ALICE
Two days have passed and I am getting used to my daily routine and living in nature. Liam seems to avoid me and secretly I have been avoiding him too. I know he has Helena and that night was just too intense for us both. Helena and I are finally getting along and I do not want to do anything to mess that up. It is the end of my shift, Liam stands at the opening of the tent to meet with Helena.
"Hey…"
"Hey, you waiting for Helena?"
He steps a bit closer to me and I feel the affection that he emits for me. I try to stand my ground but the earth feels like it is moving underneath my feet. I look down, trying to avoid those eyes staring at me.
"Yeah, she asked me to meet her after her shift"
"Oh, yeah, she is almost finished just getting her stuff"
He takes one more step closer and I can see his hand wanting to touch mine but then he pulls it back to his side.
"Listen...about the other night-"
"Yeah..?"
Helena then comes walking up to him and throws her arms around his neck possessively, kissing him as if she has not seen him in a long time. He is taken back a little by her actions but then closes his arms around her. I know that this is not where I am supposed to be and quickly make my exit. I turn around and try not to look too awkward, moving away slowly.
LIAM
I am waiting for Helena after she sort of demanded that I should be there. I am not the kind of guy that has time to wait for his girlfriend around the corner like a schoolboy but I felt that things have been a bit shaky between us and I need to figure out my feelings for her. I enjoy her company and she makes a decent partner. She is not too fussy about things and I like that about her.
But when I play that night at the fire with Alice and me over in his head with the intense emotions I have shared with her, then things between me and Helena look pale in comparison. Of course, then I can also argue that it was a highly emotional night for me and she was just there at the right time. What if Helena was the one being there, at the right time.
But the fact remains...Helena was not there that night when I needed someone...but Alice was there. I am waiting for Helena when Alice walks out of the tent. Truth is, I have been avoiding her for many reasons. I never broke down to anyone before and let my feelings show. I have not cried on anyone's shoulder before. I am the leader of the top Navy Seal team and no one needs to know that I am weak. There is nothing I can do to erase that night but I secretly do not want to erase that night because it felt so good to release some of my pain.
I see her walking out of the tent after her shift and she is busy gathering her hair to make it into a pony. I can not help but talk to her as I am forcefully drawn to her. I want to explain about the night at the fire but then Helena interrupts. Usually, I will not mind her kissing me but now, right this minute, I would rather want to speak to Alice. I embrace her and let her have her way with me.
Maybe all this attraction that I feel is merely a moment. I see her walking away and emptiness fills me again.
"Did you have a good day?"
Helena looks into my eyes.
"Yeah, not too bad, and you?"
"Yes, had a close call with one of my patients"
"Mark?"
"Yeah but he is a fighter, had to send him for his third surgery but Dr, Mitchell is a decent surgeon"
"Wow, speaking highly of your co-workers? I thought I will never see the day that you will admit that someone is good at what they do?"
She slaps me against my shoulder, laughing.
"Urgh! I just meant, she is not as bad as I thought. She helped more than one of my patients that would have died without her expertise. That is all I am saying"
Jack appears and salutes me and I turn to him.
"Sir! Master Chief, sir!"
"What is it, Sergeant?"
"The Admiral is requesting your presence?"
"I will be there, thank you"
They salute each other and the Sergeant turns around and walks away. I then give my attention to Helena.
"I've got to go..."
"I understand, go"
We kiss and I walk to the Admiral's tent. I salute him.
"You requested to see me?"
"Yes, Master Chief. Please come in. We have a small problem on our hands. We are deep into the enemy's territory and our people can not reach us, there is a lot of diplomatic relations that they still need to get through. We are going to have to stay here, longer than anticipated. Liam, I need to know, are we safe?"
"Sir, I am not going to lie. We landed in the middle of an illegal undercover drug operation. We should broaden our perimeter if we are going to stay longer and see if we can not find something more permanent for us to stay in?"
"I think that would be wise, Master Chief. This part of the world is prone to cyclones and we have landed on this island, midseason...we need to move fast"
"Yes, sir! I will get right on it. Will send a report as soon as we get back"
The Admiral dismisses me and we salute each other. I gather my team and discuss the mission with them. We all then gather our gear and start making our way through the camp to the forest.
ALICE
I walk back to my tent and I just take everything in around me. How a few hundred people made a perfectly workable camp and see it as their home. I decide to get some lunch before I going to get sleep. I walk to the kitchen where they serve food. Nita comes walking up to me.
"Hey stranger"
"Hey, you won't say we work together, would you?"
"No, I hardly get to see you anymore. Would you please stop doing surgeries? We need to chat a little too, workaholic?"
She is right I have been focusing on work these last few days. I want to keep my thoughts far from Liam and how I want to be with him. He is Helena's and that is the end of it. The next best thing is to do what I come here to do, help the wounded soldiers.
"Yeah, I guess, I have been a bit busy lately, haven't I?"
"That's the understatement of the year"
We both laugh and then take our trays of food and have a seat at one of the tables. We start to chat and eat, then we hear the buzz of the camp growing silent. I look around and then I see Liam and his team all geared up walking past the tent. Nita turns around and looks at the team passing and then back to me again.
"Guess they have been deployed"
I watch as they walk past us. I look at Liam's face and notice that he is a hundred percent focused on the task at hand. He looks so much more powerful with his gear on and the different guns in all their chambers on his uniform and of course, the gun hanging over his shoulder. He demands authority with every step he takes and it is clear that his team has great respect for him.
"Deployed?"
"Oh, I keep forgetting you do not know the lingo yet. They are going on a mission and by the looks of things, it could be a dangerous one but as I said, Bravo1 is the best..."
