Chapter 7

While April was settling in, alpha Axel and the other watchers were paying a visit to the oracle. They have been meeting with her every day since their arrival. The oracle knew that the burden within each of them was to alert them that all was not yet well. It did not surprise her when she saw them because her visions have been troubling to her, too. She has been consulting with the goddess but was yet to receive a single answer of what the danger might be. “I still have not heard from the goddess, but I saw a vision last night,” the oracle said to them. The hunted look on her face was enough to put them on edge. It was obvious that whatever she saw had been more than disturbing. The lines on her face seemed to have become more defined overnight, and her eyes looked even more sunken and tired, as if she has lost a century’s worth of sleep. “What did you see in your vision?” Mimi asked after moments of silent from the old woman. “Harbingers.” She whispered. The four watchers looked at themselves confused. They did not know what she was talking about. “I saw harbingers of evil hovering on the boundaries of the outer packs of the kingdom.” “What does this mean?” Asked prince Calum. “It means great evil will soon be on our doorstep.” “We have defeated it once and we will defeat it again.” Talia said, feeling confident in herself and the others. The old woman turned from one to the other, as if she could see them. “You do not know what this means. If I had seen a banshee, then I would have been afraid. What I saw was a fantasma.” They all kept quiet because none of them knew what she was talking about. “We can just sniff it out and kill it.” Mimi said again. “You cannot kill these things; they are already dead but yet live.” “In that case, we can have their heads severed from their bodies.” Talia suggested. The oracle shook her head pitifully “They are shadows, and we can use no weapon against them. The reason I am terrified is that they do not leave their realm unless contracted. Once they appear somewhere, it is impossible to have them leave until they achieve their purpose. They come with death as their escort.” The watchers were silent, but each one was silently processing this new information. They wondered who would want to annihilate the outer packs. The oracle gave them no answer because she did not who it was. However she had a clue where they can begin their hunt for this new enemy. She explained that only the most powerful witch can interact with them and contract them. When contracted, they dwell in the shadows, as they can stand no form of light. They will remain in the shadows during the day but wreak havoc at night. Also they will need an insider to create a portal through which they can be summoned. “We will leave for the outer packs first thing tomorrow,” said prince Calum The oracle shook her head in disagreement, stating that they needed their powers now more than ever, and that she really must hear from the goddess before they act. Her statement led to an argument that lasted for several minutes. In the end, it was agreed that they will leave after one week. With or without their powers.            **********   The circle of priestess’s coven Zelda, the grand priestess of the witches, peered into the eyes of the animal that was her familiar. She could see alpha Duncan through the eyes of the sooty owl. The fact that he was wallowing in pain brought a little satisfaction to her dark soul. She patted the animal on its head and walked back to her high imposing chair as she waited for the arrival of her high priestesses. This was the third time they were converging within a month. She only met with them once or twice in a year, but the urgency of the matter on ground has forced them to carry on with these meetings. Hopefully this time around they will be able to cast the spell she needed for her to be able to summon the fantasma. Retribution was on her mind, and vengeance was on the mind of the other witches. She has found it impossible to recover from the death of her twin grandchildren. She cast her mind back to the day they were born. There had been so much excitement in her family and expectations over them were high. Alpha Titus and Lyann had been her babies, she personally saw to their upbringing. Taking her time to tutor and instil into them what was expected of them, and they did her proud. However, just when they were to achieve their ultimate goal, their kind had executed them publicly.   Zelda did not see anything wrong with what her family had planned to do and had done till the point of their defeat. Instead, her interpretation was that the watchers have deprived her grandchildren of their destiny. She caused herself for the millionth time, thinking she should not have been away that long. But then she had it all planned out. Her most trusted high priestess, and great granddaughter Eva, were supposed to aid Titus and Lyann to defeat the full moon pack, while she will be with them when they attacked the lycans during the pink moon. The agony that greeted her when she returned has never left her, rather, it has grown and only revenge can quench it. She gave a cynical smile at the report that one of the watchers had the power to control an element. “We shall see about that,” she thought. While a high-ranking witch can manipulate the elements, it is difficult to maintain your hold on it once you begin to manipulate. Any form of distraction will make it slip away from you and you will need to perform the rituals all over again to manipulate it. This had been the undoing of her people during the battle. Report had it that the distraction from the redhaired watcher had marked their doom. The old witch knew she could take out the watchers all by herself, for she has travelled to the most powerful covens to acquire more powers. She could manipulate the wind enough to defeat Talia, but she wanted to wipe out the packs that have caused her pains. She will strike fear in the hearts of those wolves. Fear that will make them dread witches for centuries to come. She was pulled out of her thought as the high priestesses began to arrive. The last one to arrive was the youngest one of them all. At twenty-one, Imani was already a force to be reckoned with among her kind. She was born with the power to rule her kind, and whenever she had to meet with the other priestesses, she had to perform rituals to supress her powers. Soon after she arrived the rituals began, and she knew that it would fail yet again. The circle was supposed to be purified by the strongest one of them and that person was no longer Zelda.
