I woke with a start. I couldn't remember the last time I had slept so well or so peacefully. It took me a moment to recall the events from the night before. I glanced over at my sister, and she was curled on her side sleeping peacefully. I turned to look at André and saw that the big man was still asleep. I spent a few moments comparing us. I was taller than him, but by only a few inches. But he had me beat in bulkiness. Where I was lean, almost stick figure-ish, he was built more like a truck. The man could fight, though, and I knew I wouldn't ever want to cross him. His bulk hid his speed and agility. I was thankful that he was on my side.
"Jax, are you awake?" I heard Lexia whisper softly. I turned back to her to see her brown eyes gazing intently at me. I stifled a smile at her bed head hair. André began stirring, and then he sat up with a grunt. "I had another dream last night," she continued once André signaled that he was awake.
"Another one?" I asked. She nodded. "Tell me."
"I saw a terrible battle. There were wolves and vampires and descended and some other creatures that I couldn't tell what they were. Some were fighting, and many others lay dead or wounded. I saw the Luna with the purple hair standing in the middle of it all. She was badly hurt. Jax, I think she was dying." She wrapped her arms around herself trying to hold her fears away while reliving that nightmare . I jumped up and scooped her up in my arms, rubbing circles on her back. "It was horrible, Jax. I don't want the pretty Luna to get hurt. I don't want her to die," she sobbed into my shirt as she clung to me.
I sat there with her in my lap for a few minutes while she calmed down. There was a harsh knock on the door, and I exchanged a dark look with André. He got up and answered the door, and I made sure that Lexia had stopped her crying. André opened the door as two Omegas and the Alpha walked in. Once the Omegas placed the trays of food in front of us, they quickly left. The Alpha sat himself on one of the chairs, leaving the three of us to figure out our seating. By unspoken agreement, André and I let Lexia sit on the other chair and he and I sat on the floor.
"I would like to get to know a bit about you before I allow you to remain on my lands," he said, without preamble.
"My name is Jaxton, and my sister is Lexia. Our parents vanished just about 2 months after she was born. I couldn't tell you if they are alive or not. We were classified as Omegas. My sister relies on a cane to get around and she can't work for long periods of time without becoming exhausted. So I took on any responsibilities that she may have been assigned as well as worked my own chores," I said cautiously. I didn't want to name the pack that we were from in case they had put out word. I didn't think Luna Amanda would care that we were gone, but at the same time, I didn't want them to come looking for us either.
The Alpha turned to André, "And what about you? You are definitely not Omega material."
"André is my name. I owe Jaxton my life. A few weeks ago rogues attacked our pack, but they had rifles that fired silver bullets. As a warrior, I was, of course, on the front lines. However, during the battle, I was shot multiple times. Jaxton found me and tended to my wounds until help could come," the big man lied. I hid my surprise at how blithely the lie flowed from his mouth. "A few days ago I heard rumors that the Luna was going to send the girl to an orphanage since it is doubtful she has a wolf, and when Jaxton told me he was going to run away with her, I followed, in hopes to repay the blood debt that I owe," he continued. The Alpha nodded, seemingly to accept the big man's words.
The Alpha trained his eyes on my sister, but she hid her face in my shirt. "I apologize, Alpha. She is very shy and doesn't trust others." He scowled, and I could tell that he did not like being defied. Before he could push the issue, I continued, "Please understand Alpha. I've heard rumors and stories about how you treat your Omegas." He raised an eyebrow, but indicated that I was to continue. "Your Omegas are properly fed and clothed. You make sure that they are taken care of, even though they are Omegas. But my sister and I...well, let's just say that wasn't how we were treated. There were many days when I would go without food, and would often have to resort to stealing scraps and leftovers just to make sure that she had something to eat."
"I'm guessing that you will not give the name of your old pack willingly?" He asked. I was surprised because that was not a question I had been expecting from him.
I chose my next words carefully. "I do not wish to speak ill of them any more than what I've already said. Overall, they were not a bad pack. My sister and I were just unfortunate to be a part of it. I do not wish to be separated from my sister, nor will I allow her to be put in an orphanage, wolf or no. That's why I felt that running away was our only solution."
"I see. What skills do you have?"
"I can cook. Of course, I can do other things, but I enjoy cooking and I'm actually kind of good at it," I answered glad that I didn't have to be careful with what I said.
"I can tutor the younger wolves," Lexia surprised everyone with her whisper.
"I am a warrior," André offered.
The Alpha nodded to each of us. "So, you, big man will report to the training field and meet with my Beta so he can place you appropriately. Jaxton, you will report to the kitchen. I will allow you to prepare lunch, and if you're as good as you say, then you will be the cook. As for you little one, you will find the nursery and help with the younglings until I find something else for you to do. After you have completed your initiations, I would like you to report to the pack Infirmary and see Dr. Julius so he can check you over and make sure that you're healthy enough to do the work I've assigned you." With that, the Alpha showed himself out. I heaved a sigh. This was not going according to plan.
