I drained the bourbon as a loud bang on the door came thundering through the castle, which echoed all around us.
I ignored it, but I could hear footsteps and the door opening.
“Welcome,” said Freddie as he closed the door behind them.
I heard footsteps coming toward where we were all sitting.
I glanced over as Freddie walked in with Elder Matteo and Elder Cain.
I groaned.
Matteo, whom I have known for thirty years, can be a complete tool when he wants to be. When he became one of the Elders, he let it go to his head.
I didn’t know who the other one was; he seemed new.
Matteo stopped and looked at me. His eyes searched my face, trying to figure out what I had been up to or possibly to figure out what he could say to get my back up.
