CHAPTER NINE

2017 Words
KAYLA ROCHELLE The trend went on with Keenan sneaking out once in a while for the whole week and when I raised the issue about the vampires being back in town, he was quick to dismiss my allegations, saying I should be careful before uttering words that might compromise the wellness of the pack. “I understand that you are all aware of my wife’s allegation, while she might have a clue of what is going on and maybe saw them, I haven’t seen them or heard any of that but I must assure you that there are no vampires in town and not just that my father got rid of them some years back, so there is nothing to worry about, everything will be okay and I will have someone check on that.” He said and I snorted. He was throwing back at me and I knew how manipulative he could get, I had to apologize to everyone present that my allegations were based on assumptions, I was so embarrassed and since I didn’t trust anyone with the information I had, I had to deal with everything on my own but I knew it was not going to yield anything since one man’s effort was not enough. “Where did you get the assumption that there are vampires in town?” Keenan asked me later when we were chilling in the house after he embarrassed me in front of everyone. “Did you have to embarrass me in front of everyone though? You didn’t even ask me how I found out but just jumped to a conclusion and decided it was time for you to make fun of me in front of everyone, how does that make you feel, huh?” “Stop evading the question I asked Kayla, do you know how hard it is to convince the people that there are no vampires in town? Do you know what it takes, huh? Do you know the tension you pulled?” he asked throwing the bombshell at me, gaslighting was the only thing he was good at. “I am not answerable to you, I am a Luna and I have the right to do what I did, I can’t say something I am not sure about, I did my research and I have reasons to believe the vampires are back in town, the reason is what I don’t know,” I said trying to make him understand that what I was telling him was not based on assumptions but the truth. “I can’t believe you embarrassed me in front of everyone, I mean how dumb can you be?” he posed and I chuckled. “So, between you and I, who got embarrassed? Are you kidding me right now?” I asked shocked at his accusations. “Unless you prove it to me, I won’t take it lightly, and Kayla better have some circumstantial evidence,” he said and walked upstairs in haste, I didn’t understand why he got mad over something that didn’t even have to escalate that way, what was his plan with his vampire friends? I couldn’t even ask him because he would get suspicious. I continued watching, ignoring the fact my lovely husband was upstairs mad at me for saying the truth and embarrassed that I said the truth in front of everyone. When dinner was served, he didn’t turn up to eat so I asked the maid to return his food and that he would warm the food for himself if he was hungry. One mistake I made that night was sleeping so heavily, I didn’t get to hear when he left the house for his usual meetings, that is the same night they finalized their plan, I wish I hadn’t slept that night because it would have changed a lot of things for me and my life. I was at the hall training the young wolves as usual, Malia walked in during the break, the look on her face was not good, I felt like she came bearing some bad news. “What’s up?” I asked as soon as she walked to where I was, “You look gloomy and sad, what is going on?” I asked confused, everyone was looking at us and that got me confused. “Why is everyone looking at me like that?” I asked more confused. “I am sorry Kayla, I know this is not what you wanted to hear from me, but something happened, we need to get you back at the packhouse.” “Why are you not telling what is going on, and what happened.” I asked as I took my towel and wiped off the sweat, “let us meet tomorrow guys, this meeting is adjourned,” I said dismissing the young warriors and following Malia, the packhouse was a few minutes’ walk from where we were standing, so I hurriedly walked beside her. “It is about your parents, I don’t know what happened but Keenan asked me to call you in, your phone was unreachable, he said it was an emergency.” She said but I was not even listening to her, my mind was racing and as we walked through the pack, everyone was giving me a side eye, it was like they already knew what happened and were giving me sympathetic looks. “What happened? Where are my parents?” I asked Keenan as soon as I walked into the house, he instead pulled me into a hug and I got even more confused. “I am sorry baby, it is about your parents, they died in a house fire last night!” he dropped the bombshell on me and I gaped, for a few seconds, I was trying to understand what he had just said to me but I didn’t find the right words to say. To say I was shocked was an understatement, my stomach churned and I felt like my heart