It took her brain a few seconds to register what the alpha had just said. Her instinct went into overdrive, and she took control.
“Send a mind link to your warriors to sound the warning alarm. Where is your safe holding for the elderly, pregnant and children?”
“We do not have any of those in place. We will alert members via mind link.”
April was too stunned to respond to his statement. How could a pack not have these structures in place?
She left him standing there and ran towards the entrance, shouting instructions as she ran. Authority sipped from her every pore. She allowed her wolf, Cierra, to come forward without shifting. The Lycan guards that acted as her escort fell in beside her and her wolf gave her speed as she zoomed forward.
Alpha Duncan stared at his mate as she shot off towards danger. He could not believe that the female he was just trying to protect was the same person flying into the face of danger. Quickly regaining himself, he dashed off after her.
He saw her plunge right into the fight as he noticed the enemy they were facing. Why would vampires attack his pack? Had they all not fought alongside each other just weeks ago? Why will they now turn against him? He thought, even as he pulled and tore through the fighting crowd to get to April’s side.
The fight raged on and the dozen lycans gave them an advantage.
The vampires were fast, but werewolves were brutally strong. Alpha Duncan, his men and the few lycans with them were doing a good job of pushing the vampires back. However, the leader of the invaders has been given a direct order to target and take down the leaders of the packs they were to attack. This is because a pack will fall easily when its leaders are killed.
The leader of the vampire troupe had been carefully studying the fight and decided the best person to take out was April. She fought with the strength and zeal of a warrior alpha, and there was no doubt in his mind that she was the Luna. He looked at the archer that was with them and nodded his head towards April.
The archer understood the silent command behind the signal. He pulled out a modern sophisticated recurve bow that was strapped to his back and quickly fitted an arrow, and waited for a clear shot.
Meanwhile, as alpha Duncan was fighting to protect his pack, he also had a third eye on his mate. He did not want a repeat of what happened to his father. As if drawn by instinct, his eyes fell on a marksman who had his arrow drawn at April.
“Look out.” He shouted to her through the mind link.
But because they were not completely mated, April could not hear him.
Oblivious to the danger that was heading her way, April kept ramming down on the vampires. She was sure they would have them defeated in no time as she urged her wolf on.
Just as she swivelled around to dodge a blow, she saw alpha Duncan dive in front of her, knocking her off her feet. They both went crashing down. The first thing she noticed was that he was not moving. Fear gripped her entire being as she pulled herself out from underneath his body. Seeing what had happened, the pack members gathered to form a wall of protection around them.
April turned the motionless alpha around and gasped as she saw an arrow protruding from his chest. Judging from the way he was bleeding, it looked as if it may have struck his heart. She could not believe that he would sacrifice himself for her. Different emotions flooded her heart as she cushioned his head on her lap. But her pain overshadowed every other emotion. Unable to contain it anymore, she threw back her head and gave a soul piercing howl. Gently taking her mate’s head off her lap, she carefully placed it on the ground and allowed an enraged Cierra to take over completely.
She charged into the crowd but then the vampires had anticipated that reaction, and they immediately focused on taking her down as well.
Members of the crescent moon pack began to lose their confidence as they watched their alpha lying lifeless. Just as they began to retreat from their opponents, help and reinforcements arrived.
The watchers were there.

The battle turned once again to the favour of the wolves as the watchers fought with the strength of many armies. They fought at the forefront of the battle and left any remnant vampire for the wolves that were positioned behind them. They beat back the vampires until they made a retreat and fled in defeat.
As soon as the enemies started retreating, April screamed for some warriors to have the alpha rushed to the clinic and followed behind in anguish. She was shaken from head to toe and with every glance at her struck down mate, she felt her hopes drop like leaves in autumn. He looked so pale, and blood would not stop flowing from his wound. She wondered why his wolf was not healing him. Her mind was so clouded that she did not notice they were already at the clinic till the doctor asked her to leave.
“I am staying right here. By his side.,” She growled.
The stubbornness that laced her voice left no room for argument.
The doctor quietly went to work. He released strings of curses as he struggled to pull the arrow out, and his eyes grew round when he saw what he pulled out.
“That explains why he would not stop bleeding.” He said, frowning as he tossed the arrow on the table.
“What explains what?” April asked worriedly after waiting for further explanation, but received none.
The doctor explained that the arrowhead was made from pure silver, and to make matters worse, it was coated with wolf’s bane. Being that the arrow had struck very close to his heart, some of the vessels around his heart got damaged and the poison has found its way into his heart.
His explanation caused a fresh wave of panic to fall upon April.
“Will he be alright?
Her voice was so broken as she fought to hold back her tears. She watched the doctor clean and sew him up.
He looked so pale and lifeless, but she knew from their mate bond that he was still alive. She raised a trembling hand and brushed away locks of hair that had fallen on his forehead.
She was still there crying when her brother and the other watchers walked into the clinic to check on the wounded alpha.
“How is he?” asked Prince Calum.
Unable to speak through her tears, April shrugged her shoulders sadly to express her uncertainty.
Alpha Axel looked at his sister and felt sorry for her. He thought she was staying beside alpha Duncan out of guilt, because the watchers had been told by the pack’s beta that their alpha had been struck in a bid to protect April.
“You should go to bed, Bubbles.”
He used the endearing name that he had not used since she became a teenager and refused to answer to it. Everyone in the pack had called her Bubbles back then because she had always been very happy and bubbly and full of sunshine.
“No.” April shook her head.
“His mate may want to be alone with him.”
“I am his mate.” April whispered in a broken voice.
The other watchers, apart from Talia, frowned, because they knew Lily to be his mate.
Seeing their confusion, she explained how they met, and his rejection. Her brother gave the unconscious alpha a thunderous look. Thinking he would have loved to wake him up just to kill him by himself.
“That is why you have been so withdrawn of late.”
The murderous look alpha Axel was giving to the unconscious alpha unsettled his sister.
“I rejected him too.”
This time around, the four watchers were surprised.
“He tried to make amends when I arrived, but I refused. I rejected him as my mate, but he refused to accept it.”
Alpha Axel had a lot to say about what he had just learnt. However, the pain on his sister’s face made him hold back his words. He knew this was not the right time to reprimand anyone. Instead, he enveloped her in a comforting hug.
“Just focus on your mate’s recovery and leave the pack’s safety to us. We will monitor the borders until he recovers.”
