Are you sure about this?” Brianna asked as Marisol started to the banks of the river. She had kicked off her slides and took off the shall around her shoulders. “It’s f*****g cold right now love,” Brianna said reminding Marisol of the bitterly cold December winter they were in.
With ice dripping from trees and everything frozen, Brianna was sure the water was like ice.
But Marisol wasn’t afraid of the cold as the water hit her toes. Most people would immediately balk as what felt like instant frostbite splashed over her feet.
But instead, her mind seemed to instantly become at peace as she whispered, “I don’t mind it.” And then she was treading into the water with a numb mind. And when she was submerged to her neck, she turned and saw Brianna watching worriedly clutching her shawl. And the half-smile Marisol gave her, didn’t seem to be comforting as she almost immediately submerged after.
Falling below the icy water, Marisol felt her body slowly adjust as pleasure ran through her. The water that would feel like little pinpricks of torture on someone else’s skin, glided over hers. Caressing her as she seemed to fall in the silky ribbons of blue.
Closing her eyes, Marisol felt a gentle presence in front of her. Bright and pure and when she felt her senses become conquered by it, she didn’t fight it.
Taken to another plane, Marisol sat soaking wet in the shadow end of a lake. At the feet of a beautiful woman in front of her, Marisol looked up at the mother spirit of water. “Diosa Anna of Rio de la Vida.” She breathed out.
The woman in front of her was Latina as well, and when she faced Marisol, it was with strength and passion. “My daughter, finally.”
Kneeling, the powerful woman helped Marisol to her feet. And she glanced around amazed she was still in New York. But in a different time, a simpler time. And it was so beautiful surrounded by lush floral and innocent energy.
“Marisol Gonzalez, you’ve finally awakened.” Holding Marisol’s face in her hands, the unnatural blue eyes peered into her brown. “So beautiful and powerful, you are everything your *madre wished for. (*Mother).” Marisol began to cry as the goddess spirit began to comfort her, “There, there, you’ve been so strong now. And you must be even stronger to continue on. Or you’ll meet the same fate as your parents, and I could not bear to suffer that loss again.”
Patting Marisol’s head as she hiccupped, Diosa Anna admitted thickly, “Eran gente hermosa, se merecían algo mejor. (*They were beautiful people, they deserved better.)” Meeting the unnatural blue eyes, Marisol pleaded to know, “What happened to them? Truly?”
Unsure if she should burden the young girl with such grief, Diosa Anna had no choice but to answer when Marisol desperately asked, “Please. They knew they were going to die or they wouldn’t have been prepared. I need to know who killed them.”
And with a wave of her hand, Diosa Anna showed Marisol images in the water, “When the witch’s of your coven was prophesized, it caused an uproar. You four were shown to be the start to the end of the demons who plague this world. Your magics together will activate other witches of all types. Bringing the magic back.”
Sighing sadly, Diosa Anna’s images of the four births became disoriented, “But demons of all races and power feared and loathed the possibility of being overthrown. They sent killers and demons after you all.”
Seeing her grandparents being mauled by some kind of demonic bear, caused Marisol to cry out in pain. But that wasn’t all. Diosa Anna pulled the memory away gently placing a hand on Marisol’s back.
“Your parents thought they could hide you. Shield you until you were of age, but someone hunted them down for a demon lord. And he set fire to their home when they refused to give up your location.” Crying watching her home be destroyed, Marisol whispered, “Why does he want me?”
Diosa Anna predicted, “I believed at first he wanted to kill you. But now I think he wishes to just simply convert you. Have your magic and power align with his.”
Marisol swallowed hard as an image of a handsome man appeared in front of her. Older by a decade, he was Latino with black eyes and pink lips, he looked like a normal guy. But his eyes were cold, and the smile he bore with those sexy pink lips was cruel.
Trembling in fear, Marisol whispered, “He’s going to come for me.”
Diosa Anna nodded in agreement at the wise deduction, “He will. And when he does, I want you to have the power and tools to be able to defeat him.” Marisol sniffled as she met the goddess's eyes in fear, “And if I can’t?”