had been ripped from my chest, the world came tumbling down on me and soon I lost my vision. Everything in front of me was floating and all I could see was darkness before I fell and lost consciousness. When I regained consciousness, I was in my room, tucked in my bed. Malia was standing by the window and she hurriedly walked towards me when she heard the bed creak. “Thank God you are awake, how are you feeling?” “Exhausted, what happened and how long have I been out?” I questioned and she hesitated before she opened her mouth to talk. “An hour I guess, not so long ago. I am sorry Kayla but they are gone, that is what Keenan was trying to tell you before you passed out.” She said and then it dawned on me, I connected the dots and the only conclusion I could come up with was the fact that he was the one who killed my parents, it couldn’t be a coincidence that he sneaked out every night to meet the vampires and me overhearing them talk about finishing the off, referring to my parents, was not a mere coincidence. “That bastard killed my parents, he is the one who killed my parents,” I blurted out before I burst into tears. “What do you mean? Who killed your parents?” Malia asked confused, she helped wipe my tears. “I am telling you Keenan killed them, I overheard him talk about it with his vampire friends and it can’t be a coincidence that my parents died instead, he killed them!” I said and she shook her head, it was a shame that didn’t believe what I said or maybe she didn’t understand anything, I couldn’t blame her though. “I am going to get you a doctor and maybe after he confirms you are okay, we will go home to see what happened.” She said and walked out. I couldn’t hold back my tears anymore, I felt like I had failed my parents if only I hadn’t slept like a log the night of their deaths, I wouldn’t get a glimpse of what Keenan and his bastard friends were planning, everything happened so fast that I didn’t even get time to analyze whom Keenan was planning to kill. The reality was hard to take in and so was the current situation I was in, “her vitals are okay, I think she is just confused by this whole situation. “Baby, how are you feeling? I am so sorry that I wasn’t there to protect them and neither did I know how to break this sad news to you, I promise I will stand by your side during this difficult time.” And there went my bastard husband, acting like he cared about me or my situation, he just killed my parents and he was pulling the caring card on me. “Thank you, but I need to see my parents right now, I am not crazy like you all think so drop this act,” I said throwing away the covers, I walked to my closet and picked a warm cardigan, put it on, and wrapped a scarf around my neck. “But honey, their bodies were burnt beyond recognition, you won’t find anything except their ashes.” “And that is exactly what I want to see Keenan so stop dictating to me and let me mourn my parents in the only way I know how, step out of my way!” I ordered and he shrugged while dramatically throwing his hands up. I was done watching him act like he cared about me or my parents, I walked up to Malia and she shook her head when she saw me, “you are supposed to be resting right now Kayla,” she warned and I squinted my eyes at her with a ‘are you for real?’ face. “And since when did people start getting their rest the same day their parents are brutally murdered? My friend will you stop acting me like I am a mad woman and drive me home.” I said with finality and walked out through the door, everyone was bowing when they saw me, giving me, their sympathetic looks and it made me cringe. “I can’t believe that Mom and Dad are gone, I hadn’t even visited them as I was planning to do that this coming weekend, now look at what happened.” I lamented as we drove towards my parent’s house, I knew I was going to find nothing but at least their presence would be felt. “I am so sorry Kayla, I know you must feel terrible right now, but there is always a reason for everything.” She said trying to reason with me and I chuckled. “First you don’t know how it feels because they were not your f*****g parents and secondly, if you knew how it felt you wouldn’t have been so eager to call a doctor on me thinking I’m crazy and no, this didn’t happen for a reason Malia! Truth be told, my parents were murdered and I won’t rest until every last one of them pays for what they did to me and my parents!’ I barked at her and she flinched. “Okay sorry, I didn’t mean to offend you, they were my parents too.” She said in defense. “If they were, you wouldn’t be talking that s**t but none of it matters right now because they are dead and we can’t change the fact that they are dead, now will you please drive us home and stop trying to make me feel even much worse?” “I am sorry, it won’t happen again.” She apologized and I nodded. All I wanted was revenge for my parents and some peace of mind. “Good, I am glad we are on the same page,” I said after a short silence.
