Limit Breaks

"What's up?" asked Hakim.

After taking a quick swallow of her crumpet, Vanessa offered a pastelito to Hakim. He happily accepted the offer but noticed on Vanessa's phone that there was only one mission.

She asked what was wrong which lead Hakim to explain that this month was offering the chance to obtain limit breaks.

Vanessa was clueless as to what limit breaks actually were. She was vaguely familiar with them in normal video games. Luckily, Hakim had watched over the battles after he died in December's game.

He brought up a scene that Vanessa posted on their i********: where Logan defeated R'bi with an odd explosive. The explosive didn't belong to Logan. In fact, it was Dani's.

The two happen to have a limit break with one another that allows Dani to give Logan an explosive that he can compress into a target. It was a powerful limit break that many would kill to have.

Likewise, Andres and Logan have synergy for one another. Instead of an ability, Andres can sustain Logan's attacks more so than any opponent's when they are on the same side. He easily referenced the old man in December.

Unfortunately, limit breaks didn't exist the same in all themes. Thus in August Logan had easily electrocuted Andres. The lightning ability was too strong and that theme was low magic-themed.

This led Vanessa to question what was his and Logan's limit break. Hakim was happy to share that they can fire a rocket. What made this more interesting is that this rocket can be used in multiple themes.

Even more than sharing his accomplishments, Hakim was excited to show Vanessa how to obtain limit breaks. He guided Vanessa through her isekai phone and showed her how to sync with people she was close to in the game.

It was fairly easy and took maybe a minute. The requests had been sent to all of Vanessa's friends from The Wild Bunch to the Paragon Sisters. Minus Pattie of course. Even Leira and Mina were requested.

Vanessa watched as within seconds many of her requests were accepted. Of course, it would've been rude if Hakim didn't show her how to actually form a limit break.

After accepting the limit break request from Vanessa, he checked their mission location from his phone. The phone map was luckily easy to read by all players. Their destination was a rocket on the opposite side of town.

Hakim and Vanessa enjoyed their view of the isekai town while riding the mini train. It took them around most of the town. Somehow, they had free passes.

Exiting from the train, the pair maintained a beautiful view of the town as they walked across a bridge towards another building. A magical barrier appeared on each side of the bridge. The two friends took their battle stances to get ready for a random battle encounter.

Eight brown fish appeared from a single side of the bridge. They were the size of a pitbull with mouths wide like a whale. Their fins acted as wings. A single star rested above the school of fish's heads.

Vanessa was prepared for battle whereas Hakim already figured out the gist of this combo. The eight fish charged towards the two.

Just when Vanessa sliced her katana towards one, a bubble of water surrounded each fish. It prevented physical attacks from doing damage. Given that Vanessa was close, the eight fish slammed themselves into her.

She jumped and dodge as many as possible. One managed to grace her shoulder, leaving a memorable fat cut.

Vanessa coated herself in lightning which threw the fish into a mid-range stance. Unfortunately, they were still too close for her to use long-range lightning attacks without electrocuting herself.

A charged ball of fire flew across the bridge. Hakim struck the star from above knowing it was enchanting the fish.

As the star fell, so did the bubbles of water. With their water defenses down, Vanessa freely sliced her katana into each one.

Two brown fish attempted to attack Hakim. He waited for them to get away from Vanessa before blasting them with a lightning strike.

the last fish died to Hakim and the magical barriers were lifted. A victory theme was played signaling for the two to perform a victory pose. Vanessa twirled her word around like an umbrella and held it behind her. Hakim snapped his fingers downward and made a slight turn.

Vanessa loved the corny gimmicks of the studio as did most players. The fact she could be a character of her own in an actual game fulfilled her otaku euphoria. Even Hakim enjoyed the antics of the studio.

He couldn't help but share a brief story about how he met Jeff and Dani. It was an interesting story of how The Wild Bunch was created. It involved him and Logan making a potato g*n out of rubble to kill a monster. The early achievement was short-lived. Shortly after, they realized that the newly formed Wild Bunch wasn't the best in town.

Despite this revelation, Hakim always enjoyed the journey of striving to the top with his friends. The way they went into battle in hopes of defeating a crazy enemy. Just to then scurry from giant attacking rabbits. Or to be mauled to death by frogs.

Exiting from the large bridge, Vanessa couldn't help but notice the gleam in Hakim's eye. Not an expensive effect that Dani would buy by some unknown means. Rather a genuine gleam that he enjoyed playing this sport with his friend. If a third person had stood there with them, they would notice that Vanessa carried that same gleam.

Though her thirst for more stories from Hakim was immeasurable, Vanessa bit her tongue. They were approaching the rocket area and Hakim called for another halt. He wanted to make a few things clear.

Once a pair had achieved their mission, they were to meet up to beat it together. They would be placed in a challenge that oftentimes included battle. The pair must overcome the challenge to earn the respective limit break.

Despite the limit break missions mostly being levels two or three, it wouldn't be wise to take them lightly. He reminded her how improper playing had led him and Andres to die in a level two area. Even Logan died in level three. Cockiness was a major killer among players that have succeeded at a previous point in time.

Vanessa stood staring up at the large rocket, wondering what her and hakim's mission could be. It was a joyful feeling of facing a boss. Surely it would be better than facing that woman again.

Immediately upon stepping into the area, a magic barrier closed off the exits. Growling was heard. Giant paws were seen coming from the other side of a giant telescope.
