We weren’t going to be keeping our relationship with Veronica a secret. If anyone asked, we would answer them with the truth. However, before we could do that, we had to tell our parents first. Veronica had insisted on joining us, but Conrad had been the one to ultimately put his foot down. Our parents didn’t deserve to be blindsided or be uncomfortable.
“Where is your head at, Cal?” my mother asked as she tapped her foot against mine under the table.
“Nowhere,” I lied as I shot Conrad a quick look.
“And how was your little break, dear?” my mother then asked Conrad. “It was so unusual for you to just take off like that…and all by yourself. Why didn’t you take Cal with you?” the opportunity had presented itself and I held my breath as I waited for my brother to answer.
