After everyone left the clinic, and it was just April and her unconscious mate, she took his hand and was just praying for him to come back to her. She was gently drawing circles round his palm when Lily walked in.
Lily looked at alpha Duncan lying motionless and shot an accusing glance at her rival.
“It must be a thrill to see him fighting for his life.” She accused.
April pinned her with a questioning glare.
“You think I have not been seeing the way he has been following you around with wagging tail these past days? And how you have been doing your best to keep him off your path?”
“So?”
“That will no longer be a problem now that you’ve had him killed.”
At the mention of her mate and death in the same sentence, April lunged herself at the other female and threw her out of the clinic.
“I allowed you in here despite being his lover, because of the sacrifices that you have once made for him and this pack. However, I will not hesitate to tear your throat out if you as much as mention his name alongside death again.”
Her chest was heaving with so much anger, and she did her best to keep her wolf in check.
Lily, initially taken by surprise, stood up and charged towards April. She would not be intimidated. Her own anger rose to the surface as she faced her foe.
“who do you think you are? You walk in here and try to take over a pack and an alpha that I preserved? I will not allow that to happen.”
She was visibly shaking with so much rage. Rage at having her plans usurped. Rage that the title of the Luna was being snatched from her hands. She did not care if alpha Duncan died. All she cared about was the title she has coveted and worked so hard for. Her eyes blazed as her wolf forced itself forward.
April allowed her own wolf to come forward too, and of course, they were no match. She dragged Lily up the wall by her throat and as soon as they locked eyes, the lesser wolf whimpered in submission. Leaning forward, April softly whispered in her ears.
“The only reason you are getting away with this disrespect is because of alpha Duncan. But be assured, the next time you challenge me, I will peel your skin off your flesh. I do not care if you were f*****g him or not.”
She may have whispered the words, but the burning cold intensity in her voice told Lily that her rival meant every word she just said.
Seeing that her massage has been properly conveyed, April allowed the other female to drop to the floor.
Lily massaged her burning neck, flexing it to make sure nothing was broken, and hastily walked away. Not only did she now wish her lover dead, but his mate as well. Her mind was running in circles on how to carry out her revenge.
April watched her walk away and shook her head to clear it. She never wanted to have any form of confrontation with Lily, but it seems as if the other female has been looking for an opportunity to have one.
Groaning sounds from her mate pulled her out of her thought, and she rushed to his side. The sight of him trashing from side to side caused sadness to wash over her again. She made to go get the doctor when she saw him walk in.
“What’s happening?” She asked in panic.
He rushed to his alpha’s side without responding to her. He administered some medications after examining him, and then turned to April who was standing beside him with worry written all over her face.
“His body is trying to fight off the effect of the poison. The first forty-eight to seventy-two hours will determine his survival. Once he makes it through the next couple of days then he will be out of danger.”
“and if he doesn’t?” She dared to voice her fear.
“Then he will only keep deteriorating until his whole system shots down.
“Never.” She said in a determined voice as she turned back to him.
Whatever was administered seemed to have kicked in because he was now calm and have fallen back into an undisturbed sleep.
She kicked off her shoes, climbed into the bed, careful not to aggravate his injury and fell asleep beside him.
That was the sight that greeted the doctor when he walked in to check up on the alpha during the middle of the night. He had earlier suspected that April was their true Luna, but the sight that greeted him only confirmed it.
Even the alpha’s heartbeat was no longer erratic. Instead, it was beating with a steady thud and at an encouraging rhythm. There was no doubt that his mate was healing and bringing him back to life.
Satisfied with the healing progress, the doctor left the room and shut the door.
Noise from someone inside the room woke April up and she opened her eyes. It was the doctor; he was there with his instruments to clean and change the dressing on the wound. April stood up and went to sit by the window to allow the doctor work in peace, without breathing down his neck.
“He is more stable today Luna, and his chance of survival is looking good.” The doctor announced after cleaning the wound.
“Thank you.” She whispered in gratitude.
He was already at the door when the title he used for her sank in.
“Is it that obvious?” She asked.
“That you are the Luna?”
“Yes.” She nodded.
“If it was not obvious from the way the alpha was following you around, then his giving his life for yours made it very clear to anyone in doubt.”
With that statement, he walked out of the room. April looked outside the window and saw the watchers walking towards the clinic building. She sighed wearily because her plans before coming here have no doubt changed, and it left her with mixed feelings.
When the watchers arrived, they asked if there was any improvement and she nodded, repeating what the doctor told her regarding his healing.
“I know you want to stay by your mate, but you need to be out there taking care of your members, too.” Her brother told her softly.
She shot him a loaded look but did not say anything because he was right. She have not even bothered to find out if there were other casualties, or if they had bothered to clean up after the battle. All she has been concerned with was her mate.
Guilt gnawed at her as she looked at the alpha and knew he should be the one supervising the cleaning up of his pack. No need wallowing in self guilt, I will do the best I can till he wakes up. She thought to herself.
With that decision made, she stood up and went to check on her mate. Satisfied with his steady heartbeat, she adjusted his pillows and excused herself.
The two female watchers looked at each other and nodded.
“we will come with you.” Talia said cheerfully.
“I and Prince Calum will patrol the borders and try to sniff out any threat.” Alpha Axel told the ladies.
The three ladies went to April’s room; the watchers flopped down on her bed while she showered and changed into a fresh set of clothes. She told them her plans to give her mate a second chance and be the best Luna she could to this pack.
“What about his lover?” Mimi asked without thinking.
Her blunder earned her a sharp kick from Talia.
Laughter bubbled up in April’s throat as she watched Mimi try to swallow the pain from that kick. Her reaction gained her a mock glare.
“I am glad you are enjoying yourself.” Mimi chided.
“I’m sorry.” She tried to stop laughing.
But they all dissolved into a fit of giggles, and she felt some of the coiled-up tension in the pit of her stomach ease off. After a few moments, April sobered up and told them all that has been happening between herself and alpha Duncan. She ended with Lily’s visit to the clinic the previous night.
“What nerves to confront a lover’s mate.” Mimi fumed.
“So, what do you plan to do with her?” Asked Talia.
“Nothing. I will allow alpha Duncan deal with his ex. After all, I was never involved in whatever they had.”
