Chapter 10

Alastair laughed. “Yes, that makes me a werewolf.” Hilda laughed too. “Will you tell me about him?” “His name is Farlan, and he is a huge, pure white, really strong and smart wolf.” “Is he here with us?” “Yes.” “What does he think now?” Hilda asked as she expected a positive answer, but the truth was inside Alastair’s mind. Farlan was not happy with the situation at all. They had a mission regarding their pack, and they did not come to the human world to make relationships, especially not one-night stands. “He is resting.” Even though Alastair never lied, he did not want to make her feel bad. Hilda smiled, and as she moved, she saw something shiny in Alastair's neck. She moved her hand to touch it and gently caressed his skin with her fingers on the way. “A souvenir?” “To bring me luck.” “Who gave that to you?” Alastair smiled, and he felt an unfamiliar feeling of loss, while he evoked Grace's smiley face. “I’ve got it from my Alpha’s daughter. She’ll be my Alpha when she grows up.” Hilda let the necklace go. “Is she pretty?” Alastair only smiled and looked away. “I didn’t want to make you feel uncomfortable,” Hilda worried. She was afraid she had asked the wrong question. “It’s not about that, it’s just… She is my future Alpha and she isn’t an adult yet. It’s just disrespectful to talk about this, you know?” Alastair saw Hilda did not quite understand that. He did not want to explain that further, but Hilda wanted to know more. “What does an alpha mean to you?” “The Alpha is the leader of the pack. Alpha wolves are the strongest.” “So, an alpha is like a king?” “Not exactly, but something similar, I guess.” “And what about you, Alastair? How come you are that close to the Alpha’s daughter?” Alastair smiled again. He did not want to show Hilda, but he wanted to finish this conversation. “I’m a Beta. A Beta is the closest wolf next to its Alpha. My father works with the current Alpha of mine, and when his daughter grows up and takes the Alpha’s position, I’ll be the Beta next to her.” “And your brother?” “He is a Beta, just like me, so he’ll have the same responsibilities.” He saw Hilda would ask questions all night, and he did not want that. He only hoped that Lennox had finished and he could go back and lie down. “We should go back now. It’s getting cold.” He said, hoping that Hilda would not mind. And this time, he was fortunate. She stood up, folded her arms around his, and they walked back into the Inn. When he wanted to say goodnight to the woman, she tried to kiss him on his lips. Alastair pushed her away gently. “I’m sorry, but I can’t do that.” “Your Alpha won’t know that. You can have fun tonight.” She smiled, hoping to convince him. "Hilda, you are really nice, and it has nothing to do with my Alpha. It's just… I’m different from my brother." Hilda lowered her head and nodded. “Well, it was a pleasure to meet you then, Beta.” She said with a hint of anger in her voice, then she turned around and left him. Normally he would apologize, but this time he just laughed at himself? Why should he apologize? Because he did not want to mistreat a human woman? “What a weird society.” He whispered to himself while he shook his head and walked up the stairs. When he reached the door, he knocked, and soon the door opened. Lennox opened it, folding a light guilt around his lower abdomen. He opened the door wider. Alastair did not want to see what he should not see, but fortunately, the woman had her dress on, and she just did her messy hair. She smiled at Alastair and turned to Lennox. “You were fantastic.” She kissed Lennox’s face, then she left with a smile. Lennox collapsed in the bed, while Alastair walked to the window to open it. He thought his brother wanted to have fun and try new things, so he didn't want to argue with him about the scent of mating. “Alastair, if I knew this.” “Lennox, I don’t want to know.” “Are you angry with me?” “No, I’m only going to be angry with you if you made her pregnant.” “Why do you think I did?” “You know human women can be pregnant anytime.” “Don’t worry, brother, they are also very smart about that. They have ways to avoid having an unwanted successor.” Lennox said with a laugh, but seeing his brother remained serious, he stopped laughing. “And what about you?” Lennox asked. “About what?” “About that blondie?” Alastair smiled and looked at the ground, then back at his brother. “I keep myself for my mate.” Lennox looked at him in surprise. “And what if you never find that she-wolf? Will you die as a virgin, then?” “If that is the wish of the Moon Goddess, then yes.” “You are crazy.” Lennox said, then finished the conversation with that. He felt tired, so he laid on the bed comfortably and closed his eyes. Alastair did not want to open up, never to his brother. He was interested in how it feels to mate with someone, but he wanted to experience this feeling with his mate. Farlan always assured him that the Moon Goddess had chosen someone for him, and he couldn't help but feel guilty about finding happiness with someone else beforehand. He did not blame or condemn his brother because he was thinking differently. That was his life. He felt like he had no right to tell him not to do something that made him happy. He walked to the bed and laid on the other side. He closed his eyes and fell asleep quickly. That night, he had a dream. His dream was pleasant. He was at home, outside. He felt fine. The weather was perfect and sunny and a light breeze caressed his skin. A lovely, intoxicating scent was in the air, it was sweet, mixed with flowers. As he smelled that, he felt like the happiest creature in the world. Soon he felt he was not alone. As the intoxicating scent became more smellable, he sensed it was a she-wolf. As she moved closer, he heard her laughing. That laugh was the most beautiful sound that he had ever heard in his life. He turned around, hoping to see her. She was in a white dress, but when he moved his gaze to see her face, the bright light of the sun made him blind. When she was close enough, he held her hand to pull her into his embrace, to relieve her identity, but then the dream finished. He opened his eyes to find himself in the small room of the inn, in one bed with Lennox, far away from the three hills. He felt so sad to come back to reality. That dream was just so nice. He wanted to feel that again. “Have you seen that, Farlan?”
