The silence at the table was deafening. Mystic wasn’t happy. She silently stared at her, making her feel like she was making a mistake when she agreed to Vicker’s offer to go and find her mate. But she felt this might be the quickest way to do it. The vampire was there when Larson’s pack was attacked after all. If anyone could find him it was him, she thought as she shoved food into her mouth.
“Stop looking at her like that, she knows what she’s doing. Vicker won’t hurt her. We should be glad he’s doing this. At least this way we won’t have to wait for too long. Marcus and William might have been able to find him it would have taken too long,” Kalan said to Mystic. Her sister shook her head, and pushed to her feet. Mae closed her eyes for a second before she followed her out of the great hall. Mystic made her way to her baby’s room. Mae walked inside to find her staring down at the sleeping baby. She wanted to have a life like this, surrounded by love and raising her own baby. She dreamt about it since she was a child.
“Are you sure this is the best way to do this?” Mystic asked as she came to stand behind her. Mae bit the inside of her mouth. She wasn’t sure whether it was the best thing to do, because of what happened between them. It made her nervous that she was going to be alone with him for however long, but she wanted to do this. She didn’t want sit back and let others go out there without her doing anything. He was her mate, she had to go and find him herself.
“No. But he was there before. He’ll remember the way,” she said.
Mystic turned and faced her. “I don’t trust him.”
“I know. I don’t either. But like Kalan said. He won’t hurt me.”
“I am not afraid of him hurting you. I’m afraid he’ll…” Mystic trailed off. Mae blushed looking away. She wrapped her arms around her and held her close. “I don't want him to be your mate. He’s not good for you.”
Mae smiled, liking the feeling that worked through her at Mystic’s words. She liked her sister’s protective side. “I know he’s not good for me. Nothing is going to happen. He’s only going to help me that’s all.”
“And I don’t understand why he doing it.”
“Maybe he’s trying to make up for his past,” Mae shrugged. She pulled away from her sister and leaned into the cot. She kissed her nephew cheek. Warmth filled her, as his baby scent drifted around her. “I’ll be back soon. Don’t trouble your mom, okay. I’m already stressing her out.”
“You’re not stressing me out. I love you too much to see you being hurt. I want you to be happy, that’s all.”
“I know. And I will be once I find Larson,” Mae said with a smile. She touched her chest as love surged inside. She couldn’t wait to see him. “I’m going to get ready. We’re leaving just after sunset.”
“Okay,” Mystic said. She walked out of the room, and made her way to her room. She hasn’t seen Vicker since last night. She wondered where he was. He was probably in the basement since the sun was out. Mae walked to the closet and packed a few clothes. She hoped they found him soon. She didn’t want to spend too much time alone with the vampire. A shiver went through her as she remembered the moment she woke up in his arms. She shook her head, and walked out of the room. She went to the garden and walked around just to keep herself busy.
“Fancy meeting you here,” Jade said. Mae turned around to face him. He smiled, clearly happy to see her, and then his smile dropped. “I heard you were leaving…with the demon from hell. Why?” he asked sounding horrified.
“I need to go and find my mate,” Mae said. Jade took her hand and walked her to the bench. He sat her down and gave her a look.
“You don’t have to go with him though. I don’t like the thought of you out there with him…all alone,” he said.
“You sound like my sister,” Mae said.
“I like her. She has some sense,” he said, taking her hand. “I don’t understand why you would go with him. Aren’t you afraid?”
Mae stared at him searching herself. And the truth was…she wasn’t afraid of him from a physical sense. She knew he wouldn’t hurt her. Not the way they thought he would. Everything was complicated between them. “No. He wouldn’t hurt me. He didn’t hurt me even when he was out of his mind.”
“But I thought you were afraid of him.”
“I am, but it’s not…” Mae shook her head. She didn’t know how to explain it to him.
“Tell me something.” Jade squeezed her hands. “How did he…? He claims you’re his bride. How did he claim you?”
“Uhhh that…” Mae said getting to his feet. “It just happened.”
“How?”
Mae didn’t want to talk about that. She wanted to leave the past where it belonged, in the past. She was looking for her mate, and that's where she wanted to focus her energy.
“I need to go,” she said getting to her feet. Jade let her go. And she walked out of the garden.
The sky was turning dark when Mae walked out of the house to the waiting SUV. She dropped her bag in the back, and got into the car. Vicker walked out a few minutes later with his brother. He was dressed all in black, and he looked well rested. His red eyes shone with a focused intent as he stared at her through the tinted window. A shiver down her spine.
“Maybe I should go with you,” he said.
“No. I have everything under control.”
