  By the time Broderick wrapped everything up, the clock had already hit midnight.   His usually calm, icy gaze was now shadowed by a hint of redness around the eyes.   As he reached his bedroom door, he paused without realizing it.   Back then, every time he opened the door, there'd always be some unexpected "surprise" waiting for him.
