“Yes.”
“What was that?”
“I don’t know, Alastair, but something makes me feel like we are getting closer to finding our mate.”
That sentence made Alastair feel heavy and happy at the same time.
“Do you think she is somewhere in the world, outside of the Pack?”
“Well, that could be. We are about to see other packs, so I wouldn’t wonder if we would find her in one of them.”
Alastair did not want to ask him further. The thought he might find his mate in another pack made him feel bad. He had responsibilities in the Silver Moon Pack, and he could not just turn his back to Urquhart and Grace for a she-wolf. He thought the Moon Goddess cannot be that cruel as to make him choose between his Alphas and his mate.
He closed his eyes and tried to calm himself down. He tried to push himself to think about something else, even if it was so pleasant to remember that dream. Finally, Lennox moved, and he opened his eyes.
“Are you awake?” He asked in a sleepy tone.
“Yes. And I think you should wake up as well.”
He looked at his brother in surprise.
“Why?”
“I think we should move on.”
“Didn’t you want to rest?”
“We can rest in a pack. I don’t want to stay with humans for too long.”
“What are we going to say? What pack do we come from?”
“We are just going to say that we are rogues.”
“Not every pack accepts rogues.”
Sometimes they talked to rogues around the hill, and they told them many things about other packs. This was where they got their knowledge of the outside from. The rogues were given food and clothes, but no one told them which pack accepted the rogues and which didn't.
“I think, Alastair, it is time to call your witch lover.”
Alastair looked at Lennox suddenly with a frown.
“Lennox, Marge isn’t my lover, and please don’t even say that anymore.”
Lennox only shook his head with a smile, and he left the bed. He dressed up.
When they were both ready, they had breakfast, and they paid the owner. The man only asked them if they enjoyed their stay. They said yes, and they also thanked him for accepting them here.
They took their bags, and they left the inn. They just wanted to get out of the town in human form first, before they shift, and they wanted to continue their journey.
They got far from the inn when they noticed a human crowd around something. They were curious about what had happened, so they went closer, but they could not go to the middle.
“What’s happened?” Alastair stopped a human. He looked at him with fear in his eyes.
“Someone or something murdered a woman.”
Alastair’s eyes widened. The first thing that he was thinking of was his healing power. He knew he should not do that, but he was grateful to this town for letting them stay for a night.
He pushed the people gently out of his way, and finally he could see the corpse. He moved closer to turn her around, and he nearly jumped when he recognized Hilda. Lennox tried to find blood, or a wound, but he could not see any. Alastair felt shocked when he realized her neck was broken. That was weird. Her skin did not show any abuse, anything that would show her death was caused by foreign hands.
“It must be a witch.” He mindlinked to Lennox.
“Do you think a witch is around in the town?”
“Look at her neck. There is no abuse at all. Someone broke her neck without physical contact.”
Lennox checked her neck.
“Yes, you are right. What do you want to do?”
“Well, as it killed, it probably wasn't a white witch, so I think it’s better for us to move on.”
“Do you want to leave them knowing that a witch is around?”
“I know it’s not right, but we can’t fight with a witch, and defending humans wasn’t the reason we left home.”
“True.” Lennox agreed. Alastair stood up, followed by him, then he shook his head at the man next to him.
“I’m really sorry, but I can’t help her. She passed away hours ago. It’s too late.”
The man nodded, and Alastair, after having a last look at her, moved out of the crowd.
“How do you feel, Alastair?” he asked his brother while they walked.
“I had no feelings for her at all.”
“Oh… Okay.” Lennox lowered his head. The tone that his brother used made him understand. He finished the conversation about Hilda.
They walked on quietly. It seemed like they had forgotten about the happenings already. However, Alastair was not at ease at all. He just did not understand why a witch appeared in a human town to kill a woman. He suspected the reason the witch appeared was because the news about the two werewolves in the town spread quickly.
“You know nothing about that woman, Alastair. You don’t know her antecedents. She might have had something to do with that world. Actually, if you think about your conversation, she was really interested in our hierarchical system,” Farlan told him, trying to calm him.
“Yes Farlan, you are right. She might have had contact with one.”
They did not talk anymore. When they left the town, and they were far enough, they shifted to their wolf form and continued their route.
They ran all day, and they spent the night in wolf form. In the morning, they ran for about an hour when they noticed there was a pack. They got closer slowly. While they went closer and closer, they noticed guards were everywhere on the territory’s border.
“Farlan, I think we should just move on.”
“Tavish, this is our mission. We have to get into the packs to see what is inside.”
“I have a bad feeling about that. Just look at how secure it is. I’m sure they aren’t the fun of rogues. ”
Farlan and Alastair stopped for a moment. They thought Tavish was right. It could be a pack that does not accept rogues.
“We will not say we are rogues.”
“Then what do you want to say?”
“We're just going to say we came from a pack.”
Tavish and Lennox started laughing at the same time.
“Probably they know every pack around,” Lennox added.
“Yes, but I’m sure they don’t know all the packs on the continent.”
“And what if your plan won’t work?”
Alastair exhaled. There was a solution which he did not want, as he knew what Lennox thought, but if that would help them escape, then he was going to do that.
“Then I’m going to ask Marge to help us.”
"Oh… Sorry Alastair, I forgot about your… "
He did not finish the sentence as Farlan growled at him. He thought it was better not to joke about that.
“And what pack did we come from?”
“Hm… let's say we came from England. From a small pack, called the Black River Pack. How is that?”
“Sounds okay to me. But what if they are going to ask about that pack, and they find out that pack doesn't exist?”
“We’ll be far away by then. We are only asking them to give us a room for a night. That time is enough to find out about what we wanted to know.”
“Let’s do that then.”
They strolled to the border. They did not need to walk for long. Four of the guards appeared, and they were ready to jump. Seeing that Tavish and Farlan agreed to shift, they shifted back into human form. That made the guards pull back. One of them stepped forward, and he shifted two. He was a Gamma, and he was aware of their sizes. He knew they were at least betas.
