CHAPTER 31

"Guards!" Alpha Victor's growl shook the ground. The maids scattered away from the scene as hidden guards jumped out of their spaces and surrounded them in the courtyard. One of the guards stepped forward. His head was lowered in a respectful bow. "Your orders, Alpha." Ivy let her gaze stray away from Luke's to Alpha Victor's. The Alpha's hate filled eyes stared unblinkingly, as if he wanted to strip her skin and burn her at a stake for hurting his daughter. "Take this waste and throw her into the Cells!" He ordered the guards. "Wait!" Luke exclaimed and ran to stop the guard making his way towards Ivy. He turned to his father with an unsettled frown. "Why are you locking her up? She can be punished in other ways! She just challenged Emma, which is allowed, not murder someone." "You'd better stay out of this one, Luke." Jaxon warned under his breath. Ivy felt his fleeting gaze pause on her before it lifted away. Luke was pulled off the guard by Jaxon. The head guard called Caleb brought a pair of silver cuffs meant for heinous criminals. "I'm sorry, miss." Caleb muttered so low Ivy thought she heard wrong. The silver cuffs landed on her wrists with a strong sizzle. The smell of burning flesh lifted in the air and floated towards the Reed family. Luke took a stubborn step towards Ivy but his arm was grabbed, rooting him to the spot. He glared back at his friend. "Not the time, Luke." Jaxon took a deep breath and nearly gagged when Ivy's sweet scent tainted with blood and flesh entered his lungs. "I can't -" Luke began to argue but the words he prepared got stuck when the doctor arrived at the scene. The doctor did a quick check and asked for her to be taken inside. Alpha Victor carried her limp figure effortlessly. Luna Doris was right behind him. "Make sure Emma is fine before you go to see Ivy at the cell." Jaxon said, each word grinded with restraint as he pulled Luke along. "Alpha Victor is pissed right now. You will only anger him more if you bring up releasing her." "What the hell is going on? Why would Ivy do something so awful?" Luke asked in a whisper. "You're asking me?" Jaxon scoffed. Their conversation died. Neither had an answer to it except Ivy and she made it a point that she wouldn't spill it. He put it at the back of his mind for a while. At least until Emma woke up. On the other hand, Ivy sat in her dim cell which smelled of pungent human waste and chemicals. She leaned against the cold wall facing the silver coated bars, her knees lifted to support her hands. The restricted air flow created a humid environment, causing her injury to burn more than it originally did. The weight on her mind was lesser than it was at the coffee shop but her gaze remained as vacant as a cloudless sky. "Any form of communication with other inmates is prohibited. Don't try to break out, the cell walls have silver embedded in them. Two meals will be delivered at fixed times everyday. There is a small button next to the bed for emergencies." Caleb listed everything that the inmates needed to know. He knelt down next to a small opening in a corner and pushed in a neatly wrapped package. "It has spare clothes and a blanket. It's the only one you'll receive during your stay, so use them carefully." Caleb said, paused and lowered his voice to a small whisper, "Alpha doesn't mean any harm. He is just angry at the moment. You will be out by tomorrow once he gets over it." His gentle reminder carried the warmth from Ivy's childhood. Caleb used to be a low ranked soldier when Ivy was ten. He used to make Luke and Ivy train for two hours each day. Although they didn't spend a long time with Caleb because they were assigned to a senior trainor at the age of twelve, the two years Ivy trained with him had hardened the basics into her bones. In a way, Ivy was able to win against her only because she never forgot some of the underhanded tricks taught by Caleb. "Thanks." She whispered back. Her listeless voice echoed between the four damp walls. Caleb sighed heavily, shaking his head as he left. His heavy boots echoed on his way out. For a long time it was the only sound falling on her ears. Eventually, that ended too. The prison cell was quiet as a dried up well. Ivy picked herself up and flopped on the hard mattress. The damp smell and questionable stains did nothing to elevate her tiredness. She laid face down on the mattress as her body melted into it. The fist gripping her chest into a tight bundle seemed to loosen up gradually in the cold silence. Unlike Caleb, she knew that Alpha Victor wasn't going to change his mind. Unless there were unexpected factors involved, Ivy was going to suffer. Ivy didn't expect anyone to help beg for her either. She could simply treat is as a cruel extention of her stay in the palace. With that thought in mind, Ivy curled up on the mattress and descended into the land of nightmares. The concept of day and night barely existed in the cells beneath the Silver Mane Pack. Ivy had no idea how long she had been asleep. Her mind felt heavy, wrapped in a fog that dulled her thoughts. When she finally opened her eyes, darkness greeted her from every direction. For a moment, she simply stared ahead, struggling to separate reality from the haze lingering in her head. Then realisation dawned. She was in the pack prison. Alpha Victor had ordered her confinement after the challenge. The realization settled quietly in her chest. Surprisingly, it brought neither anger nor panic. She simply accepted it and let her head fall back against the wall.
