What Is He?

Dave stared at her in shock which was soon replaced by anger. With a huff, he reached over to grab the cup beside her table but had his hands knocked away by Davina. "I came to see it on my table. You came after me, so it's likely not to be you." Davina explained after feeling his shock. Dave nodded and instantly thought of Jonas. He had no idea why but whenever he thought of the fact the man was trying to get closer to Davina his heart would tighten. "Yeah, can you explain the ranking stuff?" Davina asked, recalling the reason for the small fight earlier. "Ranks are from 1 to 10. At the moment, we have only two people ranked 7: Jonas and Isabella. Jonas' father, ranks 8 and that's the highest. Everyone on this floor is ranked 1, then other floors have rank 2 to 6 mixed within them." The man explained. "What kind of power do rank 7 and 8 have?" Davina asked again. "They have the power to suspend someone. They also have the power to stop mission allocation to certain persons.". "So they don't get to revoke someone's rank?" "Only rank 9 and 10 have that power. However, rank 7 and 8 can apply to Rank 9 and 10 to get some people out of the station with tangible reasons." The man replied. Davina tilted her head to the side and muttered an 'oh'. "So what should we do whenever we come across our seniors?" "Give them the respect they deserve." "Do we get to fight with them on any occasion?" Davina asked, recalling the situation on ground. "Yeah." Dave nodded. "And yeah, when such a thing happens, and the junior wins, he or she would be given the rank of whomever he fought with." "Does that person lose his rank? And what happens if the junior loses?" "For the first answer, no. And for the second, there's always a chance to do some tasks finger promoted every year. So if the junior loses, not only will he or she get vanished from those yearly tasks for two years so he or she will remain in rank 1 while the rest upgrade, no mission will be allocated to them, and he'd be placed at the front desk as a receptionist." "That's horrible." Davina frowned. Dave leaned back on his seat waiting for her to ask a very vital question but was disappointed when he looked at her to see her seriously reading a paper. "Did you perhaps have any problem with the man running the station at the moment?" Davina sighed as she threw the paper at him. Dave grasped and skimmed through it. His face turned pale at the sight of the content. "W-what is this?" "More assignments." Davina replied, lowering her head onto the desk. "More assignments? They have no idea we almost died last night, do they?!" The man yelled out. The surrounding people instinctively turned to take a look at them. Dave waved his hand at them and faced Davina. With a low voice, he complained as he pointed at the paper which was additional information on the death of another family. "We have to tell them. There's now way I'm going back there!" Davina didn't raise her head but she replied. "Are you ready to have your badge, uniform and your passion taken away from you?" "What do you mean by that?" The man frowned. "I challenged them, remember? If we back out now, our lives will be filled with ridicule. The higher ups might even revoke our work IDs." Davina explained. Heartbroken, Dave slumped back on his chair. The day quickly ended. Just like Tabitha said, she appeared right in front of Davina the moment she tried taking a taxi. Davina furrowed her brows upon seeing the latter. "You kept to your word." "These days, I hardly go back on my words." Tabitha replied cheerfully. As the duo chatted happily, they missed the charming Caucasian man who walked past them in a police uniform. Almost immediately, Davina glanced at where the man had walked and sniffed the air lightly. Noticing her wandering gaze, Tabitha asked. "What's that?" "Nothing, just felt like I smelt a cat." "Look around you, there are stray cats around. Be less ridiculous." Tabitha laughed. Davina's eyes scanned the road and sure enough, she spotted some stray cats, just like Tabitha said. "Yeah, probably nothing." She nodded. Tabitha started the car with a smile, but Davina failed to notice her eyes went in a certain direction with a frown. After their car was out of sight, the Caucasian man walked out of his hideout whilst stretching. The injuries from his fight with Tabitha had healed. His mind flashed back to the night before. Not only had Tabitha beaten him to a pulp, but she was really determined to kill him. Her strength shocked him and he had to resort to a spell to escape from her clutch. "For the meantime, don't you think you should avoid Davina? News reaching me says she'll be staying at Tabitha's place for some days." Gerrit, the man's cat, said. He too wasn't left out as he had to make his presence known when his master was almost killed. "I know. I just feel frightful whenever I think of that guy I had seen with her." The man replied. "When I said you should avoid Davina, I never said you should attack the man with her. Unless you're ready to die before your time." Gerrit snorted. "By the way, you're still too weak. Imagine getting beaten by a Vampire!" Gerrit taunted. "Hey! We both know she isn't a simple one." The man snorted. Their discussion came to a halt seeing a family of four walking towards them. The man instantly stuck out his tongue and swiped it across his dry lips. ..... Dave returned to his house to see his father reading a newspaper in the sitting room as usual. "Good evening, dad." He greeted and made to walk upstairs when the man called him back. Seeing the faint line of blood trucking down the side of his head, the man panicked. "What happened to you?" Dave was surprised. "Nothing. Do I look like I got into a fight?" The man panicked at the sound of that and instantly got up. "Did you take your drug this morning?" "Yeah, I did." Dave replied. A thought suddenly occurred to the man and he waved Dave aside. "You can go take a shower." Dave nodded and rushed up. Meanwhile, the man who seemed to be in his late fifties and head full of white hair, frowned. He tossed the newspaper aside and got up. He walked straight up to his bedroom and sat on his bed. "Come in." There was silence for a few seconds before the curtain blew open and a figure flew in and knelt before him. "What has been happening?" The man asked coldly. "Nothing much. Jonas and Isabella are back and a new person was transferred to the station." The other man replied. "New person? Male or female?" The older man asked again. "Female, she's a werewolf too." The older man said nothing for almost a minute before he shook his head and got up. "What else happened?" The man on the floor was a little startled before he said again. "Dave was paired with the new recruit to work on a case concerning a murder." "Murder case." The older man muttered, brushing his fingers past his lips slightly. "A family of four who were wiped out in one night?" "Yes. They had gone to the house of the family an hour later, I saw Dave run out of the house while talking to himself." "Did you get a glimpse of what happened afterward?" The older man asked hopefully. "By the time I went in, his partner already made her way out. When I walked in, there was nothing peculiar about the scene but I did catch the smell of cats." The older man waved him aside. "I've been reading the news, so I'm aware of that." Just as he was about to ask something else, there was a knock on the door. Because he was so engrossed in his discussion, the older man failed to pay attention to the sound of footsteps he had been hearing. "Dad, are you in?" Dave's voice came from outside. The older man said nothing in reply to him but instead turned to the man on the floor. "I'll send for you later." Obediently, the man got up and exited out of the house through the window. The older man strolled towards the door and pulled it open,m afterwards. "I made pancakes for dinner." Dave said and the man nodded. Gently, he closed the door as though scared of waking up someone. "Is the food better this time?" The older man asked as they walked into the dinning. The corners of Dave's mouth twitched. He was terrible at cooking but because his father had forgotten to stuff back the kitchen and he had also forgotten, they were both sentenced to eating his poison. "Let's hope it's not." He smiled and picked up his fork. However, the moment the food came in contact with their tongues, they spat it out at the same time.
