Conrad Cal and I got comfortable on the double bed as we video-called Ronnie. We were eager to talk to her about how her coffee date had gone with our mother. Eventually, Ronnie answered. “Video call, love,” I said as I stared at the screen. All we could see was darkness. Slowly, the phone moved away from her ear, and we could see her face.
