Lennox and Alastair both lifted their hands up, showing him they were not about to attack.
“What have you got to do in here? What do you want?” The Gamma asked them.
“We came here with peace. We have no intention of harming anyone. Me and my brother are travelers from the Black River Pack in England and we are just looking for a place to stay for a night or two.”
Alastair said that in a normal tone.
“This is the Blue Blood Pack. This pack doesn't accept rogues to enter the territory. If you still want to enter, then we have to send you to our Alpha. He might let you stay, but if you lie, you’ll lose your heads.”
“We are not lying, Gamma.”
“Shift back then and follow me.”
They did. When they entered and ran with the Gammas, the size of the land made them surprised. They were sure this was a leader pack. Alastair had a bad feeling, but he tried to hide his emotions and focus on their mission.
They ran for a long time when they finally reached the castle. First the Gamma shifted back, then they both followed him.
“Put your clothes on and follow me.”
They did what the Gamma said. They did not want to show him how amazed they were. This pack was huge, and to see the castle, they were sure it was one of the richest. When they entered, they saw another wolf. They knew he was a beta. The Gamma went there and bowed. They know they are communicating by mind linking. The Beta stepped closer and looked at them curiously.
“My name is Ian. I’m the first Beta. I’ll lead you two to the Alpha.”
“Thank you.” Alastair said, and they followed him.
“Why do I feel it was a bad idea to come here?”
Lennox asked Alastair by mind link.
“Just relax.”
“I just feel like it was really easy to get into, so I’m afraid there isn't an easy way out. Remember what he said. If we are lying, would we lose our heads? I just wonder if the castle is opulent as well. Then do you think their dungeon is luxurious, too?”
“Lennox, stop it. I told you. I’m going to ask for help if that is needed.”
Lennox stayed quiet. He was in fear. Tavish tried to make him trust his brother, but this time, Lennox was not positive at all. Marge loved Alastair, but he suspected she also knew he, Lennox, didn’t like her at all, so why would she help someone who was against her? He thought.
It was a long walk, but finally they arrived at an enormous door.
“The Alpha and Luna are expecting you. Be polite.”
They both nodded, and he opened the door. They stepped in, and the vast room amazed them. Its enormous windows made it bright, and its decoration was breath-taking. The Alpha sat on his chair, and Luna sat next to him.
When they arrived, they both bowed deeply.
“Welcome to the Blue Blood Pack. My name is Alpha Lamont Ainsworth, and this is my Luna, Kirstine. What can I do for you?”
“Alpha, we are travelers from South England. We would like to spend a night or two in your pack, then we’d move on.”
The Alpha looked at them for a little while, like he wanted to read in their minds, but finally he moved his gaze away.
“I can give you a room each. Have a good rest while you are staying here.”
“Thank you for your kindness, Alpha.”
Both Lennox and Alastair bowed, then a Gamma came into the room and bowed deeply.
“The Gamma is going to show the way to your rooms.”
They turned around to follow the Gamma. After they left, the Alpha looked at his Beta.
“Ian.”
“Yes, Alpha.”
“I want you to search for that pack. I want to know if they are telling the truth.”
“Do you think they are lying?”
“I’m not sure. But if they do, then they come for a reason, and you know that too, we aren’t like liars or rogues.”
“Of course, Alpha.”
Ian bowed, then he turned around and left.
The Gamma led Alastair and Lennox to their rooms. The rooms were next to each other.
When Alastair entered, he did not need to hide his amazement any longer. He looked around curiously and touched the luxurious materials when he heard a knock on his door. From the scents, he knew who it was; He mind linked him to come in.
Lennox stepped into the room happily, then he sat on his bed.
“That is comfy.”
Alastair smiled.
“Have you seen that harshness?”
“They aren’t really kind, if you mean that,” Lennox said.
“I think one night will be enough here.”
“Yes, but how do you want to find out about our kind in a day?” Lennox asked his brother. His voice revealed he does not believe in their success.
“Well, if they are here, then they must be nurses, doctors or something about health.”
“I’m listening.”
Alastair smiled at him.
“One of us has to be a volunteer.”
“What do you mean?”
“One of us needs a wound.”
“Are you crazy? Do you expect me to cut myself?” Lennox asked in surprise.
“Yes.” Alastair looked at him seriously.
“You know I don’t like pain.” Lennox shook his head.
“Do you like your pack? Do you like your Alpha?”
Lennox rolled his eyes, then sighed before he pulled his shirt sleeve up. Then he looked at his brother suddenly.
“Alastair, wait a minute! Why me? Don’t you like your pack?”
Alastair smiled.
“I am the older brother.”
“That isn’t a reason.”
Alastair turned his back to him. And he opened his bag. He pulled a small knife out. As soon as he pulled it out, he turned around suddenly, and he cut Lennox's lower arm with a quick movement. Lennox hissed, then he pulled a cloth out and folded it round the wound. He pulled his sleeve back.
“It wasn’t fair,” he commented, but Alastair only grinned.
“We are going to say I shaved you to look nicer to be here, and I accidentally cut you.”
“Couldn’t you find a better reason?”
“No. Now, stand up.”
Lennox did what his brother said, and they went out. They found a Gamma quickly.
“Gamma, we had a minor accident. Can you help us?”
They looked at Lennox’s injured lower arm, and the Gamma nodded.
“Go back into your room, Beta. I’ll ask for a healer to come.”
“Thank you.”
As soon as the Gamma left, Alastair and Lennox looked at each other with a smile. Alastair led his brother back into his room, and they waited. Finally, they heard a knocking, and Alastair opened the door. The Gamma bowed, and he let the healer enter.
“Let me know when she has finished.”
They nodded. Alastair looked at the healer in surprise and sorrow. The fragile, small she wolf looked at the ground, as she did not dare to look at them. She hurriedly went to Lennox with a bag in her hand, and she started the procedure without a word.
“What is your name?”
Lennox asked.
“My name is Una, Beta.”
“Where do you live?”
“In the hospital, Beta.”
Lennox looked at Alastair with a frown.
“Do you often come into the castle?”
“Just if they need us here. Otherwise, we need permission to leave the hospital.”
“Then how do you let your wolf out?”
She did not lift her head to look at Lennox, but her hands stopped. Showing them the question made her surprised.
“We have no wolf, Beta.”
Alastair and Lennox looked at each other again. They did not understand that at all.
“None of you got a wolf?”
She shook her head.
Alastair hesitated to ask her more because he feared she might report their curiosity to the leaders, raising suspicion among the pack members. If all of them were like that, there would have been no chance to help them or join them to go back to their original homes.
“All done, Beta. I’ll leave some gel for you. Apply that twice a day. That will help the wound heal.”
She stood up, packed everything in her bag, and she left the room without looking at them. None of them could talk for a while, but finally Lennox broke the silence.
“Our History says they took them to be slaves. Could it be that they still live like slaves?”
Alastair looked at the ground.
“We have to find out somehow. Somehow, we have to go to that hospital.”
Lennox looked at him in disagreement. He shook his head.
“No, don’t count on me. I let you cut my hand, but I won’t let you make me ill like I should go to the hospital.”
