Elders of Hound

1717 Words
The wolves of the pack thought that Christina would be a tyrant leader. They expected the worst from her. This isn’t a baseless and illogical accusation. No. The reason why the wolves think this way is because of the records of the past.   Within their pack and, within any other pack for that matter, the dominance of an alpha is determined by this individual’s raw strength. Meaning, the stronger an alpha is, the more difficult it would be to go against his ideals. This naturally leads to an assertion of power that nobody can ever go against. The stronger an alpha is, the stronger the assertion also becomes.   That is why they are shocked with how things turned out.   “We will hold a meeting.” This is the first order that Christina gave. She didn’t weed out the faithful supporters of Gerard. She didn’t ask to be given the finest of houses within the pack. She didn’t ask for any sort of reward after the fight.   The wolves complied to this of course. It isn’t like they dislike the order. It’s decent and it allows them to have some breathing time after the change of power. However, it’s still shocking nevertheless.   Within an hour, the meeting was finally prepared. The elders of the pack have all gathered here except for Gerard who is still unconscious after the fight. In front is the seat reserved for the alpha and, on it is none other than Christina. There is a strange silence that filled the room. None of the elders talked in the presence of their new alpha. It still feels strange to them that a woman is now their leader. But the reason for their silence is not because of this. They are kept quiet by the sensation they felt an hour ago. Christina’s demonstration of strength and how it almost killed a lot of them.   They are all nervous. They don’t know what to expect. Will she kill one of them? Will she suddenly get angry is they speak up? Will she beat them down in public? All of the worst possible outcomes are running through the head of the elders. But they are all taken out of their train of thought when Christina finally spoke. “Is everyone here?” The question is left hanging for a couple of seconds before one of the elders finally confirmed with a nod. “Right then.” Christina laid back on the chair and crossed her arms below her chest. “The first thing that I want is for all of you to calm down. I’m not an idiot. I know that all of you are scared right now but there’s no reason to be so. You have already pledged your allegiance to me and, that means you are my allies. Do I make myself clear?” “Yes alpha.” The elders said in unison. “Good. Now let’s start with the meeting.” A wide smile curved on Christina’s lips.   This is the moment that the elders waited for. What kind of unfair ruling will their new alpha impose? What kind of injustice will they face? Even with Christina telling them that they are her allies, the elders still couldn’t shake these ideas off their heads. And so they are once again caught by surprise.   “I want to know the current state of wellbeing within this pack.” “P-Pardon alpha?” Tristan, one of the elders, asked. “Right, I guess this would be shocking to you guys.” Christina said. “What does the wolves of this pack do for a living? How do you survive? What is your stable source of food and water? How about weaponry and education? I need to know all of these things.” It’s just one surprise after the other. A female alpha with incomparable strength. A meeting as soon as the battle ended. And now, this same person is asking questions about the wellbeing of the pack. “Well…” Alfred, another one of the elders began. But he couldn’t find the right words to continue this. “Okay let’s make it easier.” Christina said. “Let’s start with livelihood. Do you hunt or do you make your own food?” The elders looked at one another. They then nodded which is quickly followed by an answer coming from Tristan.   “We hunt wild beasts in the forest, alpha. There is a part of the Lycan forest that belongs to our tribe. There’s enough supply of food there.” “What about winter then? Do you also have enough supply for that time of the year?” Christina didn’t even take a second to ask a new question. “It’s scarcer during that time of the year. But we get by just fine since we’ll also be hibernating.” This is common for any wolf pack. During the time of winter where resources are naturally scarce, werewolves have developed the skill of hibernation. This is also powered by magic. Allowing them to enter a state of deep sleep while all the resources of their body is conserved. This is why Christina shocked them yet again as she said: “That’s not good.” “It’s not good?” Tristan repeated the words. With the sound of disbelief evident in his voice.   “Yes. I need the werewolves to be active during winter time.” Christina said. The wolves finally heard something unreasonable coming out of their alpha’s mouth. This is what they’re used to. An alpha who simply follows nobody but themselves. Listening to no advice nor reasoning. They can’t argue against this of course. This is the natural state of things. Whatever the alpha says, goes.   Those who aren’t willing to cooperate will need to defeat the alpha in combat. But all the elders know that this is not possible. Not against their ruler who defeated Gerald in a single second. However, Christina’s order isn’t as illogical as they thought. Their alpha took a bag from the side of her chair and placed it on top of the table. All the elders waited as Christina took the contents inside. Revealing a group of seeds which she then dropped on the table. “These are plants which grows exclusively during wintertime. I got them from a faraway land and, I already tested them out myself.” Christina explained. “There are ten types in total and, combining this with livestock that could be secured before the wild monsters hibernate would give us more than enough.” The elders are deeply amazed. They don’t know if what their alpha says is true but, then again, there isn’t any reason for her to lie to her own pack. Plus, given the fact that they have already witnessed her performing something that has never happened before, they knew that this will be highly likely. Yet there is still a problem and Alfred is the one to call this out.   “May I ask something alpha?” “Sure, don’t be afraid to do so.” Christina said in a welcoming tone.   “What about the water supply? In winter, the rivers are basically frozen. Even the water in the wells would turn the same way so it’s not possible to access the supply there as well.” “That’s a good question. I’m glad that you raised it up.” Christina raised her hand. “Here’s my answer to that.” Christina summoned flames on top of her hand. A floating ball of flame which shocked the elders. It isn’t natural for a werewolf to acquire flame spells. In fact, something like this has never been heard of before. That is why they all looked at Christina with a bit of shock and more of horror. “Don’t be too surprised. Some of you can learn this as well. All you need is a bit of practice is all.” Christina said. “But how did you acquire that alpha?” “Let’s just say that I have a good teacher.” Christina took away the flames. “Anyway, that solves the problem with the water supply. I can just create flames to melt the water, including the ones that you would store. As for the potability, I have a method we can use to ensure that as well.” There’s no end to the surprises that Christina has in store for them. Leaving them speechless and, at the same time, unable to keep up with Christina’s line of thinking. “Aside from this I’ll also be improving your harvesting system. That way we can double the yield and even have more in store for the winter. That way we can make sure that we have enough supply to last until we make our winter harvest.”   They can’t go against their alpha. But there’s no reason to at that moment. While it is true that they won’t be able to hibernate, it’s not like they will be deprived of something essential. None of the werewolves like hibernating because, as soon as it ends, there are health problems that the wolves need to take care of. Nevertheless, everything that Christina said still seemed too good to be true. “Why are you doing this alpha?” Tristan asked the question that is in the head of all other elders at that moment. “That’s a no-brainer. I’m your ruler. Of course I’ll work towards the betterment of this pack.” Christina said. “Anyway, enough of that, we still have a lot of things left on out plate.” The group continued on with their meeting. Throughout the duration of this, the elders couldn’t help but remember the words said by their new alpha after she defeated Gerald. That she would break the old system. And true enough, everything she plans to implement works in this direction. The meeting lasted for three whole hours. There are breaks in between this and, although it was mentally burdensome for the elders, they managed to finish it in one piece. But they aren’t complaining. In fact, all of them left the meeting room with a smile on their face – a single thought running through their heads:   Progress will finally begin.
