Angel, I'm Blood Thirsty

“If you cannot do your job, then say so!” that was Lucifer. His composure was too refined, it didn’t match the rage in his tone of voice. He stood with all the angels who shook their heads and scoffed at Halo. “It was a baby—” “It is a blood-sucking monster!” “It’s still a baby,” very defeated, Halo tried her last attempts at defending herself for sneaking the baby out of the slaughter field. The angels were disappointed at Halo for saving yet another vampire from termination. These were the 5 leaders of the Vampire Annihilation Force (VAF). The task force was very large with many underlings stationed at different regions. “Argh!” Lucifer was furious, “That’s it!” He lost his composure; he couldn’t stand Halo’s outlook at the vampire situation. “These vampires have gone rogue. Look around you! On the planet… there’s more vampires now than there are humans. The existence of vampires was always agreed to be kept a secret but now, all humans hide in fear of them. They are wild, corrupted—” “Exactly,” Halo cried back, “they are corrupted. Corrupted by someone or something. Someone must have done this to them. They weren’t always like thi—” “Oh, Halo… You’re too old to be this naïve. You have been serving this heaven for 5 000 years now. How are you still this dumb?” Halo always had her friend, Aga, stand up for her. “Lucifer, hold your tongue!” Aga protested, “This is the court of heavens, dare you not insult another colleague. You’re not only disrespecting Angel Halo, but you’re also showing no regards for the rest of us. Is this how you intend on talking to us at a point where we disagree with you?!” For many years, prior to what the situation has turned to now, the vampires and the humans lived well and in peace with another. It did help that they fitted in well with the human population—they were able to keep their identities hidden. They were carefully governed by strict laws and among those laws, they couldn’t turn humans to vampires at random. Their population was strictly monitored to never pass a certain threshold. Now there were too many of them. They threw away all the laws and turned violent and rampant. They were killing and sometimes turning the humans in large volumes. It was out of control. “I am just saying,” Halo continued, “there was once a time when the humans lived well with the vampires. They weren’t always like this. In fact, they protected the planet and often, brought order and justice upon the world. Their services were always appreciated. And then suddenly, just 3 000 years ago it all changed. They started turning on us and on the humans. What changed? Surely, there’s something wrong… It’s very rare for one to simply just turn on you or an agreement they made like that. Maybe, they’ve been trying to communicate something with us, and we weren’t listening. I don’t know… just maybe. There has to be something we’re missing.” The court only had the 5 leaders of VAF. They had just come from vacuuming the earth off of vampires. During this mission, Halo had angered all of them when she saved yet another vampire. It is said that she always did that. Upon every mission they would come back to the court to berate her and try to ‘fix her’. But Halo was always so adamant on saving the ‘good’ vampires. The court was adjourned especially when the angels started voting to get Halo thrown out of the VAF. Halo was given a timeline of an hourglass to appeal to each of the leaders to keep her in the force. ……………………………………… She had already spoken to the others. She didn’t seem too confident afterwards. She walked in shrugged, into Angel Aga’s lair. She dragged her feet and joined her at the fountain. “Any luck?” Aga welcomed Halo. “Did you manage to change at least one of their minds? Then we would be at a tie?” “What’s the point of getting a tie?” Halo was depressingly sitting at Aga’s feet. “They’ve been wanting me out of the force for many years. This might just be their chance to finally throw me out. They have all my records of disrupting every mission we ever had.” Aga was always so majestic and graceful. She often had the ability to empathise with her colleagues. She always sided with those least favoured. This time it was Halo, the least favoured. Aga always understood that Halo may have been the strongest member of the force but she never really had the will to fight. Often, when bullied, Halo wouldn’t try to defend herself, she would simply just distance herself. Halo was not confrontational and that was why she appreciated having someone like Aga on her side. “I am on your side. I obviously vote that you stay, but you still need one more angel. Lucifer already has 3, himself included, on his side. If you could just approach those other two on his side and