Jaxton – The Silver Wolf

André shifted into his large brown and gray wolf. Lexia couldn’t shift just yet, so she would ride on me and André. I shifted; Nox was eager to come out. I hadn’t let him out in a long while because I couldn’t risk anyone seeing him. André and Lexia gasped, and I knew that I would have some explaining to do once we were able to stop. Nox nudged Lexia to get onto our back. She shook her head to dispel the shock that she was in and climbed up. Nox yipped, and then we took off running as though our lives depended on it, which in a way, our lives did depend on our speed. I was surprised that André was able to keep up.      We ran till well after midnight; our pursuers had long given up. I wasn’t too certain if Luna Amanda would put a bounty on our heads so we decided that our best bet would be to stay out of towns and cities and stick to the trees and nature as much as we could. We found a small cave along the Texas side of the Red River where we could hide for the night. André and I decided to stay in our wolf forms as wolves were warmer than humans. We laid down in such a manner so that both of us were facing out, and my sister snuggled up next to me, running her hand through our fur.     “It’s so soft,” she murmured sleepily. Nox purred. I didn’t even know wolves could purr. Her breathing evened out, and I knew she was asleep. André pulled a blanket out of a bag I hadn't even realized that he was carrying, and draped it over her. She snuggled in further to my side as she feel into a deep sleep.     'My whole life I had always dreamed of meeting her and to think that I was so blinded by my bigotry towards Omegas that I almost let her slip away,' André whispered in my head through our mind link. It was almost as if he feared that even mind linking too loud would wake her up.     'Why do you dislike Omegas so much?' I asked, curious.     'Years ago, three Omegas turned traitor and because of that, my mate and children were killed. And like a fool, I assumed that all Omegas were of the same ilk as the traitors. So when Luna Amanda ordered me to be your escort, I was...well, less than thrilled,' he replied.     'What changed your mind?' I asked, although I was fairly certain that I knew the answer.     'The first day I was assigned to you, and Mikhail and I smelled blood. You showed us your arms and legs. There was no wound, but your explanation didn't quite add up to the amount of blood that we smelled. Mikhail seemed to accept it, but I was less convinced. Then every time you disappeared to be with your sister, I would follow, and shortly after you went in her room, the smell of blood would get very strong for a few moments, then it would fade. And every time, you came out without a mark. As I told you yesterday, your sister's supposed clumsiness couldn't always explain away the strong smell. Yesterday morning just before we talked, I remembered what some of the ancient Praestes chronicles wrote about Aegeus. He had the same healing ability that you did. I didn't know exactly what you were doing to your sister, but I realized that it had something to do with your blood. And I was able to put it together that you were him. Now my turn for questions,' he said. I nodded. 'I don't remember Aegeus's wolf being silver; I think it was more brown and gray. Do you have any idea what that means?'     'Not a clue. The first time I shifted and saw Nox's fur, I was just as surprised as you,' I replied. We both fell quiet contemplating what had been said. I felt myself beginning to doze off when I heard a rustle in the undergrowth, and Nox started growling low and menacingly. André and his wolf, Claude, also became alert listening to the noises outside our little cave.     A large black wolf appeared in front of the mouth of the cave, and I knew without really looking that we had somehow wandered into a pack's territory. "Come out now!" A deep voice commanded. I looked at  André, and he nodded. This would not be a good time to fight. I nudged Lexia who came awake instantly. I saw how she winced when she stood up, and frowned. The healing my blood had given her should have worked longer. Lexia took hold of my fur in one hand and her cane in the other, and then the three of us left the cave.     We came out slowly, and I could see several wolves guarding the perimeter. I also caught the scent of gunpowder, and was fairly sure there were snipers trained on the three of us. I heard several gasps go through the other wolves as I stood under the moonlight. I was certain that they had never seen a wolf with silver fur. The Alpha commanded us to shift which André and I immediately complied. I hadn't been shot, but I was sure that it was uncomfortable and would probably hurt like hell, even with my super healing. Lexia hid her face since we were naked. The Alpha laughed at her blush, but allowed us to put on some clothes.     "I apologize, Alpha, I did not realize that we were on another pack's territory. I didn't feel the pack border that is traditionally associated with a new border," I said calmly after I had put on my clothes.     "Tell me, Silver Wolf, why you do not smell like a rogue, but nor do you smell like a pack either," he said with arrogance, although I caught a glint of dangerous steel in his eyes.     "I was being abused in my old pack, and I feared that they would soon turn their abuses to my sister. As you can see, she is disabled, and my old pack dislikes those that are different from them," I cautiously replied. I would have to tread very carefully with this pack.     "Where are you headed?"     "I don't know exactly. We were told to head towards a pack with a Luna that has purple and silver hair."     "Ah. That would be Luna Tessa, of the Blackwood pack. For the time being, I will offer you the hospitality of the Red River pack. I am Alpha Darion Mosley. Come we will go to the pack house, feed you, and let you get some rest." He turned his back to me and started walking away.      I felt my heart drop into my feet. This couldn't be happening. Of all the packs that we could have found ourselves in, the Red River pack was the absolute worst option. 'Well, SHIT!' I heard in my head. I nodded. I already knew this was bad. I didn't need André confirming it. Alpha Mosley had a reputation as one of the most dangerous Alphas in the US. I guess I should consider us lucky. He could have already killed us. I sent a quick prayer to the moon goddess to watch over us as we trekked behind the Alpha. Lexia trembled beside me, and without thinking, I scooped her up in my arms. I think that the only reason we were still alive was because of the silver fur of my wolf. I said another prayer as we followed Alpha Mosley.
