I woke up feeling fully refreshed. I couldn't remember the last time I had felt this good. 'Hey, Nox. You awake, buddy,' I thought at my wolf counterpart. He yipped and growled. I turned inwards, and felt the biggest grin of my life flash across my face. He was prancing around like he was a pup, instead of the full grown wolf he was. I couldn't help myself and began to play with him. I don't know how long we played before I felt myself being shaken and Lexia's concerned voice pulling me out of my headspace.
"Oh goddess, Jax, I thought something happened to you again," Lexia said as she wrapped her arms around my neck.
"I'm fine, Lex. Truly. I've honestly never felt better," I replied, semi-breathlessly. I hadn't realized playing with Nox like that would have physical affects. Lexia pulled away and looked at me. I guess she was trying to determine if I was trying to tell the truth. I heard the door open, and Alpha Mosley walked in followed by Dr. Henkle. "Good morning, Alpha, Doctor."
Alpha Mosley looked me up and down, and I saw a small smile playing at his lips. "I see you must be feeling much better. You have more color in your face," he rumbled as I submitted to an exam by Dr. Henkle. Dr. Henkle must have been happy with what he found because as soon as he was done with me, he practically ran out of the room. "So young man, what was all this fuss over you all about?"
S**T! S**T! S**T! I panicked. Alpha Mosley had seen my original wolf form, and he would know something had happened the moment I shifted. But at the same time I couldn't tell him that Selene had touched me because I was some reincarnated wolf guardian. I didn't want to lie to him as I knew lies were so uneasily undone. 'Jax! I need you to take a deep breath," Nox commanded before I could have a full blown panic attack in front of the Alpha. 'Ok, now that you're calmer. Think about this. He probably already knows that Selene touched you. You said that out loud last night, and we're fairly certain this dude's got the room bugged or monitored or whatever, right?' I nodded internally. 'So throw him of his game. He's expecting a lie or at least an omission. That means tell him the truth.' I heaved a sigh of relief. Nox was right.
"Truth is Alpha Mosley, when all of this started, Selene had called me to the Moon Garden. We talked for a bit, and then before she sent me back here, she touched my forehead. The next morning I was in so much pain I couldn't function. And you know the rest," I said calmly. I saw his eyes widen. Nox was right; he was expecting that I would attempt to lie to him. I glanced at Lexia and André to see their eyes widen in shock as well.
"Hmm, I see," the Alpha replied. The four of sat there in silence for a few minutes. I could see the wheels turning in his head. I wondered if he was going to ask any more questions, but he decided against it. "You will rest today and tomorrow. You are free to walk around the territory, but I strongly suggest you do not stray too close to the border. In two days' time, you will meet me at dawn on the training grounds. As for you two," he turned my sister and friend, "I will also give you two days. And then I expect you to return to your duties. The three of you have been gone long enough." With that, he got up and left the room.
"Well, that was unexpected." I could hear the amusement in André's voice. I couldn't blame him. From everything that I had heard of Alpha Mosley, patience was far from it.
The two days of rest passed quickly and uneventfully. André and I made our way down to the training field. We made sure to be quiet as Lexia was still asleep. Nox was back to yipping and playing, which had me smiling. I stopped short once we entered the training arena. Once again, Night Sky's training grounds could hardly compare to the vast arena that was Red River's training grounds. André patted me sympathetically on the back. He had already seen the grounds so he was not as impressed as I was. Of course, I hadn't had much chance to see the training grounds at Night Sky so I didn't have much basis for comparison. Alpha Mosley called me over to him while André left to go join Mykel.
"So tell me Jaxton, what kind of training have you had?" He asked as I approached.
I stopped in front of him, and shrugged my shoulders. "I wasn't allowed to do much other than clean and cook."
"Hmm, that's not necessarily a bad idea. That just means that you are a clean slate and do not have to unlearn any bad habits. So the first thing I am going to test you on is your speed, in both human and wolf form. You will run from here to that pole," he motions with his arm to the other end of the training field to a large orange pole, "and back. Now get ready."
I did as I was told and got in position to run. I heard him yell "GO" and took off. Before I could really blink or process what had just happened, I was back in front of him. I didn't even remember reaching the pole. Nox was shocked as well, but it was his turn to run. We shifted and got in position and ran again when he yelled go. The second time we came back to the Alpha, he had a distinct look of surprise. A look that Nox and I shared. We had never run that fast, not even the night we escaped from Night Sky.
Alpha Mosley put us through a whole barrage of tests. Each one seemed to have him and Nox and I in a constant state of surprise. 'Dude, I didn't know we could do all this,' Nox said at one point. 'Me neither,' I replied. After a few hours and the point where Nox and I finally started feeling tired, Alpha Mosley finally called it quits. He didn't say much as he stalked out of the arena. I couldn't tell if he was happy or mad. Before I could ponder over his actions in detail, a young wolf came up to me and reminded me that I had kitchen duty. We made our way back to my dream kitchen and got to work. I didn't go all out like I had for my first meal, but still managed to make a well rounded meal. After lunch was over, the kitchen Omegas came in to clean up. That was one thing that hadn't changed. I was still doing the cooking alone, but I hadn't minded. I was able to get in the right frame of mind being by myself without worrying about tripping over anyone or anything getting spilled or broken. I was just about to wonder what to do with myself, when the same young wolf from earlier informed me that the Alpha wanted to see me in his office.
"Come in," I heard his deep voice rumble as I approached the door. He motioned for me to sit on the dark brown leather sofa. "You, Jaxton, are an enigma. I've run more experienced wolves throught that gamut, and watched as they collapsed not even halfway through. The only other wolves I've seen that could even come close to what you did out there were Alphas such as myself, and the Blackwood Twins. Are you sure you don't have Alpha blood?" He asked as he twirled his glass of what looked like whiskey in his hand.
"I couldn't say, sir. I was only 4 when they disappeared. I don't even remember what they look like. Every once in a while, I get flashes of what are probably memories, and see a woman with short, pink hair and green eyes. I think my father had brown eyes, but I don't know. I don't even know if they were part of a pack or were rogues." He seemed shocked by how nonchalant I was talking about the people who may or may not have been my parents.
"I would like you to remain as my kitchen cook, but I also want you to train with Mykel. I will set up a schedule for you. You are dismissed."
With that I left his office. I had more questions than answers. Why had I been so good at so many of those tests? Most of them I had never done before, and there were a few that I hadn't even heard of. Nox and I had certainly given our all to those tests, but we hadn't even felt winded till the very end. Nox even commented that he felt different. I stopped short. 'OH HOLY HELL!' I yelled.
Nox rolled his eyes. 'Dude, I'm right here. There's no need to shout.'
'No, I just figured it out. Why we were so good at those tests. Selene herself told us that when we woke up, we would find ourselves changed. This is what she meant. I don't think we could have done any of that stuff beforehand.'
'OH. So that's what she meant.' I rolled my eyes so hard at Nox I was afraid that they would have gotten stuck that way. But it was the only thing that made sense. Selene had done something to us. Changed us somehow. I had a feeling that we were only beginning to discover what she had done. Only time would tell us the extent of the changes she had wrought within us.
