affair, but by also degrading her and telling her that she wasn't going to get an ounce of support from him with their child. Does Elio regret his decision? Yes and no. Yes, because he misses the opportunity of raising his child with the woman he's in love with and no, because he's giving his child the chance to live a live without a shitty excuse of a father and Davina gets the chance to find a man who will be able to shout his love for her to the public and not keep her hidden. Davina and their child deserve happiness and that's something that he can't give them. "Sir, your wife is coming upstairs should I tell her that you're in a meeting?" Sarah, Elio's secretary says speaking over the phone. "No, it's fine just send her in." Elio runs his hands through his hair not caring if he messed it up and put the files back in his drawer so Petra didn't see them and yell at him for being lazy. A couple minutes later Petra is walking through the doors carrying a target bag and her free hand holding a Starbucks coffee cup. "Elio, you haven't been answering my calls what's going on?" Petra asked throwing the target bag down onto one of the leather chairs as she sits down in the one next to it. "Oh, my phone must have died," he lied. In fact, his phone was fully charged he just didn't feel like talking to anybody. Petra doesn't say anything as she grabs her purse grabbing a thin piece of paper before reaching over the space between them. She drops the paper down on his desk making Elio look down at the small business card that was in front of him. "My appointment is tomorrow and we're finding out the gender you're still coming right?" Elio sighs before nodding his head. "Wouldn't miss it for the world," Petra smiles standing up from the chair with a grin on her face. Elio waits until she leaves before covering his face with his hands. ༺═──────────────═༻ Elio watched from a distance, a soft frown on his face as he watched Davina browsed the baby clothes in front of her. Her stomach was still flat, he could barely see if she was forming a bump or not but of course she was wearing black so her body appeared more slimmer. She had picked up a pack of three unisex onesies a soft smile forming on her face as she looks at the elephant and giraffe printed onesies. It was a surprise to Elio when he walked into mall later that day and saw Davina in a baby store near the store he always got his suits tailored at, he didn't want to believe it at first when he saw her and almost walked right pass her but when he took a double take and it dawned onto him that it was indeed Davina he couldn't help but watch. He knows he promised to stay away a month ago and technically he still was keeping that promise but just because he made that promise it didn't mean he couldn't make sure she was okay from a distance. Besides his mother always told him that sometimes it was better to love someone from a distance. Davina places the onesies back onto the shelf before looking at the other options that the store had to offer. Elio watched as she walked around the store his eyes noticing the way she would sometimes place one of her hands on her flat stomach, something he's never seen Petra do unless they were around people. Shaking his head he looks away from the store and down at his wrist watch. Fifteen minutes have passed and he was already late to dinner with Petra's family but if Elio was being honest he didn't want to go to some lousy dinner with Petra's family, her father was a cruel man who always talked about his woman on the side who he went to visit more than he sat down and visited his wife and daughter. Elio felt bad for Petra's mother and daughter but he couldn't help but feel like a hypocrite when he had Davina on the side.. key word, had. Upon entering the dry cleaners, the old man Jay, the owner of the company smiles at Elio clapping his hands as he walks from behind the counter. "Elio! How are you lad? Haven't seen you since the charity auction two months ago," Elio smiled hugging the old man, his tall figure hovering over him a good foot an a half. "Hey Jay, I've been good just busy. How about you? How's the grandkids and wife?" Jay shakes his head with a laugh as he shoves his hands in his pocket, his grey mustache twitching as smiles. "They're all good just driving me crazy. How's your wife, I saw she's pregnant." Elio forces a smile as he nods his head. "Yeah, I'm not sure what we're having but we'll see." "Are you excited? Having a baby is a huge step in a marriage," Before Elio could respond to Jay's comment the bell above the door rings alerting of a new customer. Jay looks behind Elio's shoulder a smile appearing on his face as he takes in the new customer. "Ah, Mr. Rogers what brings you in today?" As Jay leaves Elio's side to assist Mr. Rogers, Elio throws down a hundred dollar bill onto the counter and hooks his fingers under the hangers that were holding his suits and gave the old man a salute as he made his way out of the shop. As Elio as walked out of the shop and towards his car, he whistled a soft tune that he always whistled when he was bored. Whistling the tune, it brought a smile to Elio's face as Davina's face flashes across his face. Whenever he would whistle this tune around her she would laugh and comment how he sounded like a little bird, he loved when she would tease him, it was something Petra never did and if he's being honest he sort of missed it. Davina definitely was the light in Elio's life and now that light doesn't exist. At the sound of laughter, Elio looks up his heart dropping to the pit of his stomach as he takes in the sight in front of him. His heart felt like millions of needles were stabbing into it at once as he watched Davina in the distance laugh at something a tall man no older than she was said. Jealousy coursed through Elio but he couldn't do anything. She wasn't his anymore. So Elio did what he always did best. He walked away. ༺═──────────────═༻