The wind seemed to blow a mystical mist over the water as Diosa Anna gravely informed her, “Then you will be conquered by him. And your daughter, will surely not be spared. She will be poisoned, your magics polluted with his evil.”
And like that, the goddess awakened the mama wolf in Marisol who immediately stood straight with fierce determination. “What do I need to do?”
Holding out a hand over the river, a weapon formed in the water and floated to Marisol. Picking up the battle axe, Marisol admired it in awe. “A battle axe for the young warrior in front of me, along with this.” With a wave of her hand, a flower appeared in her hand and as water began to incase it, it hardened into a jewel.
Fastening it on Marisol’s charm bracelet, Diosa Anna told her, “To keep your aura safe from him until you’re fully trained. After then, you are on your own.” Nodding Marisol stood tall as she held up the axe, “One last thing…”
Ten seconds later, Marisol’s head was popping up and a soaking Brianna stood with a crying Tamia. Jeremy was also waterlogged as Aurora kept trying to get into the water. Coming out of the water like a Mexican Samara from The Rings, Marisol spit out water. Looking up casually, Marisol accepted her daughter who held on to her grinning.
“Hey, my precious girl.” Kissing her head, Marisol looked at a trembling Brianna whose skin was heating up naturally. Smoke emitting from her body as if she’d just taken a dive in a hot bath. “What’s wrong?” Brianna looked Marisol over shocked as Tamia whispered, “You were in there for so long!”
Confused since it had only felt like ten minutes, Marisol asked, “How long?”
Brianna answered cautiously as she admitted, “An entire hour. And you never came up for air, we tried to go in, but it was like the water rejected us.” Not shocked but a little amazed by that, Marisol admitted, “Personal best to be honest. I’ve never been able to go past twenty minutes. But it makes sense now, I’m a bruja, a witch of healing. An elemental witch of water.”
Making a noise of shock as his own skin steamed, Jeremy pointed to her weapon, “Nice blade.” Marisol held it up, “I know right? So dope.”
And it was, with its beautiful design. The turquoise blue double-sided blade resembled rippled Bahama waters. The sigil of Diosa Anna was in the middle embossed in black steel. The handle in Marisol’s hand had a pattern of more of the turquoise blue metal, and then a brown handle that she gripped easily.
Walking out of the water, even though wet in the middle of winter, she felt no chill. Instead, she faced the water again yearning to go back in. “Did you figure out what you need to do?” Brianna asked as she too stood perfectly comfortably in her now dry clothes.
“Yeah,” Holding the blade up to the late evening sun, Marisol concentrated on the lake before her, “*Congelar! (*Freeze).” Thrusting the blade out, Marisol felt the power rush through her. And they all watched the lake freeze over amazed as she panted on a high. Aurora squealed amazed patting Marisol’s cheeks amazed, “ 'Ow Mama! 'Ow!”
Marisol grinned at her daughter’s happy face, “I know bebe! Wow right? I’ll teach you when you get bigger.” Turning to face the others, she watched the concerned mambo approach her, “What’s going on Marisol? What do you know?”
Inhaling deeply, Marisol stated brashly, “That my parents died trying to save me from a demon trying to absorb my power when I was a kid. He burned them alive for not telling him where I was. Cruel punishment for a water witch, using our strongest competitor in element against us. Fire.”
Looking at her daughter, Marisol told them about Diosa Anna and everything said. “So, you have to…?” Tamia whispered. And Marisol nodded, “I have to kill Gabriel Ramirez because when he finds me, he’ll try to kill me. Or worse, covert me to be in his ranks. And then, he’ll try to do the same to Aurora.”
Brianna breathed out and looked at her brother who c****d a cocky eyebrow, “Like we’d let that happen,” Grinning, Tamia winked at Marisol who was in near tears now, “Time to kick another dude’s ass who thinks he’s the s**t? Bring it.”
Brightening up as if she knew what was being said, Aurora cheered, “Me, me, me!” Laughing, Brianna teased, “Well then baby’s on board, so am I.” And like that, the coven bonded at that moment with its newest member. Her heart completely opening to them as they prepared to face a great evil.
