CHAPTER 28

The door couldn't hold it, so the winds scattered in. A fragile flowerpot by the doorway couldn't hold it's place, swayed gently in the wind and shattered with a deafening sound. A stiffling silence fell over the hall. Luke frowned slightly upon noticing her state. The impatience wore off ever so slightly as he asked, "Ivy, is everything alright?" Jaxon caught on immediately. He stood up so fast that Emma's hand on his arm fell off like a broken leaf. The slight pain on her palm showed in the form of easy tears. "What happened -" "How dare you." Ivy's gaze stayed fixed on Emma. "I let you use me, hurt me, do whatever you want with me. I thought it was enough to satisfy you. So how dare you raise your filthy hands towards her." Something dangerous was boiling under those dead, dark pupils. Even at a safe distance away from those eyes, Emma felt it burn her skin and an undeniable urge to flee gripped her chest in a tight hold. Even without clear words, Emma knew exactly what Ivy was talking about. Her fear materialized into sobs. She shook her head, denying it with everything she had. "I-I didn't - " Her words caught and she immediately changed them. "What do you mean? I don't understand! You're scaring me, Ivy!" Luke subconsciously shield her behind his back while staring at Ivy with a mix of confusion, accusations and a hint of worry. But he didn't know how to say it so he simply stared, hoping she'd know better than to create a mess in front of their father and Jaxon. But his thoughts had nothing to do with reality. Alpha Victor was already on his feet. His towering height overshadowed the gloomy presence Ivy brought in the house. "Ivy, don't cross the line you shouldn't." Alpha Victor warned. His commanding tone only added to the thick tension on their shoulders. "I was always within my boundaries. It was Emma who crossed them first. She kept pushing my bottom line. I deserve to have my justice." "Justice?" Alpha Victor snorted as if he heard a joke. "Even if Emma did wrong you, it's not your place to ask for justice. She's my daughter, the young mistress of the Reed family. Who are you to ask for her to atone for anything? Don't you dare forget your place Ivy. I raised you, but you are no blood of mine. I have no obligation towards you. You're someone living under my roof and eating the left over morsels on my generosity. Do not forget that. Stay in your place." It was the first time in months that Alpha Victor had spoken more than a handful of words to Ivy, and every single one of them had been meant to remind her of her place. That whatever came her way, she had to endure in the name of being just a worthless existence. That she'd been alive at his mercy. Everything, including the clothes on her body were his charity. However, Ivy couldn't bring herself to care. She didn't care what they saw her as. Consequences were the last thing on her mind. All she knew was that Emma had taken something precious from her and this time Ivy couldn't afford to forgive her. If she knelt today, she would never be able to stand again. Ivy knew her place wasn't next to them anymore, but it most definitely wasn't under Emma's feet. That was something she couldn't accept even if death stared her in the eye. "What's going on?" "Mom," Emma said, her voice shaking. "I'm sorry. I must have done something that made her angry. I don't know what I did but I'll apologise... Ivy please don't make a scene. Grandma just passed not long ago, how can you ..." Luna Doris immediately forgot that she was about to confront Ivy and rushed to Emma's side. She pulled the sobbing girl into her arms as if shielding her from a beast. "What are you saying, darling?" Luna of the silver mane pack looked up with red eyes. "You have nothing to apologise for." For some odd reason, Ivy recalled Luna Doris' gentle gaze from last night. When she had given Ivy that plat of food, for a split moment it felt like she had been in a bubble of delusion. That delusion shattered completely. Ivy realised that Luna Doris' love was real. It was a simple love one would have for a house plant or a pet they had raised for almost two decades. Luna Doris had a big heart. It could fit a lot of love at once and similarly she had the capacity to give out just as much to others. It wasn't difficult to love Ivy, but if the Goddess were to one day ask her to chose, she would most definitely not chose Ivy. When Ivy realised that, her heart found a small anchor to settle down on. She'd not be swayed even by the tears that at one point in time made her heart bleed. If the Alpha and Luna didn't care to give her justice, then she wouldn't ask again. She'd take it, either by coercion or force. "You are right." Ivy nodded indifferently. "Emma doesn't have to apologise." Luna Doris' expression eased slightly. It didn't take long for her to losen her hold on Emma and smile lightly, as she stood up and approached Ivy. "Then why did you make such a fuss? Is it fun to scare us like this? Sit down and talk if you are upset. Y'all are not kids anymore." Luna Doris scolded lightly and sighed in relief. Emma wasn't prepared for Ivy to give up so easily. By now she had realised that Ivy must have found out about Grandma but she was confident in her tricks and the hold she had on the Reed family. No matter what Ivy put forward, none of them would acknowledge it and the one to lose would have to be Ivy.