“Do you?” Cassia gave her a look and pulled his brother. “I don’t think you do or you wouldn’t be doing this. No male would give up his mate like you are about to. This is so unlike you.”
“Maybe it’s time for me to change.” Vicker took hold of his shoulders. “I’m going to be fine. Don’t worry about me,” he said and then rounded the car. He got into the driver’s seat and they drove off. Mae took a deep breath as they passed through the barrier. They were alone now, she thought feeling his overwhelming presence all around her. He has always been larger than life to her. She glanced at him in the darkness of the car. His large hands lightly grasped the steering wheel. He didn’t look as tense as he was when they were in the house. He was far more relaxed, and …sane. The vampire she remembered was nothing but sane.
Mae ignored the nervous energy swirling inside her.
“Where are we going?” she asked as they turned onto the main road. Vicker turned, and stared at her for a few seconds.
“Cassia and I tried to remember where his pack could be, but we couldn’t. Since you don’t remember any distinctive features of the area, it’s really hard to know which one it was. The elders tried to take over a lot of packs over the years. So we’re going to start from the one I remember, maybe that could be the one. We’ll drive during the night and rest during the day.”
Mae nodded. It sounded like a good plan. She faced ahead, and imagined meeting Larson all over again.
“You really want to find him, don’t you?” Vicker asked. His voice sounded strained as if that was the last thing he wanted to say.
“Yes,” Mae said, feeling uncomfortable. She didn’t like talking to him about Larson. She might not acknowledge Vicker as anything to her, but they did share something. Although it might have been twisted – she wanted to avenge her mate and he was…unstable and needed something to bring him comfort, it happened none the less.
“After you tried to kill me, and the elders took you from me, why didn’t you go back to him? I’m sure you still remembered something back then,” he asked taking her by surprise. She didn't think he would bring the fact that she wanted to kill her up, especially because he didn't bring it up, when they met again.
She wasn't going to focus on it either. Mae focused on his question.
Why didn’t she go to him? Did she? Mae frowned and tried to remember what happened after Fluvia took her away. She couldn’t remember. Everything was a blur until she saw Mason while she lay on the ground broken. She clutched her head as she suddenly saw spots behind her eyelids. She moaned.
“Mae? Baby, look at me.” The car came to a sudden stop and she felt his arms come around her. “Shhhh…don’t try too hard to remember. We’ll find him. I promise.” He pulled back and softly touched her cheek. Tingles ran over her skin, sending a pulsing sensation down her body. She pulled away from him as her p***y throbbed.
She put as much space between them as she could, and leaned against the passenger door. She could feel the vampire’s eyes on her for a full minute before he drove down the road again.
Why can’t I remember? Mae asked herself.
And why wasn’t he there? Why hasn’t he come for me?
She closed her eyes, feeling a terrible ache start in her heart. Where was he? She asked herself. All kinds of emotions swirled in her heart – abandonment, fear and confusion. She held Larson’s face in her mind. His sweet smile, blond hair and handsome face. He wouldn’t abandon me, she thought with conviction. She touched the mating mark on her shoulder that was proof that he wouldn’t abandon her. Tears filled her eyes. But she pushed them away. There has to be an explanation of what happened. Mae held on to that.
The hum of the car, lulled her into fitful sleep. Snippets from her past ran through her mind, mostly they were about her and the vampire – the long nights they spend in his room after they removed him from that room where he bit her, and fed from her. He didn’t want to let her go after that. He brought her back to his room – he fought anyone who tried to take her away from him. The whole thing was barbaric and scary. But Mae didn’t expect anything less from him. He made his way to the en suit bathroom and stripped her naked. He washed her entire body, touching her in places no one has ever touched. She moaned.
“Shhh,” came a voice next to her ear. “Go back to sleep.”
Mae opened her eyes and stared at side of his neck. He was carrying her. He strong arms were wrapped around her, holding her tightly against his chest. His scent surrounded her. He always smelled strong and lethal. That was weird. No one smelled like that. But he did.
“This way,” someone said ahead of them. A door opened and he walked through what looked to be a bedroom. The sound of shutters closing filled the silence. Mae was so familiar with the sound it made her heart skip a beat as she thought of the vampire nest.
He gently placed her on the bed. Brilliant red eyes stared down at her.
“The sun is rising. We’re going to rest here,” he said. He moved away from her. He pulled off her shoes, and then walked away from the bed. She heard him walk around the room. A few seconds later, he returned to the bed and lay next to her, a tiny space between them.
Mae held her breath, but he didn’t move closer. She bit her bottom lip feeling strange, because for the first time since they’ve been together. He didn’t touch her.
