Chapter 11 We’d planned to see Tru’s mother again before we left town, but after we’d checked out of the hotel, we decided to wander the nearby shops first. Burlington always had an influx of tourists, and it was great to play one, having come from a place where we were usually the townies. Most of the shops were filled with kitschy merchandise, and it was fun to look. Tru even decided to pick up a travel mug with a stylized picture of the state on the front. He liked the size. As we wandered back toward the car, we passed a frame shop, and Tru stopped dead as he looked in the window. I stepped closer to him, wondering what had made him freeze. “Can we go in?” he asked, his voice quiet. “Sure.” I followed him in, and a hush enveloped us as soon as the door shut.
