As we approached the pack house, I could tell that the Red River pack was better off than Night Sky. The pack house stood two stories tall, and was well lit as we approached. The guards and patrols were alert and attentive, and I watched them as much as they watched me. They gave me an uneasy feeling and a shiver ran through me as we passed them and entered the pack house. The Luna greeted us, but there was definitive coldness in her greeting, and I noticed that she did not give her name. Neither the Alpha nor the Luna gave us time to take in the pack house as we were led down a hallway to our rooms. Lexia let out a small yelp as one of the guards took her arm and attempted to lead her away from me.
I growled, low and menacingly, and the guard immediately dropped her arm. Alpha Mosley appeared shocked at the wolf's reaction as Lexia rushed back to my side and buried her face in my shirt. "I would appreciate it if my sister could stay with me. As I said before, we've not exactly had the best life in our previous pack, and we are both wary of strangers," I said as I rubbed Lexia's back to calm her down. I saw a glint of anger in Alpha Mosley's eyes before he nodded curtly. The Luna opened the door to our room, and we were quickly ushered in. I heard the distinctive sound of the lock being turned effectively locking us in the room.
'The room is probably being monitored. Don't say anything out loud about our plans other than what they already know. Alpha Mosley is dangerous, and I don't want to be on his bad side any more than we already are,' I warned via mind link to both André and Lexia. They both nodded in understanding. Our situation had gone from bad to decidedly worse, and we didn't need to exacerbate anything. Lexia was the first to go to the restroom to shower and change. I noticed that she was limping and her face contorted as though she were in pain. I frowned, remembering that she had winced in pain when Alpha Mosley first found us. Unfortunately, I knew I would not be able to give her any more of my blood for as long as we were in Red River territory.
André and I quickly took our turns in the bathroom. I took what was probably the second shortest shower in my life. I didn't want Alpha Mosley to get any ideas about separating the three of us. I could tell my paranoia was rubbing off on the other two as neither of them showed any signs of being tired or sleepy. I finished towel drying my hair, and then plopped on the bed. Lexia squealed as she bounced up. We all just kind of dissolved into a fit of giggles.
"I heard them lock us in. What happens now?" Lexia asked as we sobered up.
"I'm not really sure chipmunk. I think we're going to have to play this by ear. I got the distinct impression that Alpha Mosley is not going to let us go easily," I replied. "For now, let's just get some rest, and deal with it in the morning." They both nodded. There were, thankfully, extra blankets and pillows in our room. Lexia, of course, got the bed, while André and I made pallets on the floor. This was definitely a step up from sleeping in the cave.
André was the first to fall asleep followed soon after by my sister. I listened to their steady breathing while I laid awake. Just as I was beginning to drift off, I heard a door open somewhere in my room, which was decidedly odd since I hadn't heard the lock click on the main door. I opened my eyes to see a young woman just inside the door. I studied her for a moment. She had long black hair and the most amazing blue eyes. I thought I could detect a hint of the scent of cinnamon, but quickly discarded that as I would not be granted a mate for another 4 years at the earliest. Her eyes met mine, but she quickly signaled me to be quiet. She turned back to the door, and then motioned for me to follow. I was leery of anything happening in Alpha Mosley's house, but at the same time, my curiosity was peaked. I silently padded after her.
We were in what appeared to be a servant's hallway. I briefly wondered if the Alpha knew this hallway existed. "I know who you are. I know you are my mate, even though you don't feel the mate bond." I felt my eyes go wide and my heart rate speed up. She continued before I could panic further. "I had a dream about you, and Selene, herself, told me you were coming and she told me what you were. Every wolf in this damn pack smells like pine. Your friend smells like fresh cut grass, and your sister smells like an ocean breeze, but you...you smell like rain on a warm spring night. That's my favorite scent in the whole world."
"So what is your plan?" I asked, cautiously. "I won't feel the mate bond to my potential mate until my sister is of age. I will understand if you don't want to wait." Nox and I were fully prepared for the pain of the rejection. We couldn't and wouldn't ask anyone to wait for us to feel a bond that wouldn't develop for another 4 years.
"My plan is to help you get out of here, and then go with you. I will wait for you," she said with confidence. I sighed. I just hope she wasn't setting herself up for failure.
"How do we get out of here?" I asked instead of voicing my doubts.
"This whole pack house is riddled with these hallways. The Luna says that she doesn't want to ever see an Omega walking the same hallways as her. So Alpha Mosley had them built and then promptly forgot all about them. The question is going to be how do get beyond the borders before we are caught?" She replied, surprising me.
"For now, I think we do nothing. If we try to leave, he will be expecting it. I think that we will need to hold for now," I said, thinking out loud. She nodded. "As much as I hate to say this, you need to avoid us. Take your cues from the rest of the pack. Don't come here unless you absolutely need to. We don't want to draw attention to ourselves." She nodded again. She leaned forward and gave me a quick hug. I felt a tiny jolt as our skin made contact. I almost yelped in surprise but managed to keep myself quiet. She was telling the truth. She really was my mate. I couldn't believe it.
"My name is Zephyra," she said as we broke apart.
"Jaxton, but everyone calls me Jax," I replied. She leaned and gave me a quick kiss on my cheek and then she was gone. I went back to the room I was sharing with André and my sister. They were both still sleeping soundly. I laid back down on my pallet with even more on my mind. I didn't know if I was going to get any sleep. Just as I was beginning to feel restless, I felt a gentle touch in the middle of my forehead. The scent of honeysuckle filled the room, and both my sister and André smiled in their sleep. I realized that we had just been touched by Selene. I smiled as I fell asleep, confident that whatever else happened, Selene was watching over us, even if it was only for the moment.
