Chapter 47 - A Stroll Down London Bridge

607 Words
*From Emily's POV* We were dropped off on the Westminster Bridge in London when it was still dark. Just as fast as the MS-approved automobile whisked us into the city, it drove away into the darkness, becoming just another car navigating the city's maze of roadways. The lights of London's historic buildings shimmered in the Thames's water. For a brief time, I felt as if I was peering into a world I wasn't a part of. The reflection in the river's waters was a world devoid of Jayden and Professor Lewis, as well as horrible killings. It was a different universe, one that I wanted I could visit. "Now what?" Lily asked, in the similar disinterested tone a child would use when whining "Are we there yet?" She was bouncing on the balls of her feet. This kid was getting to my nerves and I did not like it. "In all of the books, there are car chases and fights." A man on a pre-dawn bike ride wheeled past us at a snail-like pace. We remained silent until he was across the bridge. "There are ups and downs to every job," Eddie, our driver, said flatly just as the cell phone in his pocket began to chirp one of Beethoven's symphonies He snatched it out of his pocket so rapidly that it nearly slipped out of his hands and into the water. After a few fumbles, he brought the phone to his ear, nodded once, even though the person on the other end of the line couldn't see him, and handed his phone to me before I heard his voice. My moment to feel frightened had arrived, and I was concerned that the phone might slide from my sweaty grip. "Miss Emily?" he looked at me from the rearview mirror. "Yes, Eddie?" It wasn't a question or an exclamation. Just a word, a word that meant a whole lot to me at the moment. Eddie was an anxious man, and I was always hesitant to visit London as he was always the driver and he made me nervous. We began to stroll down the length of the bridge. "C'mon Lily." I held out my hand to the 5 or 6-ish something kid that my father had forced guardianship upon me. "But-" Lily was watching me, eagerly. "This is getting better. A mysterious phone call." Eddie had her by the hand and was gently pulling her away. "Who is it?" she asked me over her shoulder. "Who's Limily?" "It's a really long story." I heard Eddie say. "Is it, Eddie? Is it, though?" "Too long of a story," He added, smiling at me. I turned away from them and walked aimlessly towards the other end of the bridge, my feet feeling separated from the rest of my body. I so wanted to say something to him, but suddenly my words became lodged in my throat, stuck somewhere between my vocal cords and my usually big mouth. "What's up?" Finally, I murmured something before cringing and hoping I could just chuck the phone into the ocean. What's going on? He'd just saved my life for the second time, and all I could think to say was, "What's up?" There was a lot going on. A gang of serial killers was on the run somewhere, either in London or elsewhere in the United Kingdom. I was in the heart of the city with two secret agents and a renowned politician's daughter. more than anyone else, knew what was going on, and it wasn't good. "Let's just enjoy the sunset, Miss Limily." Eddie jokes as Lily looks up at us, admiringly.
