Chapter 4 Second Class Substitute

1683 Words
I knew that Scarlet didn't want to hide the truth from me anymore, so she told me everything she knew. It filled in a lot of the blanks missing from the picture, but a small part of me wished I hadn’t asked. Five years ago, when Sebastian was twenty-two, he fell in love with Danielle the first time he saw her at one of the underground motorcycle races. He almost turned the city upside down to find Danielle; he had never been so tongue-tied by a she-wolf before, and he had forgotten to ask for her name and number. At that time, Danielle was only 19 and studying for her Master's in Management at UBC in Vancouver, BC. Once he had discovered who she was, Sebastian pursued Danielle for three whole years, preparing a grand proposal for her, complete with airborne roses from France all over the yacht and a million-dollar fireworks show. Danielle had promised to attend. Everyone thought Sebastian would get the girl, but Danielle turned the tables and rejected him harshly in front of Sebastian's friends at the party. Danielle said she would sooner mate with a dog than with Sebastian! After that, Sebastian seemed to change. He stepped forward, polishing his playboy persona. No female would ever have a permanent place in his life or heart since Danielle. After graduating from university, Danielle returned to the pack, and as Alpha female, she took control of much of the pack's politics, business, and advisory roles. I knew that, like so many Alpha heirs in this province, Danielle liked motorcycles, to the point that she had won numerous trophies in many road races. However, my sister has pushed it back, now viewing it more as a fleeting hobby. Her focus had shifted back into following in our father's footsteps. I guess her purpose in the races was to establish a name for herself and forge the desired connections between other packs and families. The McGregors were one of those families, so what happened? Why did she cut him off so harshly? Even in her adolescent rebellious stage, Danielle was a queen yielding attention and favours. I was always sheltered and found myself jealous, so I had Scarlet teach me to ride. To approach Sebastian, I stole Danielle's motorcycle and narrowly beat Sebastian in a spontaneous street race. Later, when Dani found out, she flew into a rage and severely reprimanded me. She told our parents, and I was yet again reminded that I must be denied the pleasures of careless fun and exploration. They told me to stick to what I know: books, plants, and education. Things that can't hurt me or bring them embarrassment. Being born wolfless was always the excuse when the family ushered me back into my gilded cage. So I conceded. I never touched another motorcycle again, unless it was in gaming. I thinned my lips after Scarlet revealed the secret affair between Danielle and Sebastian all those years ago. "How do you know all this?" "I have an ex from a few years back, he told me all about it once he found out which pack I was from, and I was close to your family. Danielle was the first love and heartbreak for the notoriously shameless Sebastian McGregor." Tonight at the camping base, I heard a little from Sebastian's friends. So I wasn't surprised this time. My sister was beautiful and charming, a cunning Alpha when it came to business, and had an outstanding fashion sense. Our father has presented numerous offers to her from many powerful packs looking to marry and mate with someone like her. She would turn them all away with an arched brow and mocking smirk. No wonder she broke Sebastian's heart, too. Like a true Alpha Female, she toyed with her prey just the same. I fell silent. Scarlet then said, "So you don't have to worry about your family or the pack. With Danielle around, you can remain that pure, innocent version that the world still sees you as. Trust me when I say that you're no match for Sebastian. Stay away from him." "Okay. I understand better now." I kept my thoughts to myself, and Scarlet figured she had persuaded me enough. After that, we discussed other minor matters before ending the call. With my mind even more scattered from what I had just learned, I was lying in bed scrolling through my phone when I saw a post on i********: from the stranger who had just added me that day. 【 It's his birthday. I should have given him a birthday gift, but he gave me a gift instead. So happy~ May we have a pleasant night~】 The picture showed a man putting a ring on a woman. The female's i********: nickname was Elle. I stretched out my hand, looking at the pink diamond ring on my ring finger. It was precisely the same as the ring in Elle's i********:. Sebastian sent the same ring that arrived at my school through a delivery messenger. The 9.99-carat pure blood pink diamond was a new model just launched by the LA brand. The value was too much, so only one of this limited edition was sent per Elite location. It felt cheap now. I took it off and threw it casually on the bedside table. I clicked on Elle's profile. I was almost dumbfounded. Everything she posted as gifts received was the same. The same style of bags, shoes, earrings, bracelets… I cherished all the gifts Sebastian gave me, and I could remember the days I received each one. Everything I was gifted, I had always treasured. I reviewed the timestamps, and they were always on the same days as mine. The Maserati I drove was given to me by Sebastian the day after we had s*x. And on that day, Elle's i********: showed her receiving the same MaDaniti as well—same colour and model. Did she have s*x with him that same day as well? Was it before or after he finished inside of me? The idea of what the truth may be filled me with a burning inferno of emotions. None of them were loving or endearing as I was typically known for. My grip tightened around the phone. My knuckles turned white. Now was the moment of truth. I had to click on Elle's i********: profile picture. After zooming in on the picture, my heart stopped. Elle looked too much like my sister. Now that I see it, even their names were too similar! No wonder he married Elle. The more I thought about it, the more I realized that all of Sebastian's romantic flings have borne a resemblance to my sister. The same body type, hair colour. All of them came from wealthy upbringings. In his twisted mind, since he couldn't have Dani, he would marry the closest resemblance to her. It was like he was playing build-a-b***h, and Dani was the prototype they were moulded after. And then there was me... I looked nothing like the original model he desired, which was why I didn't seem to qualify enough for more than just a casual mistress. For two years, I twisted and moulded myself into what he wanted. But it was all for nothing, and this ache in my chest burned as the desire to slip away unseen, back into the shadow of Danielle, the one the world worshipped and coveted for themselves. How utterly disappointing I have truly become. I tightened my resolve and pushed back the tears. I refused to cry anymore for a man so undeserving of it. I would never allow that man to break my heart again. The peak of daylight broke into my room. I had slept for two to three hours, but I knew I needed to get up and run a few errands before picking up my sister. I contacted a second-hand luxury store and sold off everything Sebastian had ever gifted me, including the Maserati. It pushed back on their original lowball offer. Wolves always try to manipulate the desperation of humans around them. Their mistake was not realizing I was wise to the games, and I ended up walking away with just over two million dollars in my account. It brings me a new feeling of devious joy to know that Sebastian had paid five times that. From the outside, you would think he truly loved me. But it was all a clever lie, gifts to pacify me until the engagement disaster that he had planned. My apartment felt emptier now. Traces of Sebastian and his deceit sold off for scrap for mere pocket change in comparison. I felt lighter at the sight of his lies gone. Suddenly, a pair of arms wrapped around my waist. My back pressed against a familiar warm embrace. The pleasant and elegant scent of cedar instantly filled her nostrils. I hated the pull that I still felt despite it all. "Ivy." Sebastian called my name, nuzzling his face into my neck, "I missed you." I felt the oncoming nausea; I needed to push away. He searched my eyes for something, but all he found was cold emptiness staring back at him. I watched as his attention turned to the apartment. All his gifts that were once proudly displayed have disappeared. He raised his eyebrows, his voice hoarse, "Where are all of your things? The gifts I gave you are gone." I kept my voice calm. "I was restless with Dani coming, it felt cluttered in here, so I decided I wanted to redecorate. I took a few things to a second-hand store. I want a fresh start in here." Sebastian's face tightened momentarily before he flashed me his trademark grin. “If that is what you want, then we can stop somewhere, and I will buy you new things.” Sebastian leaned in, pleased with himself. His strong palms began to knead my perky buttocks, "We've been apart for one night. I missed you. How many days will your sister be staying?"
