Chapter 17

The Circle of Priestess’s Coven Zelda listened to the other priestess squabble over her invitation of the vampires. She watched as they disagreed. Some were in support and others were not. She noticed that only the young priestess, Imani, was quiet. This young witch has always spooked her from the very first time they presented her as a priestess. There was an aura about her that the grand priestess, Zelda, could not understand. “Imani, what do you think?” Zelda asked. The flustered priestess frowned in reaction. She wondered why Zelda will single her out, and she feared maybe her hastily performed rituals were not properly done. Aware that a day will come when she will wrestle the position of the high priestess away from Zelda, Imani had hoped to put it off until it was necessary. “I do not think the opinion of the priestesses matters at this point. The vampires are already on their way to the outland packs and all we have to do is to make sure they succeed in their assignment.” Zelda nodded at her response. A sardonic smile played on her lips, because there really was no stopping her plan now. They should know that she does not need any of their opinion to carry out her plans. “These packs must be destroyed. Their alphas betrayed my grandchildren; therefore, they and their members must be annihilated.” The witches agreed they should annihilate the packs, because none dare to disagree with her. However, one priestess took the risk and said what was on everyone’s mind. She reminded them that the lycan king will hunt them down for what they were about to do. Witches may have magical powers to manipulate, but they are not made for physical combat, or any kind of fighting, for that matter. Zelda pinned the priestess, that spoke up with a single stare. She mentally chanted a spell and invisible forces dragged and pinned the priestess to the wall. The others watched her struggle as she scratched on her throat as if fighting to breathe. Just as Imani made to intervene, the invincible forces left her, and she fell to the floor with a thud. “Does anyone else want to object to this war that the wolves have brought upon themselves? The venom in her voice and what just happened to the outspoken priestess caused everyone to keep their thoughts to themselves. Satisfied that no one dared to oppose her, Zelda dismissed them.              *********   Several days have passed since April tried to reject alpha Duncan. Although she has tried her best to avoid him, he has been doing all he can to stay by her side. At the moment, they were just leaving the ceremonial ground where another pack has been officially joined with the crescent moon pack. Just then, one of the females that belonged to the new pack went into labour. April instinctively took charge of the situation and had the lady gently taken to the clinic. Unfortunately when they arrived, the doctor was not in, so April swung into action. She guided the delivery of a beautiful girl and could not hold back her own sniffles when she saw the parents crying. After cleaning up, she stepped out of the clinic and was surprised to find the alpha leaning on the wall, by the entrance, waiting for her. Still feeling a little teary eyed, she ignored him and continued walking. It was a bittersweet experience for April. The way the new parents were already doting on their bundle of joy made her smile wistfully. Her dreams and hope of meeting her mate and raising a family has been shattered. Not necessarily by alpha Duncan’s rejection, but by his action of marking another female. When she had refused to accept his rejection that first night, her hope was that they could work things out. The fool she was. She felt his gaze on her and chanced a glance at him from the corner of her eye and, of course, he was watching her. The familiar tightening in her chest that she has come to recognise as bitterness surfaced again and she picked up her pace. She would give anything to stop him from following her about.   While she was trying to get away from him, the alpha was busy admiring her. He was still awe struck on how efficiently his mate had handled the whole delivery process. He noticed she has picked up her pace, and it pained him that she was still not warming up to him. Thinking of how to break the ice between them, he asked her if she had done this before, and was even more surprised to learn that she has been training to be a nurse in her pack. He itched to hold her hand but feared that she will spit fire at him. “How else can I convince you to give me another chance?” Alpha Duncan asked. “By staying away from me.” “I can’t do that.” “You are drawing unnecessary attention to us, and your members will soon begin to wonder why you are always with me and not their Luna.” “I am more than happy to announce to them that you are their Luna.” “Don’t you dare.” She retorted; her voice filled with indignation. “If you cannot forgive me, how about Idris?” He pleaded. The mention of his wolf softened April’s heart, as it always does. She has met and has fallen in love with his beast. Idris had forcefully taken charge the day after she tried to reject the alpha and have begged her to reconsider. Her wolf Cierra had confirmed to her that Idris has never rejected them. In fact, he had almost abandoned his human counterpart for his foolishness. But even that did nothing to change April’s mind. She would be no one’s second choice. While they were discussing, alpha Duncan received a distressing mind link that said they were under attack. His immediate reaction was to protect his mate. He took her hand and dashed off towards safety. Thoughts of the events of the night he lost his parents raced through his mind as they ran. “Why are you dragging me in a race?” April asked, trying to free her hand from his iron grip. “We are under attack.” He screamed.
