Chapter 2

Aubrey’s Pov: My mind wandered off while the professor was having class. The events from yesterday made me realized that I should have confronted the guy. His attitude was so arrogant, it made me furious. Because of him, I had to stay up late reviewing for the exams. Suddenly, a sound made me almost jump from my seat. The professor was loudly hitting the table with a stick. Everyone went silent and looked at him. "Okay class! I have an announcement to make before we continue the class,” the professor began his litany. “Next month, at the celebration of the department week, the committee assigned to organize the whole event announced that there will be a dance ball”. The department week. I didn’t realize it was already next month. Anyway, I won’t be attending that ball. "Everyone is required to join; I will be checking your attendance," the professor continued, emphasizing the attendance check. A student suddenly raised her hand. “What will be the consequence if we don’t attend?” “Oh! Thanks for asking. Whoever decides not to attend will just be getting additional two months of duty,” the professor answered with a big smile. The class reacted. I could hear their loud disagreement with the professor’s announcement. The professor raised her hands in surrender and spoke loudly. “All right, all right. Settle down, everyone. Any complaints about that will be handled by the organizing committee. So talk to them. More details about the department week will be posted on the bulletin outside the faculty room.” “Miss, Aubrey can’t go to the ball because nobody wants to pair with her!” another student shouted, which made the entire class laugh. Oh, great. Just great. I know that. You didn’t have to rub it in. Ugh! “Stop that. Let’s continue the class. Now, turn your books to chapter 10, page two-hundred-twelve,” the professor ordered. The last class of the day went on for another two hours. After that, I stopped by the drive-thru of my favorite coffee shop to grab a small bite. I drove home listening to the songs playing on the car’s stereo. When I arrived home, I immediately flopped myself onto the couch. I turned my head to the right to look at the time from the Mickey Mouse clock hanging on the wall. It’s almost seven in the evening. I have to review another chapter tonight. I heard my stomach grumbled then decided to get up and check the kitchen. I was deciding on what to eat as the doorbell rang. I rushed to the door and saw that nobody was there, except for an envelope that was left on the floor. I picked up the gray envelope which was tied with white ribbon. I turned it over to check the back but there were no details about the sender. I closed the door and went back inside and pulled the ribbon to open it. I pulled out a piece of paper inside and read the contents. It was an invitation to a birthday party dated today from Kristen Chang, the girl from the class who told everyone that I can’t go to the ball. I’m positive that this girl hates me but why would she invite me? Besides, how did she get my address? I frown at the thought. I decided not to go to her party. I went back to the kitchen and threw the invitation to the trash bin. A few minutes after eating, I proceeded to my room to take a shower. I needed to freshen up so I could stay awake while reviewing another chapter. Just as I got out of the shower, I heard my phone beep. It was a text message from Kristen asking me to go to her party and promising that she’ll be good to me from now on. I chuckled. I assume she got my number from James since he’s the only one who knows it and also, she is James’ girlfriend. James is my best friend. We’ve known each other since we were twelve years old. His family used to live next door to us when I was still living in America. He would come up to our house and play with me or study. He’s the only friend I have and he’s like an older brother to me. He’s overprotective and a worrywart, at that. I received another text message from Kristen. Come to my party, okay? It's my birthday today! I looked at the text when another message popped up. James is here. Thinking carefully, I guess it wouldn't hurt attending this party once in a while. Besides, she said James is present. I walked towards my closet and looked at the clothes hanged inside. All right. I decided that I’ll go. I checked and chose from the outfits I have and settled on wearing a simple, short-sleeved, black party dress paired with the same color of heels. I dabbed a small amount of powder on my face and applied lipstick. Facing the mirror for the last time, I checked myself to see if I look okay. I really don’t have much knowledge about women’s make up. “I guess this is fine,” I told myself. I grabbed my car keys from my bedside table and put my phone inside a black sling bag and went out. I drove to the address Kristen texted. Arriving at the venue, it was a club. I stayed inside the car for a few more minutes, looking outside and having second thoughts. Taking a deep breath, I opened the car’s door and got out. Okay, I’m going inside that club. I pressed the lock function of my car keys and started walking towards the direction of the club before I regret it. As I got closer, I could hear the loud music from the club and saw some of my other classmates outside chattering in groups. A few of them saw and waved at me, while some others just gave me following glances. I was alerted to the sound from behind me. And as I turned around, I saw a drunk girl bumped into my car's hood. She straightened her back and slammed the car’s hood. I was about to call her out but she was so out of it. Another girl who seems to be sober approached her and helped her out. “Forget it. I’m going home!” I said with irritated tone. I went back to my car, opened the driver’s side door and got inside. I was about to start the engine when somebody opened the door to the front passenger seat. I almost had a heart attack! "Why are you here?" he said in a baritone manner. It was James, he must've recognized my car from afar. "What do you mean? Kristen invited me," I said. "Go home right now!" he yelled. "Why are you yelling at me? Did I do something wrong? And why should I go home?" I asked stubbornly. He realized what he just did and finally calmed down before looking at me. "Just... Just go home please." "Why did you give Kristen my number?" I asked him. "What? No! I didn’t give your number to her. Wait, she texted you?" he asked. I only gave him a nod. "Go home, okay?" he said and got out of my car. I followed him out, but he was nowhere to be seen. Where did he go? “I can't believe I'm doing this.” I let out a loud sigh and walked back towards the entrance of the club. It was really crowded and dim inside but the flashy, colorful lights guided me towards the bar counter located on the other side. But before I even reached the center, someone grabbed my arm and pulled me to the side. A drunk guy pinned me to the wall and tried to kiss me. I keep pushing him away, but he was too strong; his grip on my hand is too tight, it's hurting me. I almost cried out in pain. "Please… Let me go! Let go of my hand!" I pleaded but it seemed like he didn't hear me. I looked down and closed my eyes as I prayed that this will be over and that he would stop. James was right; I should've never come here. “She told you to let go.” Someone behind the drunk guy said. I looked up again and saw the person placed his hand over the drunk guy’s shoulder. The drunk guy didn't stop. I was shocked when he pulled the guy trying to kiss me. "What is wrong with you, dude? Go find another girl to play with!" The drunk guy hissed. "Stop it. It's obvious she doesn't like what you're doing," the other guy said in an authoritative tone. The drunk guy laughed and turned his head to look at him, still gripping my hands. "Who cares? I'm having fun!" "Now, you're not," the other guy replied as he made an eye to eye contact with the drunk guy. The drunk guy suddenly let go of my hand. "Now, I am not having fun!" he exclaimed then left. I burst into tears, and used my hands to wipe them off my eyes as I trembled in fear and slowly dropped myself on the floor. My vision became blurry and I can only hear the loud music and shouts from the people inside the club. The guy sat down on the floor beside me. "You can stop crying now. He’s gone," he said calmly. The guy stood up and left. I didn’t get the chance thank him. I stood up and hurriedly went outside of the club, still crying and not bothering looking for James or Kristen anymore. I want to go home. I don’t want to be here anymore. I drove myself home but changed my mind. I decided to stop by a small bar near the condo building. I suddenly have the urge to go drinking by myself. I need to forget what happened tonight.