turn just one of them, we would hit a tie. Then this matter would be taken to God. God adores you; it is no hidden secret. God would let you stay and Lucifer will never try to throw you out ever again. However, Halo had already tried the other 2 angels and she failed at gaining their votes. It was pointless to even approach Lucifer—he was the one who wanted her gone the most. “Lucifer—he always wanted you gone.” Aga had been caressing Halo’s hair as she sat by the feet. “Lucifer is jealous of you…” “No, I wouldn’t think so… He’s just trying to do his job. I mean, I’m not an idiot, the situation has turned vile on earth and I can see that. The best way to stop this is to erase all vampires…” “Halo… Lucifer is jealous of you. He is threatened by your power. You are the strongest angel there is. He envies what you have. You’ve only come to life 5 000 years ago, look how much you’ve achieved. There’s talks that you may sit at the right side of God. Lucifer has always wanted that. He always believed that he was God’s very favourite until you came along. You threaten all that he is.” However, Halo would not heed the warning. She believed that Lucifer was only doing his job passionately. Time was up. Halo had to face her verdict. The decision was taken, “We have been reviewing all your records. And it appears that since the beginning of the missions you’ve been sabotaging the force—” “It was never sabotage, Lucifer! I only wanted to save those with good intentions. There are still vampires with good hearts.” The court had a few more angels to witness the prosecution of Angel Halo. It was a word passed around that Halo—the strongest and newest Angel—would be degraded from her position in the VAF. The court was indeed full. Halo stood defending herself to garner favour from the witnesses, maybe they might be the ones to stand up for her. “There are no vampires with good hearts! They suck blood for lunch!” “It is a chain of life! A food chain. There are animals on earth that feed on other animals, in case you’ve forgotten that. Sucking on blood doesn’t make them necessarily bad. They were once heroes and protectors of the people.” Halo was clearly gaining empathy from the witnesses. Lucifer could see that and he did not like that. “They never asked to be vampires—” “But they are clearly enjoying being vampires—” “Because they are corrupted!” There was a gasp in the crowd. They were all wondering what Halo was implying by ‘corrupted’. “…they are lost. Something is wrong. Don’t you all see?” There was such a silence. She had created a suspense in the atmosphere. They were all curious on what Halo was to say. Hopefully, her very next words would expose was actually going on, on earth. It had always been strange to all of them how things had drastically turned so vile on earth. “Someone is doing this. Something must be corrupting their minds.” “Are you implying that their actions are not their own? Are implying that someone somewhere has gotten into the minds of millions of vampires across the world and misdirects them all at once? Is it your intention to strip away all ownership of their actions from them? You don’t want them to face the consequences of their own misdeeds. You would rather stand here and make up some fairy tale about invisible forces controlling their minds.” Lucifer could not let Halo spread the conspiracy of some unproven theory. It would cause commotion and unrest in the heaven. He knew now more than ever that he had to get rid of Halo for once and for all. He had been stepping towards her methodically that entire time and now he stood towering above her. “Have you not seen the savagery they are capable of? Do you even care for the precious life on that planet? Have you forgotten our endearing promise to love and protect that life? Why are you so hung up on protecting those vampires instead? Do you love them so much?” Halo now found herself standing by the cliff of the heaven. She didn’t know how she got there but it was clear that Lucifer teleported all of the court there. They would all get to see Lucifer administer a punishment to an Angel. “Well, it doesn’t matter the undying loyalty you’ve vowed to them. The forum has already decided to throw you out of the force.” Lucifer concluded, “Angel Halo, we banish you from the VAF. In fact, you are banished from heaven. Go to that vampire pavilion and see for yourself who they truly are!” And just like that Lucifer pushed the Angel over. Halo fell through the clouds. She tried pulling out her wings to flap herself up but she felt shackles wrapped around her. Almost like she was being kept from flying herself up. She fell into the earth and broke the mountain bringing across a short earthquake. “Let’s see if you will still love them then…”
