Chapter 13

This time, Alastair lifted his gaze to the ceiling. “Who wants to put you in the hospital? I didn’t think about that. But we have to find out the truth. Maybe we should go out in the town and ask about that.” “Oh, yes. Let’s go out and let's stop each wolf in our way, and ask about their healers. Such a good idea, Al.” Lennox said in a mocking tone. “I didn’t mean that. But find a way then, please, instead of moaning all the time.” Alastair told him with a hint of anger in his voice. “I don’t know, Alastair. Why don't you ask your… Marge?” Alastair smiled. “You know they are helping us, but they can’t help us with everything. They can’t change our fate. Even if they know all the answers, I don't think that it would be a good idea just to let them sort out all our problems.” Lennox just looked away. His brother was right. “Do you think we should just note what we got to know here and move on before it isn’t too late?” “Yes, we should do that, I'm afraid.” Alastair admitted. “Do you want to walk around at least?” Lennox nodded. “At least we can see a different pack,” he said, and he stood up and walked to his brother. They went to the door, and they left the room. On their way, they saw a Gamma. They told him they just needed some fresh air, but they would come back soon. The Gamma only nodded. They had a long walk around the castle. While they walked, they noticed a young couple walking towards them. They walked on the same path, so they could not miss each other. The young couple stopped. Lennox and Alastair knew they were from a higher caste, so they bowed. “Are you two the travelers who arrived this morning?” “Yes, my name is Alastair, and this is my brother Lennox. We are Betas.” “Nice to meet you. My name is Maxim Ainsworth. I’m the son of the Alpha, and this is Saoirse Haggan, the daughter of the Alpha from the Red Moon Pack.” “Nice to meet you, Alphas.” Alastair bowed again. “I hope you are having a comfortable place.” “We have. Thank you for your kindness.” “It’s our pleasure. Have a good rest, Betas.” Lennox and Alastair bowed again, and the young couple left them. None of them noticed Saoirse’s surprised look when she recognized their scent. It was the same that Grace got on her, but she found the definitive answer when the sun made the necklace shine back at her on Alastair’s neck. That was the necklace that Grace and Morag wore all the time. She felt the heaviness in her chest instantly. Grace never took that necklace off. She said it was a gift from her mother. Saoirse wanted to ask the wanderer where he got that from. She hoped Grace was okay and nothing bad happened to her. Until she had not had the answer, she could not be at ease. She needed to ask, but she did not want to involve Maxim. They walked back to the castle for lunch time. Saoirse went back into her room, and she had got ready even if she did not feel hungry at all. She forced herself to hide her emotions. Maxim appeared soon, and he led her to the dining room like many times. Usually, they talked little during dinner, but this time, the Alpha and the Luna discussed the wanderers' arrival. Saoirse’s heart pounded faster, quietly listening to the conversation. The Alpha suspected they were lying, and he sent his Beta to detect more about them. Saoirse knew the Silver Moon Pack’s members were clever-minded and strong, but they did not know too much about the world, and the cruelty of a few packs like this one. The Alpha said if they reveal they lied, they would end up in the dungeon, and of course, lying about their origin may lead to them losing their heads. Saoirse tried to stay calm, but inside her head, she desperately tried to make a plan with the help of Joice, to warn the Betas, and make them leave the place quickly. “We have to sneak out after dinner. Everyone is resting then. And if we go straight after, we have a good chance not to meet anyone.” Joice told her human. “Yes Joice, we must try.” “Do like that, Saoirse. If someone sees you or stops you, just tell them you’ve got lost.” “Yes, Joice.” She agreed with her wolf inside her head. She just hoped she could hide her excitement and fear until then. After Maxim led her back, she collapsed on her bed. She did not know how she could wait until then, and she also hoped the Beta would not be too quick to discover anything about them. The rest of the day went like that. Later, Maxim asked her if she wanted to let Joice out, but this time she said she would like to have some rest. Maxim worried about her, and he wanted to request a healer to have a look at Saoirse, but she reassured Maxim he had nothing to worry about. She said she had a little headache. Maxim left her, and he asked her to stay in bed, but when dinner came, she asked a Gamma to lead her to the dining room. She just wanted to reassure them she was fine. She worried that if they wanted to keep her in bed, she could talk to Alastair and Lennox. Maxim felt bad not asking her if she wished to attend to the dining room for dinner. He liked Saoirse a lot, and he did not want to miss any opportunity of being close to her. Saoirse could not wait to finish her dinner. Maxim led her back to her room, and he made her promise she would rest only. Even if she was excited, Maxim’s worry towards her made her feel an unfamiliar happiness. That was the first time she felt there was someone who cared about her. After Maxim left, she awaited a few minutes, then she put a hooded mantle on to cover herself as much as possible. She opened her door, and she was happy to see the corridor was empty. The Beta’s room was not too far from hers. When she arrived, she knocked, but there was no answer. Joice let her human feel with her senses, so she could hear and feel if someone was near. She was about to leave when the door opened. Alastair looked at her in surprise, but she had no time to be polite. She pushed the door open, stepped into the room, and quickly shut the door behind herself. Alastair just stared at her, trying to detect what the young Alpha wanted. It was not just his curiosity; it was also about the fear of someone see the soon to be Alpha's lover in his room, this time in the evening. She took her hoodie off and looked at Alastair, then her gaze moved to the necklace. “May I ask where you got that necklace from?” Alastair frowned. He had no clue why she asked that question. “No disrespect, young Alpha, but you have nothing to do with that, and I don’t want to be in trouble because someone finds you here in my room this time in the evening.” Saoirse moved her gaze down, forgetting about her level, which made Alastair more confused. Especially because a little fear became visible in Saoirse's expression, like she had just got to understand what the Beta said made sense. “I’m sorry Beta, I have no intention of putting you in trouble, and please believe me, neither do I want to be blamed for anything that I would ever do." She sighed. "One reason I came to see you is a question. My heart couldn't be at ease until you didn't answer it. I suspect this necklace belongs to someone who means a lot to me. I just need to know if she is fine.” Alastair frowned more. “What are you talking about?”
